Two arm study, experimental and control, to explore the impact of an online training program to prepare community health workers (CHWs) conduct effective outreach to support African American and Latino male caregivers of older adults.
Much effort over the last several decades has been devoted to developing and implementing psychoeducational interventions for family caregiving partners for those with Alzheimer's and relatedm dementias (ADRD). However, few interventions address the specific needs of care partners for those with frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). This study tests an intervention to support family caregivers for those with FTD.
The goal of this project is to pilot test CHEC (Collaborative Healthcare Encounters with Caregivers) in primary care. CHEC is brief intervention with two components: 1) a checklist to identify the needs and concerns of unpaid/family caregivers who accompany older patients (aged 65+) to their primary care visits and 2) accompanying Tip Sheet for clinicians.
The purpose of the Daily Study of Caregiving Relationships and Health is to learn how caregiving relationships and social connectedness are associated with dementia caregivers' health, health behaviors, and diurnal patterns of salivary cortisol. This is a pilot study wherein the purpose is to test the feasibility and acceptability of study protocols.
The investigators will conduct a hybrid efficacy-effectiveness trial intended to address these gaps by testing the efficacy-effectiveness of two multi-family group interventions, and on 250 English-speaking adults: Savvy Caregiver Express™ (3-session, newly piloted in Los Angeles County for feasibility) and Savvy Caregiver Program (original 6-session evidenced-based intervention), across post-intervention, 3- and 6-months.
Although many older Chinese Americans are expected to need intensive care because of cognitive impairment, a large gap exists in development of culturally sensitive interventions to reduce stress among caregivers in Chinese American communities. This research project will develop and pilot test a culturally sensitive intervention, the peer mentoring program (PMP), which is informed by the sociocultural stress and coping model. This project will generate preliminary data for a larger randomized controlled trial for efficacy or effectiveness testing of PMP, which is an innovative intervention to support dementia among Chinese Americans, by empowering the existing human resources of experiential caregivers in the same ethnic community.
Latino families with dementia experience substantial disparities in access to caregiver support compared to their non-Latino white peers, putting them at an increased risk for negative emotional, physical and financial outcomes. This R21 will address this research gap by 1) Developing a culturally and linguistically appropriate text message intervention for caregiver support among Latino family caregivers of individuals with dementia and 2) Testing the feasibility and acceptability of CuidaTXT, a multicomponent text message caregiver support intervention culturally and linguistically tailored for the Latino community.
The purpose of the study is to examine the role of demographics, pre-existing anxiety, depression, and substance use on caregiver depression anxiety, and substance use following a critical injury to a loved one, evaluate the factors that mediate the effectiveness of traditional psychotherapy using problem solving therapy to reduce depression, anxiety, and substance use and to evaluate the factors that mediate the effectiveness of providing an ICU diary and instruction on that diary to reduce depression, anxiety, and substance use.
The investigators will recruit 60 family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment or dementia to participate in a pilot feasibility and acceptability trial of Mindfulness Coach, an mHealth mobile application that delivers mindfulness therapy. Mindfulness Coach is a self-guided mHealth intervention designed to help individuals learn MT, an evidence-based treatment to enhance health, wellness and mental health. The app also offers a library of information about MT (e.g., "how to anchor participants' attention"), 12 audio-guided mindfulness exercises, and a catalog of additional exercises available for free. In addition to collecting data about the feasibility and acceptability of Mindfulness Coach with caregivers of patients with dementia or cognitive impairment, the investigators will also collect data on preliminary efficacy of Mindfulness Coach at relieving symptoms of caregiver burden, anxiety, stress and depression.
The goal of this project is to implement and evaluate a novel intervention for low-income families to reduce the burden of caregivers of a child with asthma.
This research is being done to learn whether services to the caregiver to provide emotional, instrumental and social support can improve quality of life and other outcomes. The Caregiver-Support program provides services that are not usually available to caregivers of persons with heart failure and other chronic conditions.
Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) refers to a particular type of attention focused on the present moment, non-judgmental awareness, and acceptance of that experience with openness and curiosity. Mindfulness training was designed to enhance the range and use of coping skills, decrease levels of stress, improve mood, and reduce tendencies to react in maladaptive ways 1-3. Investigators are evaluating a new program, called the Mindfulness Based Dementia-Care (MBDC) in caregivers (CG) for dementia, which combines the traditional approaches with education. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the program and explore the potential benefits of the Mindfulness Based Dementia-Care (MBDC) program. Investigators are conducting a prospective, pre-post, observational study with members participating in the MBDC program.
The study goal is to develop a web-based system that uses distance education methods and provides manuals and protocols to train, certify, and monitor the performance of interventionists to deliver the Savvy Caregiver program (Savvy), an evidence-based dementia family caregiver psychoeducation program. The system has a potential to increase the scalability of Savvy.
