To Evaluate the Effects of NMRA-335140 on Symptoms of Major Depression in Participants With Bipolar II Disorder.
Description

This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study aiming to evaluate the effects of NMRA-335140 on symptoms of major depression in adults with Bipolar (BP) II disorder. The study design consists of a Screening Period (up to 28 days), a 6-week Treatment Period (during which participants will receive either NMRA-335140 or placebo), and a 6-week Safety Follow-up Period.

Description

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of accelerated intermittent theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (aiTBS) in inducing anti-depressant responses in individuals with treatment-resistant depression of bipolar II disorder. This is a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial that targets a single location on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (LDLPFC) using the MagPro rTMS system.

Description

The purpose of this study is to assess the antidepressant effects of Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) in the depressed phase of bipolar II disorder.; to examine the safety of daily CES in bipolar II patients; and to examine the effects of 20 minutes of daily CES on EEG reading. The investigators hypothesize: 1. The CES will reduce symptom severity more than sham (placebo) CES. 2. That CES administered for 20 minutes daily for four weeks is safe and well tolerated when treating bipolar II patients. 3. That CES will shift the alpha and beta power fractions of EEG downward, and that this shift correlates with a decrease in level of anxiety and depression

Acute Psychotherapy for Bipolar II Depression
Description

This proposed study is designed to compare the efficacy of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) alone to IPSRT plus medication as an acute treatment for bipolar II depression. The investigators propose to conduct a randomized, controlled, trial comparing the effects of IPSRT plus pill placebo to IPSRT plus quetiapine on depressive symptoms in individuals suffering from Bipolar II depression. The investigators will also examine the impact of treatment on psychosocial function.

This study examines the relative safety and benefit of antidepressant therapy (versus recommended mood stabilizer therapy)of bipolar type II major depressive episode. We hypothesize that antidepressant therapy will be superior to mood stabilizer therapy with little or no difference in treatment emergent manic symptoms.

Description

Purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of an experimental psychotherapy (talk therapy) for the treatment of bipolar II depression. The name of this psychotherapy is Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy for Bipolar II Depression (IPSRT-BPII). Subjects will be randomly assigned to receive either IPSRT-BPII or the medication Seroquel (quetiapine) to manage their symptoms of bipolar II depression. Subjects will receive the assigned therapy for up to 20 weeks.

Description

Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Divalproex Sodium ER in Bipolar I or Bipolar II Depression Previously Diagnosed and Treated as Recurrent Major Depression: This study recruits males and females aged 18 - 70 who currently meet diagnostic criteria for bipolar I or bipolar II disorder and are currently experiencing an episode of major depression. Patients are randomized to double-blind treatment with divalproex sodium ER or placebo and remain in the study for up to six weeks. This six-week double-blind treatment period is followed by an open-label treatment period of six months duration. This study is sponsored by Abbott Laboratories.

Differential Responses to Drugs and Sweet Tastes
Description

Young adults who exhibit "bipolar phenotype" (BPP), defined as occasional episodes of mood elevation and heightened activity, are at risk for several psychiatric disorders, including problem use of drugs and alcohol. Mood elevation has been linked to higher alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorders. Individuals with BPP show elevated lifetime prevalence of alcohol use disorders (between 39%-61%), figures that exceed those reported in both major depression and schizophrenia. Recently, the investigators demonstrated in a controlled laboratory study that individuals with BPP (but not meeting criteria for full Bipolar I Disorder), report dampened responses to a single dose of alcohol, compared to placebo. In the current study, the investigators seek to extend these findings to determine if young adults reporting BPP, based on a questionnaire, will exhibit reduced responses to other rewarding stimuli, such as d-amphetamine and sweet tastes. The investigators hypothesize that the BPP individuals will exhibit dampened subjective responses to stimulant and sweet taste rewards compared to healthy controls.

