Efficacy of Osteopathic Manipulation on Breathing Mechanics in a Healthy Population: A Randomized Controlled Study
Description

This study focused on improving breathing mechanics by using various osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) techniques. The investigators randomly assigned participants to a control group who received sham treatment and a treatment group who received OMT. The investigators measured variable pre- and post- treatment on both groups. The investigators observed an improvement in breathing mechanics in the treatment group.

Ventilator Mode and Respiratory Physiology
Description

Modern intensive care units (ICUs) are increasingly adopting newer modes of mechanical ventilation such as adaptive pressure control (APC) modes but there are limited data available regarding risks and benefits of newer modes versus traditional ventilation modes. APC can inadvertently deliver high tidal volumes, which maybe harmful. High tidal volumes may be unrecognized by the provider, due to the complexities of ventilator algorithms and patient interactions. The objective of this aim is to identify risk factors for excess tidal volumes in patients on adaptive pressure control.

Efficacy Study of a Novel Device to Clean the Endotracheal Tube
Description

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the in-vivo efficacy of a novel device (endOclear) for cleaning the endotracheal tube (ETT) lumen from secretions. The investigators hypothesize that a protocol of routine ETT cleaning with endOclear may increase the ETT luminal volume measured at extubation compared to the current standard of care. The device may therefore be clinically useful by better maintaining the ETT original function.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the respiratory rate provided by the Kai Sensors RSpot 100 Non-Contact Respiratory Rate Spot Check is as accurate as that provided by the Welch Allyn Propaq Encore model 242 and the Embla Embletta system with Universal XactTrace respiratory effort sensor and Somnologica for Embletta software.
