8 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
Approximately 15-20% of patients diagnosed with a concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have persistent symptoms that continue up to six months or longer. Typical problems identified by these patients include difficulty with memory, multi-tasking, the ability to complete tasks quickly, and higher executive functions (e.g., inhibition, initiation, insight, motivation) (Belanger \& Vanderploeg, 2005; Mott, McConnon, \& Rieger, 2012, Rabinowitz \& Levin, 2014). If these symptoms persist they can not only affect thinking, but also communication abilities (e.g., verbal and nonverbal interactions, reading, and writing) (ASHA, 2007). Therefore, it is hypothesized that screening measures that evaluate both thinking and communication can better identify individuals at-risk for persistent symptoms at two week and four weeks post-injury. Also, if cognitive-communication therapy was administered earlier post-injury, then outcomes related to return to daily activities, work, and/or the academic setting could possibly change. This study intends to investigate the use of cognitive and communication screening measures for the identification of persistent symptoms and the provision of early cognitive-communication therapy if problems persist.
Difficulties with speech and language are the first and most notable symptoms of primary progressive aphasia (PPA). While there is evidence that demonstrates positive effects of speech-language treatment for individuals with PPA who only speak one language (monolinguals), there is a significant need for investigating the effects of treatment that is optimized for bilingual speakers with PPA. This stage 2 efficacy clinical trial seeks to establish the effects of culturally and linguistically tailored speech-language interventions administered to bilingual individuals with PPA. The overall aim of the intervention component of this study is to establish the relationships between the bilingual experience (e.g., how often each language is used, how "strong" each language is) and treatment response of bilinguals with PPA. Specifically, the investigators will evaluate the benefits of tailored speech-language intervention administered in both languages to bilingual individuals with PPA (60 individuals will be recruited). The investigators will conduct an assessment before treatment, after treatment and at two follow-ups (6 and 12-months post-treatment) in both languages. When possible, a structural scan of the brain (magnetic resonance image) will be collected before treatment in order to identify if brain regions implicated in bilingualism are associated with response to treatment. In addition to the intervention described herein, 30 bilingual individuals with PPA will be recruited to complete behavioral cognitive-linguistic testing and will not receive intervention. Results will provide important knowledge about the neural mechanisms of language re-learning and will address how specific characteristics of bilingualism influence cognitive reserve and linguistic resilience in PPA.
This study will investigate the efficacy of the Flutemetamol (18F) Injection PET tracer in identifying abnormal (18F) flutemetamol uptake patterns which predict the conversion from aMCI to a b-amyloid associated clinically probable Alzheimer's disease.
The current study will examine the impact of frequent social interaction through communication technologies during COVID-19 pandemic in the cognitive status of socially-isolated older adults with and without cognitive impairment. Patients will take place in an experimental crossover study, participants will complete one month of an intervention and one month of as passive control. The goal of this study is to determine: A.) if frequent social interaction through ICT during COVID-19 pandemic will have a significant positive impact in cognitive performance on testing, and B.) how social isolation and cognitive status influence misconceptions around the current pandemic.
This study will evaluate the Pain Identification and Communication Toolkit (PICT), a multicomponent intervention for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). PICT provides training in observational pain assessment and coaching in effective pain communication techniques. It will recruit participants from programs of all-inclusive care for the elderly (PACE) and partnering health care clinics. The investigators hypothesize that PICT will help caregivers to recognize and communicate about pain in their care recipients.
The purpose of this clinical trial is to learn whether existing treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be improved. Two treatments for PTSD, cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE) will be studied. CPT and PE are effective treatments that are widely available, but interventions are needed to improve patient outcomes in these treatments. The investigators have developed an Adjunctive Writing intervention for Amplifying Response and Engagement (AWARE), which was designed using health communication strategies to enhance CPT and PE by improving communication between patients and therapists about patients' experiences in treatment. This research will investigate whether adding AWARE to CPT and PE will lead to better treatment outcomes compared to CPT and PE provided as usual without AWARE. AWARE includes a brief writing task asking patients about their experiences in treatment, as well as guided therapist responses to improve patient-therapist communication about patients' experiences in treatment. In the first phase of the study (case series phase), CPT or PE with AWARE will be provided to four adults with PTSD to pilot test adding AWARE to CPT and PE, seek patient and provider feedback, and refine AWARE. The first four participants who enroll will be part of the case series and will receive CPT or PE with AWARE. Then, in the second phase of the study, the randomized controlled trial (RCT) phase, the investigators will enroll 50 more adults with PTSD who will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to receive CPT/PE as usual or CPT/PE with AWARE. It is expected that 25 participants will be randomized to CPT/PE with AWARE and 25 participants will be randomized to receive CPT/PE provided as usual. The goals of the RCT phase are to study whether AWARE is acceptable to patients, whether it is feasible to add AWARE to CPT and PE, and whether adding AWARE to CPT and PE improves patient-therapist communication and treatment outcomes compared to CPT/PE as usual.
The purpose of this study is to design a Negotiation and Dispute Resolution (NDR) training intervention to improve communication and address resolution of conflicts that family caregivers of patients with cognitive impairment and/or Alzheimer's Disease (AD) frequently experience.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and preliminary efficacy of integrating targeted dosing of intranasal oxytocin with a social cognitive skills group therapy for school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
