Alleviation of Common Cold Symptoms
Description

Upper respiratory infections (URIs) have long posed a significant burden to the US healthcare system. Well before the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic they have been among the most common acute outpatient illnesses, causing 75-100 million physician visits each year on average, and costing the health care system billions of dollars annually. This double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study tested the efficacy of two anti-inflammatory throat sprays against placebo and against a throat spray taken in conjunction with 325mg of aspirin, a well-known systemically administered cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor. Participants having common cold symptoms lasting less than two days were enrolled and given treatment to administer at home. Various common cold symptoms were assessed and measured via clinically validated self-assessment scales. Participants were screened for influenza and COVID-19 before enrollment and were excluded if found positive.

RECRUITING
Beetroot Juice NO Cold Study
Description

Currently, there is a lack of evidence-based prevention strategies for respiratory infection and management of these conditions can be costly to the public. Airway nitric oxide provides a first line of defense against pathogens, and beetroot juice, a source of dietary nitrate, has been shown to elevate nitric oxide. The main objective of this project is to demonstrate that one week of supplementation with beetroot juice elevates airway nitric oxide during stressful periods in young adults and thereby can protect against respiratory viral infections.

Efficacy of a Whole Cell Algae Fermentate on Gut Health and Overall Immune Function in Healthy Adults With Mild Gastrointestinal Issues
Description

The objective of the current study is to evaluate the effect of whole cell fermentate on gut health, including GI system function, such as supporting consistency and regularity of bowel habits, as well as changes in microbiota. The role of the GI system can also be extended to immune regulation because approximately 70% of the entire immune system in the body is located around the gut. Thus, the health and wellbeing of the gut can have a great impact on whole-body health. Therefore, this study will assess the effect on overall immune function.

COMPLETED
Nitrate Supplementation During Final Examination Stress
Description

The purpose of the present study is to explore the effects of a dietary nitrate supplement on immunity, mood, cardiovascular activity, and lung function during and following final exam stress in both healthy and asthmatic individuals.

Mechanisms Underlying Asthma Exacerbations Prevented and Persistent With Immune-Based Therapy
Description

Asthma is a growing problem, especially in children. It causes frequent wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough. A cold that is caused by a virus (viral cold) can sometimes make asthma symptoms worse. This study will help investigators learn about the way colds are related to asthma attacks among children who need higher amounts of medications to control their asthma. Investigators want to learn why viral colds sometimes cause asthma attacks and other times do not by studying the immune system response in samples taken from the nose and blood.

Effect of Effect of a Medicated Topical Therapy , Petrolatum, and No Treatment on Nocturnal Cough
Description

This study seeks to subjectively evaluate whether a single application of Vicks® VapoRub® (VVR) ointment or a control ointment (petrolatum) will be superior to no treatment for control of nocturnal cough and congestion due to upper respiratory tract infection (URI) as rated by both parents and children.

COMPLETED
To Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of 1146A Nasal Spray in Adult Participants With Symptoms of Common Cold
Description

This study will be conducted in adult participants with symptoms of common cold assessing if 1146A nasal spray reduces the severity of symptoms of the common cold compared to placebo. The study will also evaluate the safety of 1146A compared to placebo.

Conditions
COMPLETED
An Observational Study to Evaluate The Relationship of Nasal Mucus Properties and Symptoms
Description

This is a study to learn more about the common cold from studying the nasal secretions produced during a cold or episode of allergic rhinitis.

COMPLETED
Efficacy and Safety of ACZ885 in Patients With the Following Cryopyrin-associated Periodic Syndromes: Familial Cold Autoinflammatory Syndrome, Muckle-Wells Syndrome, or Neonatal Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease
Description

This will provided long-term safety and efficacy data for ACZ885 (a fully human anti-interleukin-1β \[anti-IL-1β\] monoclonal antibody) given as an injection subcutaneously in patients who participated in the CACZ885A2102 (NCT00487708), CACZ885D2201 (NCT00685373) or CACZ885D2304(NCT00465985) studies or newly identified patients with the following cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes: Familial Cold Autoinflammatory Syndrome, Muckle-Wells Syndrome or Neonatal Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease. The duration of this study was 6 months with a maximum duration of 2 years
