Study Evaluating the Quality and Effects of Lion's Mane Product on Cognitive Health
Description

The rationale for this study is to observe differences in cognitive health outcomes such as short term memory and simple reaction time between a consumer-grade and commercially available Lion's mane mushroom product and a placebo control group. Additionally, the study aims to evaluate the impact of the product on cognitive function, mood, focus, motivation, sleep quality, and stress. A consumer-driven, decentralized observational clinical research study is therefore well-suited for evaluating the impact of this product in this population. The study will evaluate cognitive health outcomes in a broad age-range of adults who have chosen to try this product. The study will incorporate memory and cognitive function tests, participant reported outcome questionnaires and surveys. There is no "doctor-patient" relationship as part of this research since the participant as a consumer is making the informed choice to take the product and participate in the observational process with self-reported measures that can be done at home. Findings from this study will contribute knowledge toward the functional mushrooms and cognitive health and the design of future studies.

Mental and Cognitive Health and Physical Activity in the Perioperative Breast Cancer Setting
Description

This study evaluates the complex relationships between mental health, cognitive function, and physical activity before surgery in patients with stage I-III breast cancer. Most patients with breast cancer experience declines in their mental health, with up to two-thirds of patients reporting symptoms of depression and anxiety. Cancer-related cognitive decline is even more prevalent; 75% of patients with breast cancer report varying degree of loss in mental acuity throughout their cancer experience. Both mental and cognitive health declines are pervasive, lasting anywhere from 5 years to decades after treatment completion. Not only are these declines detrimental to patients' quality of life, but they also increase the risk of cancer-related mortality. Maintaining sufficient levels of physical activity (PA) is important to both prevent breast cancer and improve health post-diagnosis. PA improves anxiety and depressive symptoms during and after treatment. Early intervention with PA prior to or during cancer treatment, or prehabilitation, can avoid or reduce the severity of treatment-related side effects, hospital length of stay, surgical complications, and care costs. Information gained in this study may help researchers learn more about the right time during treatment for delivering lifestyle programs to improve mental and cognitive health.

A Study of Cognitive Health in Survivors of Prostate Cancer
Description

The purpose of this study is to collect information that may help the researchers understand the relationship between prostate cancer survivors' experiences of cancer-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD) and their other conditions (co-morbid factors), including anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The researchers will also find out how additional things may contribute to CRCD, including social factors, the characteristics of participants' prostate cancer, and the type of cancer treatment or other medications they received.

The primary objectives are to develop and validate a classifier using multimodal passive sensor data and metrics derived from normal iPhone and Apple Watch usage to distinguish individuals with normal cognition from those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to develop and validate a cognitive wellness score that tracks fluctuations in cognitive performance over time using multimodal passive sensor data and metrics derived from normal iPhone and Apple Watch usage.

A Physical Activity Intervention to Promote Cognitive Health, Cardiovascular Health and Sleep in Older Latinos
Description

This study is a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial that will test a multilevel intervention, Tiempo Juntos para la Salud, (Time Together for Health) designed to promote moderate-intensity physical activity; theoretically grounded mediators; and secondary outcomes of cardiovascular health, sleep and cognitive function. Participants will have 4 visits over a year long period. Data collection will occur at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months among 216 Spanish language-dominant Latinos aged 55 and older with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) \[Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score 23 to 26 for Latino populations\].

Project TEACH: The Eating, Affect, and Cognitive Health Study
Description

Specific aims are to: 1. Assess variability in performance on state-level measures of working memory (WM) delivered via Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). The investigators expect WM performance to vary over the course of a day across participants, and to be poorer and more variable among youth with overweight/obesity and loss of control (LOC) eating relative to overweight/obese and non-overweight controls. 2. Investigate the relationship between state WM and eating behavior. The investigators expect that poorer momentary WM will predict an increased likelihood of LOC eating as assessed via EMA, and greater energy intake and poorer dietary quality as assessed via dietary recall, across participants. The investigators expect these effects to be strongest among youth with concomitant overweight/obesity and LOC eating.

Aging and Cognitive Health Evaluation in Elders (ACHIEVE)
Description

The ACHIEVE study will be a randomized controlled trial nested within the infrastructure of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. We plan to enroll 850 70-84 year-old cognitively normal older adults with hearing loss, who will be randomized 1:1 to the hearing intervention (hearing needs assessment, fitting of hearing devices, education/counseling) or successful aging health education intervention (individual sessions with a health educator covering healthy aging topics). Post-baseline, participants will be followed semi-annually for 3 years.

