The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if the drug Nitrofurantoin (NF) taken as a daily antibiotic, works to treat cystitis compared to electrofulguration (EF) and Nitrofurantoin (NF) daily antibiotic.

Preventing Recurrent UTI With Vaginal Estrogen
Description

Among postmenopausal women who suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), vaginal estrogen therapy prevents UTI recurrences for 50% of sufferers. This research will investigate why some women benefit but others do not, focusing on (a) the effects of vaginal estrogen therapy on the bacteria that inhabit the vagina and bladder, (b) its influence on immune responses in both compartments, and (c) the extent to which those changes are critical to successful UTI prevention. The findings will be a first step in the development of more effective strategies to prevent UTI, one of the most common and costly benign urologic conditions.

Intravaginal LACTIN-V for Prevention of Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection
Description

Recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIS) continue to be a major health problem in women and are now complicated by increasing antibiotic resistance. New preventive approaches are needed. Because most women with RUTI lack the normal protective Lactobacillus (LB) in their vaginal flora, we hypothesized that restoration of LB would reduce RUTIS. In this trail, women with recent UTI are randomized to receive either LB or placebo vaginal capsules and are followed for side effects, for colonization with LB and for occurrence of RUTI over hte next four months.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Inflammatory Conditions of the Urinary Bladder
Description

Pilot study to determine feasibility for treating patients with two chronic inflammatory conditions of the urinary bladder: chronic interstitial cystitis and recurrent urinary tract infections using a standardized hyperbaric oxygen treatment plan. Presently there are no good treatments for these conditions and hyperbaric oxygen may be a safe and readily accessible therapy as it has proven successful an another type of chronic inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder known as "radiation cystitis". The study will determine if patients will consider this an acceptable treatment for their conditions and that it is well tolerated.
