This study is designed to study the feasibility and acceptability of the Open to Options (O2O) Chatbot prototype. The O2O program is an existing patient support program with content currently delivered via in-person counseling with a trained mental health professional or via an existing web-based program (Let's Talk Treatment Options).The Chatbot is an automated, menu-based agent being developed in this study to extend the reach and accessibility of the O2O program via the Chatbot's "virtual coaching".
The number of cancer survivors today is growing exponentially and many survivors have unmet needs due to the late side effects of treatment. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact that a four-week Occupational Therapy Health and Wellness Program has on perceived satisfaction and performance of daily activities, fatigue, sleep quality, and health-related quality of life among adult community-dwelling cancer survivors. Eligibility criteria for prospective participants includes cancer survivors with a past or present diagnosis that are at least 18 years old, able to consent, are English speaking, are able to fill out demographic information as well as pretest/posttest questionnaires, have indicated concerns within performance of daily activities and are able and willing to participate in a four-week Occupational Therapy Health and Wellness Program. This quantitative study will use a prospective, one-group pretest-posttest design to explore the effects of a four-week Occupational Therapy Health and Wellness Program. Data that will be collected to track changes include physical, mental, and social health (measured by PROMIS questionnaire); fatigue levels (measured by the MAF questionnaire); Sleep quality (measured by the PSQI questionnaire); and self-perceived occupational performance and satisfaction (measured by the COPM interview/questionnaire) of community-dwelling cancer survivors. Descriptive statistics will be used to compare pretest/posttest scores. Matched pairs t-test and Wilcoxin signed ranks test will be used if data is normally distributed. Normality will be tested by Shapiro wilks test and all data will be analyzed using t-tailed tests with significance set at .05.
The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of a collaborative care intervention to manage cancer-related symptoms and improve health related quality of life in patients diagnosed with hepatobiliary carcinoma.
The study's aim is to provide information about the clinical and business cases for comprehensive interactive cancer communication systems (ICCS) in the context of real world use for cancer care. This study will be conducted within the Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) healthcare system. Outcomes for this study include amount of ICCS use and women's ratings of cancer information competence, perceived social support, and emotional well being. Secondary outcomes will include healthcare utilization, cost-effectiveness, and clinician ratings of healthcare visits.
The goal of this research study is to learn if a support group program is acceptable for patients with prostate cancer or patients with breast cancer. Researchers also want to learn if the characteristics of the members of the support group program can have an effect on the quality of life of other members of the support group program. Support group programs will be conducted separately for prostate cancer patients and breast cancer patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to evaluate whether psychosocial outcomes in women with breast cancer differ based on the format of online group support. This objective will be addressed by the following specific aims: 1. Specific Aim #1 is to determine if there is a difference in depressive symptoms between women with breast cancer assigned to one of two treatment conditions: moderated online support or peer-led online support. • H1: Women with breast cancer who participate in moderated online support will report fewer depressive symptoms than women with breast cancer in peer led online support. 2. Specific Aim #2 is to determine if there is a difference in perceived social support between women with breast cancer who are assigned to one of two treatment conditions: moderated online support or peer-led online support. • H2: Women with breast cancer who participate in moderated online support will report greater perceived social support than women with breast cancer in peer-led online support. 3. Specific Aim #3 is to determine if there is a difference in quality of life in women with breast cancer who are assigned to one of two treatment conditions: moderated online support or peer-led online support. * H3: Women with breast cancer who participate in moderated online support will report better quality of life than women with breast cancer in peer-led online support. NOTE: Once the study began, it was obvious that we could not prevent anyone from joining a support group, if that was her choice. We also could not control if participants joined a second online support group or face-to-face group during the study. Therefore, we decided to omit a "usual care" (no support) group. The study was completed with just two groups: moderated and peer-support.
This is a 6-state randomized controlled trial (RCT) that uses a behavioral intervention to enhance parenting skills for school age children when a mother is recently diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Efficacy analyses will include measures of the child's and mother's psychosocial adjustment, including enhanced parenting quality and skills related to the cancer.
