The purpose of this study is to investigate areas of the brain responsible for avoidance learning in adults with eating disorders using brain imaging techniques, computer tasks, and self-report questionnaires and interviews. The investigators will study changes in brain activity using a procedure called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study will include 78 women with an eating disorder (26 with anorexia nervosa \[AN\], 26 with bulimia nervosa \[BN\]) and 26 healthy controls (HC) aged 18-39. Aim 1: Evaluate behavioral differences in active and passive avoidance learning in eating disorders and associations with symptoms. Aim 2: Evaluate whether corticostriatal and limbic-prefrontal fMRI BOLD response associated with avoidance learning differs in eating disorders relative to healthy controls and relates to symptoms. Aim 3: Evaluate whether functional connectivity of avoidance learning neural circuity differs in eating disorders relative to healthy controls.
The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of two technology-based intervention systems (including an Advanced Digital Data Sharing (ADDS) with Coaches or a smartphone-based just-in-time, adaptive interventions (JITAIs) system) for improving treatment adherence, skills utilization and binge eating when used in conjunction with a self-help cognitive behavior therapy \[CBT\] delivered via a smartphone application \[app\]). The study is being conducted to test a novel approach to providing evidence-based treatment for binge eating without clinician support in a routine clinical setting.
This study will test the feasibility and acceptability of two treatments for adolescents with higher weight seeking treatment for bulimia nervosa (binge eating and purging, or going to extremes to lose weight).
We will evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a 8-week long digital mindfulness-based intervention for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This study is a prospective single-arm trial during the intervention development phase. Following this phase, after the intervention has been further developed, a subsequent study (with a different clinicaltrials.gov identification #) will utilize a randomized control trial design.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of noninvasive prefrontal cortex (PFC) neurofeedback during eating in women with bulimia nervosa (BN) using a wearable brain imaging device, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The investigators will examine how this training may influence inhibitory control and BN symptoms.
The purpose of this study is to investigate areas of the brain responsible for 'liking', 'wanting', and learning in adults with eating disorders using brain imaging techniques, computer tasks, a test meal, and self-report questionnaires and interviews. The investigators will study changes in brain activity using a procedure called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study will include 252 women with an eating disorder (63 AN-restricting type (AN-R), 63 AN-binge eating/purging type (AN-BP), 63 bulimia nervosa (BN)) and 63 healthy controls (HC) aged 18-39. Aim 1: To examine neural differences in 'liking' and 'wanting' in ED relative to HC. Aim 2: To examine differences in instrumental learning for reward and punishment in ED relative to HC. Aim 3: To examine how 'liking' and 'wanting' drive instrumental learning in ED and predict clinical symptoms at baseline and 1 year later. Exploratory Aim: To explore the associations of dopamine function, as measured by neuromelanin MRI (NM-MRI), with ED diagnosis and brain response to 'liking', 'wanting', and learning.
The purpose of this investigation is to identify the potentially crucial role of anticipatory reward mechanisms maintaining bulimic behavior (i.e., binge eating and purging) in bulimia nervosa (BN). The research will investigate neural and psychological anticipatory processes in BN, both in the scanner and the natural environment.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT), a well-validated treatment for adolescents with depression and suicidality, is feasible and acceptable for adolescents with binge eating and their families.
The purpose of this study is to investigate areas of the brain responsible for appetite regulation. More specifically, the investigators would like to study changes in brain activation, e.g., changes in blood flow and oxygen use of the brain, during two different states: Once when the participants are hungry, and once when the participants are not hungry. The aim is to find out more about the neurobiology of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa by comparing women who never had an eating disorder with women who have recovered from Anorexia or Bulimia Nervosa.
The current study will use a full factorial design to identify the independent and combined effects of four core MABT components when combined with standard behavioral treatment for BN and BED. The primary aim of the study will be to evaluate the independent efficacy of Mindful Awareness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Modulation, and Values-Based Decision Making on eating pathology (at posttreatment and at 6 and 12-month follow-ups). Secondary aims will be (1) to test target engagement of each MABT component, i.e., to confirm that each treatment component impacts both the variable which it targets and self-regulation and that improvements in these are associated with improvements in outcomes and (2) to test the hypotheses that the efficacy of each component is moderated by related baseline deficits in self-regulation (e.g. individuals with worse distress tolerance at baseline are most likely to benefit from conditions that include the Distress Tolerance component). A final exploratory aim will be to quantify the component interaction effects, which may be partially additive (because components overlap and/or there is diminishing return), fully additive, or synergistic (in that components may partially depend on each other).
This study examines the influence of acute fasting and eating on self-control in adult females with and without bulimia nervosa (BN). Specifically, the study team is investigating whether differences in behavior and brain activation in response to computer tasks after fasting and after eating a meal could help to explain the symptoms of bulimia nervosa. Data will be collected using questionnaires and a technology called magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
This pilot study examines the effect of stabilizing ovarian hormones on eating behaviors and brain activation in women with binge eating (n=15) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and behavioral tests. This is completed by taking oral contraceptives (birth control) continuously for three months. Prior to medication administration and at the end of treatment, eating behaviors will be measured and fMRI will be conducted in order to examine changes in activation in dopamine-reward pathways that occur with oral contraceptive administration. This will assess changes in brain activation that occur with the stabilization of ovarian hormones.
This pilot study experimentally manipulates ovarian hormones to examine the direct impact of estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P4) on binge eating symptom burden and the behavioral reward response in women with bulimia nervosa (n=15). This is completed by taking medications that change ovarian hormone levels. This line of research could lead to the development of pharmacological interventions developed to target specific areas of the brain, brain receptors, or pathways identified to be involved in the mechanism underlying ovarian hormone change and binge eating.