Impact of Age on Cardiovascular, Cerebrovascular and Cognitive Health in Spinal Cord Injury
Description

As the spinal cord injured population ages, these individuals are being exposed to an increased prevalence of age-associated diseases, which coupled with the secondary complications of the injury may contribute to the reduced life expectancies. Decentralized autonomic regulation in persons with SCI results in a multitude of cardiovascular changes, which may contribute to accelerated aging. Adverse cardiovascular changes may have deleterious effects on cerebral blood flow dynamics and an increase in cerebral vascular resistance index in individuals with SCI during cognitive testing. Deficits in memory and processing speed in individuals with SCI may relate to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular dysfunction. Identifying the associations between healthy aging versus premature or accelerated aging in organ system function in the SCI population is an important first step towards prevention and amelioration of these changes. Therefore the study objectives are to compare, among individuals with SCI, age-matched non-SCI and older non-SCI individuals arterial stiffness and cerebral vascular resistance index; memory, processing speed, and executive function; and volume of white matter hyperintensities. 60 individuals with SCI, 30 age-matched non-SCI controls, and 20 older non-SCI controls will be recruited for this study. All potential subjects will undergo a two-part screening process which consists of an initial screening via telephone and a detailed, in-person screening. Eligible subjects will be invited to participate in a 4 hour laboratory visit during which their arterial stiffness, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate and, blood flow to the brain will be monitored at rest and during a comprehensive series of cognitive tests. A subset of the participants will be asked to take part in an MRI brain imaging session: 40 persons with SCI, 10 age-matched non-SCI and 10 older non-SCI. Eligible subjects will be asked to participate in a 1 hour MRI/functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) session. We hypothesize that arterial stiffness and cerebral vascular resistance index will be increased in the SCI group compared to the age-matched non-SCI but will be comparable to the older non-SCI groups. In addition, we hypothesize that the prevalence of mild to moderate cognitive impairments in memory, processing speed, and executive function will be increased in the SCI individuals compared to the age-matched non-SCI but will be comparable to the older non-SCI individuals.

Cybercycling for Cognitive Health
Description

Exercise has been linked to cognitive health, but few older adults exercise at recommended levels. Cybercycling may provide additional cognitive benefits due to increased motivation to ride the interactive 3D tours. Participants will be randomly assigned to three months of either cybercycling or traditional stationary biking; and they will complete comprehensive evaluations before and after exercise. Older adults are expected to show significant neuropsychological, physiological and behavioral gains.

Effects of a Synbiotic Supplement on Metabolic & Cognitive Outcomes Among Older Adults
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to investigate the effects of a prebiotic and probiotic supplement on metabolic, cognitive, and muscle health in older adults. Participants in the study will be older adults who will receive a prebiotic and probiotic supplement containing different strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus gasseri. The study will collect data at baseline and after 3 months of supplementation to compare the effects on metabolic, cognitive, and muscle health. Additionally, genetic variants associated with vitamin D deficiency and muscle phenotypes will be identified in this population.

Investigating the Effects of Beef Consumption on Cognitive and Brain Health
Description

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of beef consumption on cognitive and brain health in healthy young adults. Specifically, we seek to evaluate the effects of beef consumption on measures of executive function, memory, psychological well-being, and sleep quality. Additionally, we will explore the effects of increased beef consumption on measures of brain health derived from structural and functional brain imaging. All participants will take part in a 12-week dietary intervention study. Throughout the intervention, participants will receive 5 portions of ready-to-eat beef in frozen packages each week. Each serving of ready-to-eat beef for the experimental group will weigh 5-ounces, while each serving of ready-to-eat beef for the comparison group will weigh 1-ounce. Study compliance will be evaluated through weekly surveys about beef consumption. In addition to completing the dietary intervention, participants will complete pre- and post-intervention assessments: * MRI scan, including structural and functional brain imaging * a comprehensive questionnaire battery evaluating cognitive and psychological measures * neuropsychological tasks * a blood draw

This study will evaluate the efficacy of 1MD Nutrition's MindMD supplement in improving and maintaining cognitive function and memory. Evaluation of the Wits Workout Wellness Program for Older Adults
Description

About 11% of the U.S. older adult population is at risk for or suffers from subjective cognitive decline. While some factors such as genetics and habitual physiological changes that affect brain health cannot be changed, research has shown that lifestyle changes such as participation in regular physical activity, staying socially engaged, and managing stress and diet can help to delay or reduce cognitive decline. Yet few brain health promotion programs exist and those that do fail to focus on global health and wellness as a strategy to improve brain health. Wits Workout is a holistic, 12-session, 60-minute per session, multi-modal workshop series that offers adults ages 50 and older facilitated, interactive dialogue and activities about behaviors that promote brain health. Each week includes a different themed module which has four activities and a training component.