Women with primary breast cancer may benefit from participating in supports groups as they cope with treatment and the psychological challenges of survivorship. Studies have documented that these women benefit from support groups run in a university setting; however, no one has documented that they benefit from community cancer support groups. Many community cancer support groups exist and provide service to a large number of women with breast cancer. It is important to know if these groups are providing comparable service to well researched support groups. We conducted this study as the first randomized study of community compared to university-style support groups. Women had a 50/50 chance of being assigned to either a community or a university style support group based on a coin flip. This study took place in two sites The Wellness Community East Bay (Walnut Creek) and San Francisco. Two community groups were studied. i) This study evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of two community-based support group interventions for breast cancer patients \[The Wellness (TWC) and Cancer Support (CSC) Communities, in the San Francisco area\]. We compared them with a type of therapy developed in the university setting (Stanford's Supportive-Expressive group therapy), studied which aspects are most effective, and who benefits the most. We compared these women on change in emotional distress, means of coping with cancer, and social and family support. In addition, change in physiological response to stress was measured using saliva samples. ii) We were able to achieve recruitment for 6 of 8 groups proposed. We randomized 72 women in blocks of 12 taking consecutive women per site until we accrued 12 for each group. Of those, 61 women actually attended groups, of those 46 women to date completed at least one follow-up and were available for analysis for this report. We screened 108 women, 16 who were screened out on initial phone contact, 20 women began to go through our baseline interviews and assessments and either decided not to enroll or dropped out before we could compose a group for the second S.F. randomization. Our final two follow-up assessments for our final group in the East Bay are being conducted right now (8 month) and will be conducted in October, 2002 (12 month) so they are not available for assay or analysis for this final report. iii) We examined 5 outcome variables for this report and found that women participating in the community groups changed at about the same level over the 4 months of group therapy as the women in the Stanford groups. This was true for depression symptoms, trauma symptoms, social support, self-efficacy, and post-traumatic-growth. These analyses are preliminary until we complete our final follow-up assessments. It is encouraging for the community groups that women benefited at the same rate as they did in the well-researched Stanford groups. Conclusions for this study are somewhat limited because we could not complete the recruitment of our entire sample. However, there is every reason to suppose that community groups are as effective at serving women with primary breast cancer as Stanford's groups though they are based on very different ideas of therapy. It is important to note that all of these groups were led by therapists, and that we may have found other results if the groups had been led by peers or other types of professionals. This study reduces the human and economic cost of breast cancer in California by validating community groups usually offered free to women with breast cancer.
Our aim for this study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability and explore potential outcomes of the adapted FOCUS On Us intervention in a two-arm pilot trial. The investigators will randomize 80 sexual and/or gender minority (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, etc.) cancer patients and their ≥80 informal caregivers (total N≥160) to either FOCUS On Us (adapted from the evidence-based FOCUS program) or a waitlist control.
CG53135-05 (velafermin), a recombinant human fibroblast growth factor-20 (rhFGF-20) protein, is under investigation for the prevention of oral mucositis. Oral mucositis is a commonly occurring side effect of high-dose chemotherapy in patients undergoing autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant. The objective of this Phase II trial is to confirm the safety and efficacy of CG53135-05 (velafermin) when administered as a single dose to patients at risk for developing oral mucositis.

This study examines how virtual support can enhance well-being and survivorship in men with testicular cancer. Participants in North Carolina will be randomized into two groups: one with access to a virtual support platform and the other with access to patient educational materials only. After six months, the emotional well-being, self-efficacy, financial toxicity, and quality of life of both groups will be compared at 3 months and 6 months after baseline assessments.
Early lung cancer screening (LCS) through low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is crucial but underused due to various barriers, including incomplete or inaccurate patient smoking data in the electronic health record and limited time for shared decision-making. The objective of this trial is to investigate a patient-centered intervention, MyLungHealth, delivered through the patient portal. The intervention is designed to improve LCS rates through increased identification of eligible patients and informed decision making.
