Combination Chemotherapy With or Without PSC 833, Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation, and/or Interleukin-2 in Treating Patients With Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Description

Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PSC 833 may increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy by making cancer cells more sensitive to the drugs. Combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. Interleukin-2 may stimulate a person's white blood cells to kill cancer cells. This randomized phase III trial is studying giving combination chemotherapy together with PSC 833 followed by a peripheral stem cell transplant with or without interleukin-2 to see how well it works compared to combination chemotherapy alone followed by a peripheral stem cell transplant with or without interleukin-2 in treating patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, and Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation in Treating Patients With Hematologic Cancer
Description

RATIONALE: Peripheral stem cell transplantation may be able to replace immune cells that were destroyed by the chemotherapy or radiation therapy used to kill tumor cells. Sometimes the transplanted cells are rejected by the body's normal tissues. Transplanting donated cells that have been treated with psoralen may prevent this from happening. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and psoralen-treated donor cells in treating patients who are undergoing peripheral stem cell transplantation for hematologic cancer.

Description

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow doctors to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy followed by melphalan and peripheral stem cell transplantation in treating children who have newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia that has not been treated previously.