The palliative care education in assisted living for dementia care providers (PCEAL-DCP) is a 4-week intervention (once a week for 1.5 hours, a total of 6 hours) for licensed nurses, administrators and dementia care coordinators to improve quality of dementia care outcomes
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the feasibility, accessibility, and potential clinical benefits of implementing a moderated online social media platform with therapeutic content, Altitudes, to parents, caregivers, and supporters of young people with psychosis across the state of North Carolina, including in Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) programs, Specialized Treatment Early in Psychosis (STEP) programs, and other community services where caregivers or supporters of young persons experiencing psychosis receive care. The investigators will evaluate acceptability and feasibility with up to 50 caregivers and supporters over the course of 6 months. Acceptability and usability will be assessed with various acceptability measures with the Altitudes caregivers and supporters, and caregivers and supporters' engagement with the digital platform. The investigators will additionally evaluate the impact of the platform on caregiver and supporter's psychological status, well-being, and social support, as measured via self-report questionnaires.
The purpose of this study is to develop and test CarePair, a mobile application-based needs assessment and service referral platform for family caregivers of persons with dementia designed to alleviate stress and promote psychosocial well being. The main aims of this study are: * To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the CarePair mobile application. * To explore the potential for CarePair to reduce feelings of depression and burden, and improve caregivers' feelings of self-efficacy. Caregiver participants will be asked to log in and use the CarePair application and complete study activities for a six-week duration. Researchers will compare the intervention group to an attention control comparator to see if application use is associated with improved psychosocial outcomes at follow-up.
Cancer has a psychological, emotional and social impact beyond a patient's physical health. This study examines three new online peer mental-wellness support program for cancer patients, survivors or their caregivers. Each program teaches evidence-based skills, in the context of that groups lived experience, to manage the emotional impact of cancer. This study examines the impact of that program.
Participants will complete 1 set of questionnaires about 2 weeks before beginning their Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy for Caregivers/MCP-C or standard Supportive Psychotherapy for Caregivers/SP-C sessions. These questionnaires will ask about participants' sense of meaning and purpose in life, spiritual well-being, depression and/or anxiety, and social support. Participants will then be assigned to receive either MCP-C or SP-C for 7 sessions. Participants will complete additional sets of questionnaires about 2 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months after their last session of MCP-C or SP-C. It will take between 35 and 50 minutes to complete each set of questionnaires. After participants complete the MCP-C or SP-C sessions and all 4 sets of questionnaires, their participation in this study will end. If participants decide not to complete all 7 sessions, they may still choose to complete the questionnaires. Participants may remain in the study and continue to receive all 7 sessions of MCP-C or SP-C even if their loved one passes away.
The objective of this study is to assess the acceptability and feasibility of Altitudes, a novel digital behavioral health and psychoeducational intervention for caregivers and supporters of individuals experiencing first episode psychosis. The investigators will evaluate acceptability and feasibility with up to 30 caregivers and supporters over the course of 6 months. Acceptability and usability will be assessed with various acceptability measures with the Altitudes caregivers and supporters, caregivers and supporters' engagement with the digital platform, and qualitative interviews with the Altitudes caregivers and supporters. The investigators will additional evaluate the impact of the platform on caregiver and supporter's psychological status, wellbeing, and social support, as measured via self-report questionnaires.
The TBI-AD/ADRD Caregiver Support Intervention (TACSI) incorporates psychosocial and psychoeducational approaches with the objective of: a) identifying stressors associated with caregiving for family members who have the dual diagnosis of traumatic brain injury and dementia; and b) supporting caregivers in developing more effective coping and communication strategies as well as enhanced caregiving self-efficacy.
Individuals with mild cognitive impairment are often physically inactive and at risk for progressing to dementia. Physical inactivity is considered a modifiable risk factor for dementia. Therefore, interventions must be developed to foster sustainable improvement in daily physical activity. To address this problem, our pilot study aims are directed at assessing the feasibility and preliminary improvement of physical activity following the use of a mobile-health technology physical activity behavior change intervention. Similar interventions have shown to be very effective in older adults without cognitive impairment. We specifically focus on the subtype of amnestic mild cognitive impairment since this subtype often progresses to Alzheimer's Disease, a leading cause of death in the US. Improving physical activity is one approach to reduce the progression to Alzheimer's Disease and subsequently lower mortality. To increase the impact of the intervention, participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment will be recruited along with a primary caregiver (dyads). Thirty dyads will be recruited and randomized to either an intervention group (15 dyads) or usual care group (15 dyads). The intervention group will receive a 12-week mobile-health technology physical activity behavior change intervention structured to improve physical activity. The intervention is unique in the combination of established behavior change theories and techniques and remote delivery for individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. This pilot study is designed to assess the feasibility of the intervention by examining participant and primary caregiver retention, intervention session attendance, intervention acceptability and safety, and qualitative perspectives. Secondly, this pilot study will assess preliminary improvement in physical activity (i.e., daily steps). Improvement will be determined based on significant changes in participants' daily steps observed via accelerometry post-intervention in the intervention group compared to the usual care control group. The results of this study will support future work (K-award and R01 submissions) to explore efficacy and larger-scale implementation to reach rural and underserved areas of Nebraska and beyond.