The purpose of this study is to help test an idea designed to foster more supportive talk between providers (doctors or nurse practitioners), patients, and caregivers during an outpatient oncology appointment. A caregiver is the person the patient identifies is primarily involved in their healthcare. This study is collecting your reaction to this idea in order to understand needed changes before we introduce the idea to a larger group of patients.
This cluster-randomized comparative effectiveness trial compares a technology-based supportive cancer care (SCC) approach with a redesigned team-based supportive cancer care (SCC) approach.
This study is evaluating if a program that involves remote monitoring and home-based care may improve the post-discharge care of recently hospitalized patients with advanced cancer. The Supportive Oncology Care at Home intervention consists of three key components: 1. Remote patient monitoring (e.g. patient-reported symptoms, home-monitored vital signs and body weight); 2. A Medically Home care model for symptom assessment, evaluation, and management (e.g. triggers for phone calls and visits to patients' homes to address and manage any concerning issues identified); 3. Structured communication with the oncology team to ensure continuity of care.
This research study is evaluating a program that entails remote monitoring and home-based care for people with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or chemoradiotherapy.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate pharmacogenomics (PGx) guided drug prescribing for pain and depression in patients with cancer. The investigators aim to understand how PGx testing can be used to improve medication management for pain and depression, and whether PGx-guided prescribing improves these symptoms and quality of life compared to historical controls.
This protocol involves a randomized controlled trial (N=240) to test the efficacy of the Deep south Active Lifestyle (DIAL intervention) telephone-based physical activity counseling intervention vs. a wait list condition. Assessments of MVPA and psychosocial variables will occur at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months. Primary aim. Test the efficacy of DIAL intervention vs. wait list control. Hypotheses are that the participants receiving DIAL intervention will report significantly greater increases in MVPA (based on 7-Day Physical Activity Recalls, accelerometers) from baseline to 6 and 12 months than the wait list control arm. Exploratory Aims. Examine 1) Intervention effects on physical performance and psychosocial variables (anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance; corroborate self report sleep improvements from pilot with accelerometry); 2) Changes in MVPA from 12-18 months to assess long term (6 months post-intervention) maintenance in the intervention arm and ascertain replicability of intervention effects in wait list control arm; 3) Intervention costs; 4) Potential mediators (social support from family, friends, CHAs, theoretical constructs directly targeted by the intervention) and moderators (education, neighborhood/environmental features) of treatment efficacy; 5) Potential barriers/ facilitators to widespread implementation of DIAL intervention in rural Black belt counties by Deep South Network for Cancer Control. This proposal tests an intervention which acts on multiple levels of the socio-ecological model and uses IVR technology to enhance the potential for scaling and sustainability for broad use in populations at high risk for sedentary behavior (residents of rural Black counties in the Deep South).
The goal of this research is to study an intervention, which the investigators call "Supportive Oncology Care at Home," that entails both remote patient monitoring (e.g. patient-reported symptoms, home monitored vital signs, and body weight) and a Medically Home care model (e.g. triggers for phone calls and visits to patients' homes to address and manage any concerning issues identified). Specifically, the investigators will conduct a single arm pilot study (N=20) in patients with pancreatic cancer who sign consent for parent trial of neoadjuvant FOLFIRINOX (18-179) receiving preoperative FOLFIRINOX to assess the feasibility and acceptability of Supportive Oncology Care at Home.
RATIONALE: A multimedia education program for family caregivers that teaches simple methods of touch and massage for the comfort of cancer patients at home may be effective in lowering stress, reducing symptoms, and improving quality of life for patients; and may improve caregiver satisfaction and self-efficacy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well multimedia instruction of caregivers in use of touch and massage works for cancer patients and their care partners.
