RFA of Benign Thyroid Nodules: Clinical Outcomes and Quality of Life Study
Description

The purpose of this observational research is to evaluate and compare clinical outcomes after treatment for symptomatic benign multinodular goiter (MNG) patients. This is a data collection study in which we ask participants to give access to information generated before and after treatment of their condition.

Effect of Ultrasound Guided Laser Ablation Therapy on Symptomatic Benign Thyroid Nodules
Description

This is a prospective trial to evaluate the effects of laser ablation on symptomatic benign thyroid nodules. The study is designed to assess the clinical efficacy, safety, tolerability and impact on symptoms of single ultrasound guided laser ablation treatment of symptomatic benign thyroid nodules. Approximately 20 subjects will undergo laser ablation of symptomatic benign nodules.

The Effect of Surgeon Emotional Support on Treatment Choice for Low-risk Thyroid Cancer
Description

118 adults with benign thyroid nodules who were seen at a UW Health clinic for a fine needle biopsy and do not need surgery will be enrolled and can expect to be on study for a one-time visit of up to 60 minutes. Each participant will be randomized to watch one of two videos simulating a patient-surgeon discussion about treatment options for low-risk thyroid cancer with or without emotionally supportive statements.

Use of an In Vivo Optical Probe to Discriminate Benign From Malignant Thyroid Nodules
Description

This study will investigate the usefulness of an optical probe in the differentiation of thyroid cancer from normal thyroid tissue in a thyroidectomy specimen. This is the next step in the research that this team has conducted through our prior Institutional Review Board (IRB)H-28135, in which the investigators successfully demonstrated that use of the optical probe readings on thyroid specimens ex vivo could successfully discriminate benign from malignant disease. The Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) probe has also been IRB approved and a clinical trial conducted in vivo at Boston University/Boston Medical Center by Dr. Satish Singh and Dr. Irving Bigio. The investigators intend to now bring this project to the clinical setting of thyroid disease. The optical real-time readings will be compared to the histological analysis from the same area. Subjects already undergoing thyroid biopsy for thyroid disease including thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer and thyroid goiter with nodules will be eligible to participate. During the already scheduled thyroid procedure using a fine needle aspiration biopsy needle, optical readings will be taken from the thyroid gland and these same areas will then be analyzed in the usual standard fashion. The reading will then be correlated with the histological results. In addition, if lymph nodes are biopsied as part of the evaluation they will also be tested prior to histological standard processing. All specimens and data will be de-identified once data collection and analysis is complete. Our goal is to use optical real-time readings to improve the differential diagnosis of benign from malignant thyroid nodules and avoid surgery for the purpose of diagnosis alone.

Radiofrequency Ablation for the Treatment of Benign or Low Risk Thyroid Nodule
Description

This phase IV trial studies the effect of radiofrequency ablation in treating patients with benign or low risk thyroid nodule. Radiofrequency ablation uses a needle to deliver a high-frequency electric current to kill tumor cells by heating them. The goal of this research study is to learn if ultrasound guided radiofrequency ablation can provide the same treatment result as standard surgical removal of the thyroid nodule, small primary thyroid, or thyroid cancers that have come back. Researchers also want to learn if the procedure can be less invasive and perhaps provide a better recovery response than surgery.

Pilot Study on Laser Ablation of Symptomatic Benign Thyroid Masses
Description

This proposal is designed as a pilot study for the use of laser ablation for local control of symptomatic (e.g compressive) benign thyroid masses in 20 patients.
