Battlefield Acupuncture and Its Use In Multimodal Perioperative Anesthesia Care
Description

The study hypothesis is that perioperative Auricular (battlefield) acupuncture for general surgery and urology cases undergoing general anesthesia will decrease opioid requirements, postoperative pain, the incidence of PONV, and the incidence of perioperative anxiety in comparison to simulated (placebo) perioperative battlefield acupuncture.

COMPLETED
Battlefield Acupuncture Following Shoulder Surgery
Description

The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to determine the effectiveness of Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) in addition to standard post-surgical shoulder physical therapy compared to a standard shoulder rehabilitation program in reducing medication use and pain in patients who have undergone shoulder surgery. Measurements of medication (opioid, NSAID, acetaminophen, etc.) use (daily number of pills consumed), pain rating, patient specific functional scale and global rating of change will be taken at 48-hours (baseline), 72-hours, 1-week, and 4-weeks post-surgery. It is hypothesized that the inclusion of Battlefield Acupuncture will result in a decrease in post-surgical pain levels, reduced opioid medication use, and improved patient mood when compared to rehabilitation alone.

COMPLETED
Battlefield Acupuncture for the Treatment of Low Back Pain in the Emergency Department
Description

The purpose of this study is to study acupuncture for the treatment of low back pain in the emergency department. Current treatments for low back pain in the emergency department generally include pills or injections of medications to treat pain and relax muscles. However, it is known that many of these medications have risks and toxicities which may limit their safe use in some patients. Therefore, new types of treatments are needed. Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing that has been practiced in some form for centuries. In modern times, acupuncture has been studied for the long-term treatment of low back pain and some research suggests it may be effective. However, very little research has examined the use of acupuncture for immediate pain relief in the emergency department. This research will study a type of acupuncture called Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA). Battlefield acupuncture was designed by a physician in the US military with the purpose of providing immediate pain relief. It involves the placement of 5 small needles in each ear. The needles may be removed at any time. The hypothesis of this study is that battlefield acupuncture may improve mobility and pain of patients with low back pain in the emergency department.

Ear Acupuncture for Pain and Anxiety Management in Early Labor
Description

This is a study evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of ear acupuncture for the management of pain and anxiety in early labor.

WITHDRAWN
Ear Acupuncture for Neuropathic Pain
Description

The purpose of this study is to gather information on the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture (i.e., the placement of acupuncture needles in specific points on the ear) in reducing pain and improving quality of life among patients experiencing neuropathic pain in the acute inpatient rehabilitation setting.

COMPLETED
Veteran Ear Acupuncture Pilot Project
Description

Veterans who have responded well to Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA), a form of auricular acupuncture, in routine clinical practice will be invited to receive education to insert the needles themselves at home. A 3D-printed wearable prosthetic will also be explored as a means to facilitate needle placement. Primary end-points will include whether adverse events occur over a six-month period and whether the aforementioned prosthesis significantly facilitates needle placement in terms of subjective ease of administration.

COMPLETED
Ear Acupuncture During Chemotherapy Infusion for Breast Cancer, a Feasibility Study
Description

This research study is evaluating ear acupuncture as a possible treatment to reduce symptoms related to receiving chemotherapy.

Conditions
COMPLETED
Ear Acupuncture for Pain Associated With Ambulatory Arthroscopic Knee Surgery
Description

The investigators propose to complete a randomized controlled trial to compare ear acupuncture at Cingulate gyrus, thalamus, omega 2, shen-men, and point zero on the right and left ear plus standard of care versus standard of care alone for symptomatic treatment of pain following ambulatory arthroscopic knee surgery. After the subject has been discharged, phone calls, emails or text messages will be made at 24 and 48 hours, 1 week and 1 month. These contacts will be used to assess the subject's pain level, ambulation status, doses of analgesics taken and time to return to full duty. At 1 week and 1 month, subjects will be asked the PIQ-6 Pain Impact Questionnaire.

Conditions
COMPLETED
Ear Acupuncture for Acute Sore Throat.
Description

The purpose of this study is to compare ear acupuncture plus standard of care versus standard therapy (anti-inflammatory medications) in the reduction of pain, reduction in oral anti inflammatory medication use, hours lost from work in acute sore throat.

TERMINATED
Ear Acupuncture for Acute Sore Throat in Patients Unable to Take Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Agents (NSAIDs)
Description

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of ear acupuncture alone in subjects with a contraindication to anti-inflammatory medications in the reduction of pain and hours lost from work in acute sore throat.

COMPLETED
Use Ear Acupuncture as Treatment for Low Back Pain During Pregnancy
Description

Ear acupuncture can be used as a treatment for pregnancy induced low back pain.

This research will also help determine whether acupuncture can improve quality of life in patients receiving taxane-based chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer. The names of the study activities involved in this study are/is: * Acupuncture treatments for participants in the Acupuncture Group * Nature videos with a relaxation exercise for participants in the Relaxation/ Exercise Group The Comprehensive and Integrative Medicine Institute (CIMI) of South Korea is supporting this research study by providing funding.

It is not yet known which remedy is more effective in treating chronic dry mouth caused by radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II/III trial is studying ALTENS to see how well it works compared with pilocarpine in treating chronic dry mouth caused by radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer.
