9 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
This controlled feeding trial will identify biomarkers in the metabolome and microbiome that may differ when consuming a healthy diet with or without red and processed meat.
The goal of this controlled feeding trial is to learn about the metabolism of polyphenols, a common class of compounds found in plant-based foods, by the gut microbiome. It will evaluate how differences in gut bacteria across individuals influence metabolism of polyphenols from foods, which may influence health benefits that people receive from different foods.
Diabetes costs the U.S. healthcare system more than any other disease, and nearly half of Americans will develop either diabetes or prediabetes in their lifetime. It is therefore critical to find new strategies to treat or reverse diabetes. One such approach is adopting a healthy diet, which can dramatically improve blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and even induce diabetes remission. Despite this, not much is known about which food groups are most effective at improving blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes. Interestingly, of the various food groups, epidemiologic data suggests that whole fruit may be one of the most efficacious at both preventing type 2 diabetes and improving blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, few clinical trials have investigated the effects of whole fruit on blood sugar control. This study will therefore be the first to determine the effects of increasing whole fruit as a food group in type 2 diabetes patients. This supervised controlled feeding trial will test whether consuming a diet rich in whole fruit for 12 weeks can improve glycemic control and cardiometabolic health in weight-stable adults with type 2 diabetes. The primary endpoint is glycemic control. Since changes in medication doses can skew the interpretation of glycemic outcomes, glycemic control will be assessed hierarchically (in descending order of importance) using (a) attainment of nondiabetic glycemia without medications (as a proxy for diabetes remission), (b) medication effect scores, (c) mean glucose during an oral glucose tolerance test, and (d) 24-hour mean glucose from continuous glucose monitoring. As secondary aims, this study will also test whether consuming a large amount of fructose in whole food form affects liver fat, pancreatic fat, and cardiovascular disease risk factors.
The purpose of this study is to determine if postpyloric feedings effectively improve objective measures of pulmonary health in preterm infants with chronic lung disease when compared with nasogastric (NG) feedings. This research will (1) determine the optimal nutritional management to prevent a common and costly complication of prematurity, and (2) use a novel crossover design that examines outcomes of clinical endpoints alongside biomarkers.
This is a study of the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) in the exploration of effective strategies for Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF) prevention.
The Seattle Dietary Biomarker Development Center (S-DBDC) aims to advance the science of measuring dietary intake by identification and validation of dietary biomarkers that improve upon self-reported diet. To accomplish this mission, the Seattle DBDC will carry out controlled feeding studies in healthy human volunteers. Metabolomics assays will be conducted on blood and urine specimens collected during the feeding studies for biomarker identification. Stool samples will be collected and archived.
The primary hypothesis is that preterm infants who are less than or equal to 32 weeks gestation and weigh 1001-2500 grams at birth will have an increase in weight gain with a feeding goal of 180-200 ml/kg/day more than the commonly used feeding goal of 140-160 ml/kg/day
This is a multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial. The primary focus of the study is the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment with megestrol as part of a 24 week behavioral feeding protocol in transitioning from tube to oral feedings in a pediatric population. Approximately 60 pediatric subjects matching the criteria for eligibility will be enrolled in the study and randomized to receive either megestrol (n=30) or placebo (n=30).
The purpose of this study is to modify the food culture of the fire service by motivating firefighters and their families to incorporate Mediterranean diet principles at work and home through behavior change strategies that involve education, participation and incentives. The ultimate purpose is to lower firefighters' risks for CVD and cancer by successfully getting more firefighters and their families to adopt and incorporate the healthy eating principles behind the Mediterranean diet.