This study will compare the effects of a brief supportive intervention, called Pathways, against enhanced usual care on the mental health and quality of life of people undergoing treatment for advanced lung cancer. Patients will complete baseline survey measures and be randomized to intervention. Survey measures will be collected again mid-intervention, post-intervention and at 6- and 12-week follow-up, with analyses focused on changes pre- to post-intervention.
The purpose of this study is to find out if patients with lung cancer and their main informal caregiver (person providing physical, emotional, or financial support) are helped by getting information, support, and decision making tools through a computer system called CHESS(the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System)
The purpose of this research study is to see how the brain changes in patients receiving chemotherapy (cytotoxic drug) treatment for colon or rectal cancer at Parkview Cancer Institute. This information will be used to identify helpful tests to diagnose individuals at risk for developing difficulties with thinking and memory due to their cancer treatments.
The research question we pose is, Does a colorectal cancer (CRC) screening decision support tool offered in advance of primary care visits increase CRC screening completion rates? Our work aims to answer this question by evaluating the effectiveness of an MGB decision support tool to 1) promote informed decisions about CRC screening for average risk patients ages 45-75, 2) deploy a decision support tool as part of a primary care bundle questionnaire, and 3) support patients in completing their preferred method of CRC screening.
This is a behavioral trial study to pilot test a stress management intervention for people with cancer who are undergoing routine cancer scans. The study will involve two pilot testing phases. Initial feasibility will be determined in an Open Trial phase, to inform any needed revisions to the intervention and/or protocol prior to a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial phase. The Open Trial phase is an unblinded, single-site, single-arm open trial (n=10). The Pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) phase is an unblinded, single-site, feasibility pilot randomized controlled trial (n=50).
The goals of this clinical trial are to evaluate DECIDES, a web-based decision support application that provides education about cancer and cancer treatment and provides support to encourage adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients, their caregivers, and oncology health care providers to make informed decisions about cancer treatment together. The main questions this study aims to answer are: * Is DECIDES acceptable, usable, and feasible for AYA, caregivers, and oncology health care providers? * Is DECIDES helpful for AYA, caregivers, and oncology health care providers that are making cancer treatment decisions together? AYA and caregiver participants will complete a questionnaire and be randomly assigned to participate in one of three groups: (1) Usual Care, (2) DECIDES, or (3) DECIDES+. Participants in 'Usual Care' will continue to have access to their oncology health care team for questions related to cancer and cancer treatment, as per usual standard of care. Participants in both 'DECIDES' and 'DECIDES+' groups will receive access to DECIDES, and those in 'DECIDES+' will receive additional live, coach-assisted support. After 8 weeks, AYA and caregivers will complete a follow-up questionnaire and those in the 'DECIDES' and 'DECIDES+' groups will complete a semi-structured qualitative interview. Oncology clinicians of participating AYA will be invited to participate in a semi-structured qualitative interview. Researchers will compare groups to see if AYA and caregivers that receive access to DECIDES (with an informational handout vs. coach-assisted support) report more positive decision-making processes compared to those that receive standard of care.
This clinical trial utilizes the Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model to recruit, train, and support community healthcare providers in cancer survivorship best practices. Cancer survivors have distinct medical needs and are more likely to report being in poor or fair overall health compared to those who do not report a history of cancer. There is a lack of educational opportunities focused on survivorship care for health providers. Although progress has been made with the development of survivorship guidelines, physicians continue to express barriers to addressing concerns of cancer survivors. This study is to utilize a Survivorship ECHO education intervention to assess its effects on provider knowledge and comfort with survivorship guidelines as well as greater adherence to guideline concordant breast cancer survivorship care recommendations.
The purpose of this investigation is to conduct a feasibility study to evaluate the potential for implementing the developed decision support tool with Latina, Black, and non-Latina White women. The investigators will collect feasibility data and assess the use of the decision support tool with end-users. The aim is to determine if women using the decision support tool make more informed choices measured by knowledge, attitudes, and intentions.
Our study will evaluate patient and caregiver use of a new mobile application (app) to support patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
