The goal of this research study is learn about how often cancer patients engage in physical activity using the exercise behavior questionnaire. This is an investigational study. Up to 200 participants will be enrolled in this study. All will take part at MD Anderson.
This is an open label feasibility pilot study of commercially available physical activity monitoring devices in patients receiving systemic therapy at the Harold Simmons Cancer Center, UT Southwestern Medical Center.

This randomized pilot clinical trial studies how well a computer-based behavior change guide works in increasing physical activity in patients with prostate cancer who have received androgen deprivation therapy. A computer-based behavior change guide website may increase physical activity level for prostate cancer survivors and help doctors understand what outcomes related to becoming physically active are most important to patients with prostate cancer.
The purpose of this study is to understand if a home-based physical activity program can improve symptoms and physical function among patients with advanced stage cancer.
Participation in regular physical activity is vital to a healthy lifestyle. Research has shown that regular participation in physical activity among cancer survivors is not only able to improve health outcomes, but is also related to their quality of life. As we live in an age of technology, health wearables and smartphone apps might be one novel manner by which to help cancer survivors increase physical activity as well as improve health outcomes. Yet, the effectiveness of wearable and app as a tool for health promotion among cancer survivors is largely unstudied. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a personalized m-health intervention via fitness wearable (Fitbit Inspire 3) exercise app (sFitRx) on physical activity, weight, quality of life, individual beliefs, and emotions among cancer survivors.
This is a single-center, pilot, hybrid type 1 design implementation study to evaluate the feasibility and implementation of a personalized digital exercise program and a virtual support group to improve patient-centered outcomes in patients receiving treatment for gynecologic cancer receiving treatment at University of California, San Francisco.
This study attempts to learn more about the activity levels of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients or survivors at risk for cardiovascular morbidity and frailty by using a smartphone application called Beiwe. Collecting activity level data on AYA cancer patients or survivors may help patients achieve better quality of life.
This study adapts and assesses the effect of a multicomponent physical activity intervention in reducing psychosocial distress in cancer patients. This study aims to develop a program to help increase physical activity and reduce stress in cancer survivors who live in rural areas.
This clinical trial evaluates the tolerability of a physical activity program in head and neck cancer patients who are undergoing cancer treatment. The goal of this trial is to give patients exercises prescribed by a physical therapist that they are able to complete regularly at home. Increasing physical activity may help patients reduce fatigue, improve mood, increase physical performance, and decrease joint pain.
Among 13 core symptoms across 3,106 breast, colorectal, prostate, and lung cancer patients, persons with lung cancer were the most symptomatic, with moderate to severe fatigue being reported with the greatest prevalence. This is a proposed randomized controlled trial of a novel rehabilitative intervention for persons with non-small cell lung cancer after surgery that promotes self-management of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and is practical, portable, low cost, and safe. The results of the study will provide a novel exercise intervention, and its optimal timing, that helps a vulnerable population by reducing CRF severity and fatigability and is applicable to nearly all post-thoracotomy lung cancer patients.
The investigators seek to conduct a home based exercise intervention in breast cancer patients whom elect to undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The primary aim of the study is to determine whether breast cancer patients can be enrolled, randomized, retained, and comply with exercise program; and, the feasibility of acquiring, managing and analyzing clinical data.
This randomized controlled trial will evaluate, among 54 stage early stage lung cancer patients, whether a behavioral intervention versus an educational Control group results in improved function at 6-months.

This main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of an exercise intervention to counteract adverse side effects related to Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) in prostate cancer patients. Specifically, a supervised and home-based exercise program will be used to assess its impact on clinical and behavioral variables related to ADT in prostate cancer patients.
The main goal of this phase of the study is to determine if objectively assessed Physical Activity (PA) levels in advanced-cancer patients are associated with health care provider (HCP)-assessed ECOG performance status and overall survival. The purpose is to advance the evidence-base for incorporating objective assessment of Physical Activity (PA) in the context of performance status assessment in advanced cancer patients.
This research seeks to determine if a combination of low-dose ibuprofen along with a structured home-based walking and progressive resistance exercise program, EXCAP, will be effective in reducing cognitive difficulties among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
The proposed study compares the outcomes of a physical activity intervention begun at diagnosis, continuing through active cancer treatment and into six months of survivorship compared to the outcomes of a control group receiving limited information on activity.
This study will develop and test the benefits of a new ICCS (Interactive Cancer Communication System), a mobile Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (Survivorship CHESS) in colon cancer survivors. Survivorship CHESS will provide information, tools, and a support system based on our previous work with FRESH START and CHESS, two highly successful interventions that have promoted lifestyle change among cancer patients and survivors. Survivorship CHESS will be designed to help subjects develop 1) competence in information gathering, decision-making, and behaviors they are trying to change, 2) social support systems to help deal with the cancer experience, and 3) autonomy that comes with regaining a sense of control over their lives; this in turn, will help them adopt or maintain healthy lifestyle behaviors and improve their quality of life.
