Why Is This Research Study Being Conducted? * The study wants to find out why people with a type of blood cancer called myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are more likely to have heart problems like heart disease and stroke. * Researchers also want to see if certain proteins related to inflammation in the body can help predict these heart issues in MDS patients. * By understanding this better, researchers hope to find new ways to detect and manage heart disease risks in people with MDS
Single center observational and specimen banking study for children with eosinophilic esophagitis EoE to gauge natural history and inflammatory markers
The objective is to investigate the effect of walnuts on gut microbiota, inflammatory markers, atopic dermatitis status, and indices of allergy outcomes in breastfed infants during early complementary feeding. The three primary aims include: Aim 1: Evaluate the effect of walnut consumption on gut microbiota structure and function, inflammation, atopic dermatitis, and allergy outcomes. Aim 2: Evaluate the impact of walnut consumption on infant growth trajectories and risk of overweight. Aim 3 (exploratory): Identify walnut-specific food signatures that are associated with gut microbiota and immunity biomarkers using a novel nutri-metabolomics technique.
A pilot randomized control trial (RCT) to examine the efficacy of a culturally tailored mindfulness intervention upon fasting cardiometabolic factors (including markers of glycemic control) and inflammatory gene expression in n=60 (n=30 intervention, n=30 wait-list control) low-income Spanish-speaking Latina pregnant women. The study will be conducted in partnership with MOMS, a nonprofit community organization that serves low-income pregnant and postpartum women.
Animal and observational research in humans suggest that specific types of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) may impair glycemic control. However, whether NNS consumption impacts glucose homeostasis in middle-aged/older adults with prediabetes is unknown, and potential mechanisms by which this could occur have yet to be identified. The overall objective of this R21 proposal is to establish proof-of-concept for alterations in glucose homeostasis following intake of saccharin, but not acesulfame potassium, in middle-aged/older adults with prediabetes compared to a eucaloric diet with no NNS.

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effects of consuming meat and eggs from regenerative/pastured versus conventional farming practices on health biomarkers in middle-aged adults. The main questions it aims to answer are: How does consumption of pastured animal products influence red blood cell omega-3 fatty acid levels, inflammatory markers, and metabolomic profiles compared to conventional animal products? What are the potential metabolic health benefits or risks associated with consuming animal products from regenerative farming practices? Researchers will compare participants consuming pastured meat and eggs to those consuming conventional meat and eggs to determine differences in health outcomes. Participants will: Consume study-provided chicken thighs, ground beef, ground pork, and eggs for 16 weeks. Attend clinic visits for blood, urine, and stool sample collection before and after the intervention. Complete dietary assessments to monitor compliance.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe affective disorder impacting millions of women worldwide, thought to be due to altered sensitivity to hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. Neuroactive steroid hormones (NAS) and the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A receptor (GABAAR) are thought to play a role in PMDD. This research will assess the blood levels of GABAergic NAS, expression of associated enzymes, and expression of GABAAR subunits across the premenstrual (luteal) phase of the menstrual cycle in healthy controls and individuals with PMDD. Within the PMDD group, the investigators will assess how these measures are affected by a low-dose antidepressant medication versus placebo. The results will provide a comprehensive view of the changes in these systems across the menstrual cycle and will add to the investigator's understanding of the mechanisms that underlie PMDD, as well as therapeutic mechanisms of PMDD treatment.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a devastating illness that has a growing impact on Veterans. One of the most disabling symptoms is depression, which is common in PD and linked to poor quality of life and higher risk of suicide. Unfortunately, there is a lack of effective treatments for depression in PD. Ketamine, which has rapid and potent antidepressant effects, is a potential option but has not been tested in Veterans with PD. Studies in rodents show that ketamine may not only improve depression in PD, it may target two of the underlying drivers of the disease: (1) reduced neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to adapt and remodel itself; and (2) elevated inflammation. The investigators are conducting a randomized, placebo-controlled study to examine if a dose of intravenous (IV) ketamine improves depression in Veterans with PD. The investigators will also examine ketamine's effects on neuroplasticity and inflammation, which will help us understand how ketamine works in PD and if it can be a useful treatment for Veterans with the disease. This study will lay groundwork for a larger clinical trial across multiple VA sites.
The goal of this study is to determine the number of servings of broccoli sprouts sufficient to (1) increase sulforaphane levels in the stool and blood and (2) reduce inflammatory markers in patients with mild ulcerative colitis. This is a pilot feasibility study to prepare for a larger randomized controlled trial.
