The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if mindfulness meditation can improve outcomes in older adults with and without cognitive impairment. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. How does mindfulness impact thinking and memory? 2. How does mindfulness influence brain function and structure? 3. How does mindfulness affect daily function and quality of life? Researchers will compare all outcomes to one other groups. In one group, individuals will participate in a mindfulness class intervention; in the other group, individuals will not engage in any active interventions immediately, but will be placed on a waitlist for the mindfulness intervention. Researchers will compare all outcomes between the groups groups to determine whether the mindfulness interventions leads to greater improvement compared to no intervention (waitlist group). Participants will: * Be randomly assigned to participate in the mindfulness intervention, or no immediate intervention (waitlist) * Complete paper-and-pencil cognitive testing, surveys, computerized tasks, and neuroimaging measures (EEG and MRI) before and after the intervention Outcomes will be assess at baseline, 2 months, 4 months and 6 months.
This study investigates the relationship between the noradrenergic (NA) system, sleep quality, and cognitive function in older adults with insomnia - a population at elevated risk for Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD) - compared to age and sex matched controls with normal sleep. The study characterizes NA function through multiple approaches: measuring 24-hour plasma levels of norepinephrine (NE) and its brain metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG); evaluating central NA system response using the clonidine suppression test (a presynaptic α2 adrenoreceptor agonist that reduces locus coeruleus NA activity; and employing pupillometry as a non-invasive marker of autonomic function. To explore NA function's mechanistic role in insomnia, the study uses an intervention with bright light exposure to enhance daytime NA activity, with the goal of improving both sleep quality and cognitive performance.
The goal of this proposed research is to collect pilot data to test the hypothesis that treatment with a novel form of closed-loop digital meditation (MediTrain) will lead to a greater magnitude of gains in cognitive abilities in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), compared to OA without cognitive impairment, and will lead to improvements in quantitative measures of sleep.
To investigate the effect of trazodone on sleep, hippocampal-dependent memory and hippocampal excitability. The investigators hypothesize that trazodone will improve total sleep time and proportion of time in Slow Wave Sleep (SWS).
This project seeks to determine how post-stroke cognitive impairment moderates motor learning during walking in older adults with chronic stroke and identify brain structural markers that mediate this relationship. The chosen experimental design integrates biomechanical analyses, neuropsychological assessments, and brain imaging techniques to determine the impact of post-stroke cognitive impairment severity on two forms of motor learning (explicit and implicit) and examine the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the relationship between cognition and explicit motor learning. Ultimately, this work may lead to the development of a more comprehensive, effective treatment approach to improve walking dysfunction in older adults post-stroke.
The investigators aim to use the new PET radioligand, 18F-MK-6240, to detect tau pathology in cognitive healthy and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) elders. The investigators will then examine the interactions between differential tau burden and performance on cognitive tasks, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) neural activation patterns, and other cognitive and behavioral measures. By investigating these relationships, the investigators hope to understand the cognitive and behavioral outcomes of tau deposition found in specific brain regions in cognitively normal/mildly cognitively impaired adults. Furthermore, the study aims to examine how the presence of tau may contribute to the risk of subsequent cognitive decline, neurodegeneration, and dementia.
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn the affect of melatonin on sleep, cognitive function, and quality of life (QoL) in patients with cirrhosis and a complication called hepatic encephalopathy (HE). The main questions this study aims to answer are: * Does taking melatonin increase REM sleep, an important part of healthy sleep that is reduced in cirrhosis? * Does taking melatonin improve cognitive function and reported QoL? This is a pilot study, where participants will: * take one month of melatonin, followed by one month of thiamine, which is another supplement but is not suspected to impact sleep significantly. * Undergo cognitive testing and take surveys * Wear a commercial wearable sleep tracker * Have a formal sleep study and salivary melatonin collection at the end of taking each supplement at our sleep center Participants will be blinded, and neither they nor the researchers will know which supplement they are taking first and which they are taking second. They will also be randomized, with half starting with melatonin and the other half starting with thiamine.
The purpose of this study is to better understand sleep and circadian functioning in children with ADHD using home-based measures, parent report, and a lab based melatonin assessment. Investigators will also examine how sleep relates to psychiatric health and cognition among children with ADHD. The investigator for this study is Dr. Jessica Lunsford-Avery from the Department of Psychiatry.
The investigators are interested in finding out how Prolonged Nightly Fasting (PNF) and/or health education may impact health and cancer recovery for breast cancer patients and survivors.
The proposed project addresses the goal of exploring preschooler's ability to recognize changes in feelings of hunger/satiety based on consuming a snack and a meal (lunch/dinner) that are either based on the usual childcare center fare (control) or are based on lean meats (intervention), which will have a lower glycemic index.