The Binge Eating Genetics Initiative (BEGIN) is an observational study where individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED) or bulimia nervosa (BN) complete assessments about eating disorder history, current disordered eating behavior, and mood. Participants also provide active data on binge eating, purging, nutrition, and cognitions using Recovery Record on the Apple Watch. Passive sensor data are collected via native applications over a 30-day period in 1000 individuals with BED or BN. Investigators will combine longitudinal passive (Apple Watch) and active (Recovery Record) data to predict when patients are at high risk of binge eating or purging. Results will enable the deployment of real-time, in-the-moment, personalized signaling of impending binge or purge episodes that will interrupt automatic behaviors and empower patients to exert control over binge eating and purging by engaging in therapeutic alternatives.
The current study will be one of the first to develop and test a passive data collection technique to detect both meal consumption and disordered eating symptoms in patients with clinically significant binge eating and the first just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) systems using passive sensing technology for eating pathology to be empirically evaluated. A small iterative open clinical trial using an ABAB design (A= SenseSupport Off, B=SenseSupport On) will be conducted to test the feasibility, acceptability, and target engagement of SenseSupport when paired with a 12 week in-person CBT treatment program. The hypothesis that larger decreases in dietary restriction will be observed during SenseSupport On phases compared to SenseSupport Off phases will be tested in this clinical trial.
Binge-eating is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of - typically high calorie - foods, eating much more rapidly than normal and until feeling uncomfortably full, as well as feeling disgusted with oneself, depressed, or guilty after those episodes. Two eating disorders are characterized by binge-eating as central diagnostic criteria, binge-eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Binge-eating episodes in BN, but not BED, are typically followed by compensatory mechanisms such as self-induced vomiting, and BED is typically associated with obesity, while BN is not. Behavior studies such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA) research of affect in an individual's naturalistic environment have shown that negative affect and negative urgency (the tendency to act rashly when distressed) often precede binge-eating. The Investigators want to answer the following questions: Can negative affect in BN and BED be linked to 1) altered dopamine related brain reinforcement learning, 2) to food value computation and cognitive control circuit function, and 3) can dopamine related brain activation predict eating and negative affect, indicating a brain based neurobiological vulnerability. Answering those questions will help to define binge-eating based on regulation of brain reward, cognition, and emotion circuit function and point toward potential psychopharmacological interventions to normalize brain function and behavior.

Data collection will rely on a technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
The purpose of the study is to test a novel, acceptance-based behavioral treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN) in adults. This treatment is a type of individual psychotherapy called Nutritional Counseling And Acceptance-Based Therapy (N-CAAT) that enhances existing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for BN by incorporating acceptance-based behavioral strategies and nutritional counseling to help patients eliminate BN symptoms.
This study will demonstrate the efficacy of Qsymia versus placebo in treating bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
The purpose of this study will be to replicate previous findings of deficits in prefrontal activation during response inhibition tasks in bulimia nervosa and extend these findings by demonstrating similar deficiencies in activity during a functional behavioral task that requires the inhibition of eating. Findings from this study will potentially help to elucidate the underlying neural mechanisms of bulimia nervosa, and thus inform treatment and prevention efforts.
The purpose of this study is to examine biological (e.g., energy expenditure, neuroendocrine and appetitive hormones)and behavioral (e.g., binge eating and purging) correlates of weight suppression and current dieting status in women with bulimia nervosa. The investigators have differentiated between a diet-induced long-term energy imbalance (weight suppression, or the difference between one's highest-ever body weight and current weight) and a short-term energy imbalance (current dieting to either lose weight or avoid weight gain). This study will elucidate how two common yet largely unexplored types of dieting influence biological and behavioral variables in patients with bulimia nervosa, which could lead to modifications of prevailing models of bulimia nervosa and new strategies for improving treatment outcome.

The primary objective of this 13-week clinical trial is to test the hypothesis that treatment with Memantine will significantly improve the symptoms of those suffering from either bulimia nervosa, purging type or suffering from body dysmorphic disorder.
The specific aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in the treatment on bulimia nervosa.
The goal of this study is to generate pilot data exploring the addition of an augmentation (additional) medication to patients suffering from bulimia nervosa who have responded but not had complete symptom resolution with a course of standard medication treatment.
We are interested in studying two different psychological treatments for eating disorders for adolescents (ages 12-18). The study is designed to help adolescents who are having problems with binge eating and/or purging. The treatment consists of 14 sessions of approximately one-hour each over about three months.
In the face of scant literature on the subject, the investigators aim to more clearly identify effective treatments for adolescent bulimia nervosa (BN) through a treatment study comparing two current treatments (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents, CBT-A and Family Based Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa, FBT-BN) for the disorder in comparison with a non-specific therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy for Adolescent Bulimia (SPT). Additionally, the investigators hope to provide clinicians with information on treatment efficacy, variables that might influence outcome, and processes that may affect treatment efficacy that will guide them in their efforts to treat adolescent BN.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa (CBT4BN) is a research program funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and conducted by the UNC Eating Disorders Program and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment and the gold-standard for treating bulimia nervosa. The current study aims to compare two forms of CBT: face-to-face group therapy and online group therapy via cbt4bn.org.
This study will compare a new method of treatment for bulimia nervosa (ICAT), integrative cognitive-affective therapy, to the current standard method of treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