The overall objective of this study is to compare knowledge, decisional conflict, preferences, and caregiver burden over time caregivers of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) patients by comparing the effectiveness of a video decision aid intervention and enhanced usual care.
The purpose of this project is to test the impact of different forms of technology (virtual reality vs. video chat) on quality of life and family relationships in older adults who reside in senior living communities and an adult child who lives at a distance. The study will also investigate whether responses to the technology and quality of life outcomes depend on older adults' level of cognitive impairment.
Mindfulness is promising for individuals with neurological disorders and caregivers to improve psychological well-being. This study aims to determine the extent to which a 3-week online mindfulness intervention will improve quality of life and psychological well-being for chronic stroke survivors and their caregivers, compared to a waitlist control.
The WeCareAdvisor is an online tool to help caregivers manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of people living with dementia. The trial will evaluate its efficacy to reduce caregiver distress, improve confidence managing behaviors, as well as reduce occurrences and severity of behavioral and psychological symptoms. Aims: The study will contribute to our understanding of how the cultivation of caregiver mindfulness might improve their overall relational well-being (Primary Outcome), their psychological well-being (Secondary Outcome), and have an impact on dementia patients' lifestyles (Other Outcome). Overall, this study will investigate the idea that the fruits of mindfulness training can be leveraged by both the caregiver and the care-recipient, improving the quality of relationship by making their interactions more mutual, connected, empathic and positive. This study aims to additionally elucidate which facets of mindfulness account for caregiver's happiness and psychological well-being. Sample: In this study 40 dementia caregivers will be recruited to participate; 20 will be allocated to the clinical intervention group (i.e., adapted MBSR for caregivers) and 20 to the active control group. Data will be collected pre-post the start of intervention, and at a 3 month follow up. Future orientation: This study may contribute to evidence-based knowledge concerning the efficacy of mindfulness based interventions to support caregiver empowerment, via regaining relationship satisfaction and achieving greater equanimity in the face of stressors.
This study asks: "what behavioral strategies are needed to help socially disconnected Hispanic/Latino caregivers with significant barriers to increasing connectedness?" This study uses a mixed methods approach to adapt a brief behavioral intervention-Social Engage psychotherapy-for use with socially disconnected Hispanic/Latino caregivers. This study is a single-arm clinical trial of Social Engage psychotherapy. We propose to enroll 10 participants for up to 8 weekly individual Social Engage psychotherapy sessions, over up to 3 months. Subjects will be aged 40 and older, and be caregivers for a community-dwelling family member with ADRD, living with (or in close proximity to) the family member with dementia, experiencing elevated caregiving distress and social disconnectedness.
This proposed intervention centers on improving survivorship outcomes among African American and Latinx cancer survivor and caregiver dyads. As a result, there will be four major outcomes. First, as a result of partnership with minority social institutions (e.g. faith leaders), we will develop an in-depth culturally sensitive curriculum and survivorship care plan for Cancer Survivorship and Caregiver Leaders Aimed for Minority Populations (CSC LAMPs). Second, we will increase knowledge and skills by evaluating a comprehensive cancer survivorship training program designed for underserved health professional students. Third, the implementation of this program will improve survivorship outcomes among African American and Latinx cancer survivors with advanced stage cancer and their caregivers. Lastly, this study will build sustainability for underserved minorities with the training of 30 future healthcare providers as a valuable community resource for improving cancer survivorship outcomes. The long-term outcomes of the CSC LAMPs program will generate workforce capacity and diversity in cancer-based clinical practice, research, and community advocacy for underserved minority cancer survivors and caregivers.
Caregivers of adults with dementia report higher stress, including anxiety and depressive symptoms, burden, and existential suffering, than caregivers of people with other chronic diseases.
The purpose of this study is to test a revised psychoeducational intervention to help Care Partners for family members with dementia understand and reduce the distressing behaviors that come with progressive dementia. Tele-STELLA (Support via TEchnology: Living and Learning with Advancing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias) is a multicomponent videoconference-based intervention designed to facilitate effective management of behavioral and psychological symptoms common to the later stages of dementia. In the Tele-STELLA intervention, professionals ("Guides") meet with family members ("Care Partners") who care for persons with dementia. Working together, the Care Partners and Guides identify strategies to address upsetting behaviors. The goal of this intervention is to reduce upsetting behaviors and, thus, Care Partner burden.