Microbiome of Depression & Treatment Response to Citalopram
Description

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of developing a microbiome probe of depression and to evaluate the microbiome change in a preliminary analysis of treatment response (n=20) vs. non response (n=20) to the antidepressant citalopram. This study is a 12 week open trial that will enroll approximately 80 participants (anticipated 40 study completers with paired biomarker data) with an episode of major depression, Bipolar I or Bipolar II and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Study of Oral ABBV-932 to Assess Adverse Events and Change in Disease Activity in Adult Participants With Bipolar I or II Disorder
Description

Bipolar disorder is a severe chronic mood disorder that affects up to 4% of the adult population in the United States. This study will assess how safe and effective ABBV-932 is in treating participants with bipolar I or II disorder. ABBV-932 is an investigational drug being developed for the treatment of depressive episodes in adult participants with bipolar I or II disorder. Study doctors put participants in 1 of 4 groups, called treatment arms. There is a 1 in 4 chance that a participant will be assigned to placebo. Around 160 adult participants with bipolar I or II disorder will be enrolled in approximately 40 sites worldwide. Participants will receive oral capsules of ABBV-932 or matching placebo once daily for 6 weeks. The treatment period will be followed by a safety follow-up (SFU) period for 4 weeks. There may be higher treatment burden for participants in this trial compared to their standard of care. Participants will attend regular weekly visits during the study at a hospital or clinic. The effect of the treatment will be checked by medical assessments, blood tests, checking for side effects and completing questionnaires.

Children's Bipolar Network Treatment Trial I
Description

This is a naturalistic treatment and follow-up study of youth with bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) across four US sites of The Childhood Bipolar Network (CBN). CBN sites have expertise in diagnosing, assessing, and treating BSDs in youth. The primary aims of this study are to (1) identify and reliably diagnose youth (ages 9 to 19 yrs) with full bipolar disorder (BD) and BSDs, and (2) examine predictors (e.g., mood instability, inflammatory marker C-reactive protein) of clinical outcome over a 12 month period. Participating youth will initially complete a screening that includes a structured diagnostic interview and a baseline blood draw to measure inflammatory processes. Youth with BSD and parents (80 families) will be asked to participate in multiple follow up research visits with interviews, rating instruments, and questionnaires. Per established CBN guidelines, study psychiatrists will provide and track medication management and sites will also track psychosocial treatments. This study ultimately aims to further understanding of best practice pediatric BSD psychiatric and psychosocial treatments and development of a standardized and validated set of clinical tools for patient assessment, diagnosis, and tracking.

This research study evaluates the effects of anFDA-approved medication NAC in individuals with Bipolar Disorder. Participants in the study will will be assigned to two medication conditions and will take both NAC and a matched placebo. The order in which they take each medication will be random. Study medication will be taken for 14 days. There will be 5 study visits, with 2 MRI brain imaging scans completed. Questionnaires and clinical interview measures will be completed at study visits along with consistent assessment of potential side effects from study medication.

This research study evaluates the effects of an FDA-approved medication Gabapentin in individuals with Bipolar Disorder who smoke marijuana. Participants in the study will will be assigned to take either Gabapentin or a matched placebo. Study medication will be taken for 17 days. There will be 5 study visits, with 2 MRI brain imaging scans completed. Description

The proposed 2-week, double-blind, crossover, proof of concept study aims to measure and manipulate core neurochemical (i.e., dysregulated brain GABA/glutamate homeostasis) and neurobehavioral (i.e., elevated impulsivity) dysfunctions characteristic of individuals with cannabis use disorder (CUD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD), using a medication that has been shown to increase cortical GABA (i.e., gabapentin) levels in past research, and to evaluate medication-related changes in response inhibition (go no-go) and cannabis cue reactivity functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging tasks, as well as cannabis use, mood symptoms (including anxiety and sleep), and impulsivity in individuals with CUD+BD.

Ginger.io Behavioral Health Study
Description

This Study will evaluate the impact of a smartphone-based platform on a range of outcomes for medically-underserved patients with mood disorders (e.g. depression, anxiety, bipolar) cared for in a large statewide community health center. The primary goal of the Study is to reduce emergency room (ER) visits, hospitalizations, and to look at changes in service utilization by using the Ginger.io platform to enhance communication between behavioral health providers and their patients, increasing the early detection of exacerbations in mood disorders (e.g. depression, anxiety, bipolar) and proactive outreach. The secondary goal is to improve clinical \& behavioral health outcomes.

Open-Label Study of Latuda for the Treatment of Mania in Children and Adolescents 6-17 Years Old
Description

This study is an 8-week open-label trial testing Lurasidone (Latuda®) as a treatment for mania in children and adolescents with Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Bipolar Spectrum disorders. We hypothesize that Lurasidone will be safe, tolerable, and effective in improving the core symptoms of bipolar disorders in children and adolescents ages 6-17.