60 eligible subjects will be randomized into one of three study arms 1) aerobic exercise, 2) resistance exercise, or 3) usual care. Baseline measurements will be done on all study subjects, these measurements include: height, weight, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for bone mineral density and lean body mass measurements, blood will be taken to measure serum free testosterone, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), glucose, and insulin levels. Fitness will also be evaluated using a graded exercise test. Questionnaires on health and personal history will also be completed. Men randomized to the aerobic exercise treatment arm will participate in a walking program three times a week for eight weeks. The participants will start at 15 minutes per session and increase to a goal of 60 minutes per session. Men randomized to the resistance training treatment arm will participate in an eight-week program of eight strength training exercises three times per week. Men in the usual care arm will receive written materials from the American Cancer Society about coping with cancer, which includes information about participation in physical activity. At the end of the eight week intervention participants in all three study arms will complete the same questionnaires and measurements they completed at baseline.
Observational research has linked physical activity with faster recovery, improved quality of life, and greater survival; however, little is known about the effects of physical activity in pre-operative, peri-operative, or post-operative treatment contexts and there is a need for interventions to improve patient outcomes across the cancer treatment continuum. Three propositions derived from basic research, epidemiological evidence, and clinical practice informed our intervention development efforts: (1) Patient outcomes will be enhanced by interventions that increase physical activity (i.e., standing, walking) across the cancer treatment continuum (i.e., pre-operative, peri-operative, post-operative). (2) Reducing sedentary behavior (i.e., seated or reclined activities involving minimal energy expenditure) will enhance patient outcomes both by increasing physical activity and by stimulating additional adaptive physiological responses to reduced sedentary time (responses which are independent of physical activity-induced responses). (3) Patients with gastrointestinal cancers often suffer functional limitations that limit their independence and their health behaviors are strongly influenced by the family environment so interventions that engage caregivers (e.g., spouses) will be more effective than those that target patients/survivors alone.
To determine the feasibility of processes and instruments with an overarching purpose to guide the design of a larger study. To determine the feasibility of individuals with metastatic brain tumor(s) to engage in physical activity(PA) and cognitive rehabilitation (CR) as in an outpatient therapy setting.
This randomized phase II trial studies how well ethyl icosapentate and physical activity work in treating fatigue in patients with cancer that has spread from where it started to other places in the body. Ethyl icosapentate and physical activity may provide more robust and clinically effective improvement of cancer related fatigue, which may facilitate patients continuing cancer therapy since it would be tolerated and effective in controlling disease.
This pilot clinical trial studies different types of energy balance interventions to see how well they work in increasing the physical activity levels of breast cancer gene-positive patients, Lynch syndrome-positive patients, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) survivors or family members of cancer survivors who are at high risk for cancer. Increasing exercise and eating healthy foods may help reduce the risk of cancer. Studying how well different types of interventions work in motivating cancer survivors or high-risk family members to increase exercise and healthy food choices may help doctors plan the most effective motivational program for cancer prevention.
This clinical trial studies the effects of a diet and physical activity intervention on blood measures of lipids and insulin resistance in patients with prostate cancer undergoing radiation therapy (RT) and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). ADT effectively slows the growth of prostate cancer cells, thereby enhancing the therapeutic effectiveness of RT. Despite the clinical gains, ADT leads to an array of side effects including insulin resistance, abnormal lipid levels, weight gain, increased visceral fat mass coupled with increased muscle wasting, and quality of life deterioration. A diet and physical activity intervention may intercept or prevent the abrupt metabolic and physiologic changes caused by androgen deprivation therapy in prostate cancer patients receiving ADT and RT.
This phase II/III trial studies how well physical activity with or without dexamethasone works in reducing cancer-related fatigue in patients with cancer that has spread to other places in the body or has come back. Dexamethasone may decrease the body's immune response. Combining physical activity with dexamethasone may help to treat fatigue in patients with cancer.
This clinical trial studies movement tracking devices in optimizing and monitoring physical activity in patients with solid tumors undergoing chemotherapy in a health care facility during the day without spending the night. Movement tracking devices, such as Microsoft Kinect 2 and Microsoft Band 2, may help doctors learn about the health of cancer patients.
This phase II trial studies how well anamorelin hydrochloride, physical activity, and nutritional counseling work in decreasing cancer-related fatigue in patients with incurable solid tumors that have spread to other parts of the body or have come back. Anamorelin hydrochloride, physical activity, and nutritional counseling may help to decrease cancer-related fatigue in patients with solid tumors.
This randomized phase II trial studies how well physical activity and dexamethasone work in reducing cancer-related fatigue in patients with cancer that has spread to other places in the body and usually cannot be cured or controlled with treatment (advanced). Dexamethasone is approved for the treatment of tiredness, pain, and nausea. Physical activity may help improve cancer-related fatigue by improvement in symptoms, distress, and overall well-being. It is not yet known whether high dose or low dose dexamethasone combined with physical activity works better in reducing fatigue in patients with advanced cancer.
This study will see if patient who undergo a physical activity intervention called Walk With Ease report experiencing less fatigue and a higher quality of life during chemotherapy for colorectal cancer than those who do not participate in this intervention.
