This study evaluates the effectiveness of the MEB-001 device in assessing physiological parameters that provide a clinically significant depressive burden screener. This study uses objective physiological markers from MEB-001 to estimate the clinically significant depressive burden as subjectively reported by the subject with the Beck Depression Inventory - II (BDI-II).
The purpose of this study is to better understand how low-level light therapy (LLLT) can be used to augment the antidepressant effects of Deprexis, an internet-based treatment program for depression, for participants with current major depressive disorder. The researchers will administer active and placebo LLLT to the right forehead of participants who show an improvement of at least 10% in depressive symptoms from baseline after two weeks of Deprexis treatment. Hypothesis: Participants who receive active LLLT will show a greater reduction of depressive symptoms than participants who receive placebo LLLT.
This two phase study is testing an online version of a transdiagnostic, cognitive behavioral therapy, against a modified version of that therapy emphasizing positive affect. The first phase of the trial will focus on content development for the modified therapy and the second phase will be a randomized control trial comparing the two.
Individuals with heart disease and depressive symptoms suffer from higher death rates, higher rates of acute cardiac events (such as heart attacks), and faster progression of heart disease compared to those with heart disease who do not have depressive symptoms, and these problems are much worse in rural people. Unfortunately, rural people with heart disease and depressive symptoms do not receive needed therapy for depressive symptoms because of lack of mental health providers in rural areas, worries about stigma, and difficulty accessing mental health care because of multiple barriers to traveling to get care. To overcome these barriers, the investigators will compare the impact of two types of online cognitive behavioral therapy (video-conferenced face-to-face versus self-administered internet-based) and usual care on depressive symptoms to provide patients and healthcare providers with needed information about which is more effective and to increase the number of patients adequately treated.
The purpose of this study is to understand the effectiveness of a ten-week internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) treatment on improving depressive symptoms, coping and resilience skills, and cognitive processing.
The primary aims of this study are to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and tolerability of using an immersive extended reality (XR) headset to engage in behavioral activation (BA) for individuals diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD). The secondary aim of this study is to explore the efficacy of using XR to enhance BA therapy in a clinical MDD population.
The primary purpose of this study is to test the safety and feasibility of virtual reality (VR) technology in the use of behavioral activation (BA) as a treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). The secondary purpose of this study is to examine whether any evidence of clinical efficacy exists for VR delivered BA.
American Indians (AIs) living in the Northwest have very high rates of diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, depression, and other risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. Depression and diabetes have a pernicious effect on CVD risk and susceptibility. This study seeks to build upon the success of the 1-month, 5-session motivational interviewing (MI) CVD prevention component of the həli?dxw Project (aka Healthy Hearts-originally funded under RFA-HL-06-002; U01 HL HL087322-05). həli?dxw successfully culturally adapted MI for CVD prevention for AIs, trained AIs to implement the intervention, and conducted a preliminary feasibility and efficacy trial. Initial results indicated that participants enthusiastically embraced the MI component of the program; however, observations of the counselors, survey data, and feedback from participants suggest that depressive symptomatology served as a barrier to achieving CVD preventive behaviors and desired outcomes; and, that more time and attention to underlying depressive symptomatology may enhance motivation and CVD prevention behaviors, particularly among AIs with pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Building upon solid preliminary CVD epidemiological data, preliminary acceptability and feasibility of utilizing an MI approach, and motivated by the need to address elevated depression and diabetes profiles from the həli?dxw study, the investigators will develop a 3-month, 10-session MI-based cognitive-behavioral-adherence (MI-CBT-CVD) treatment program to address underlying depressive symptomatology, activate CVD prevention behaviors, and decrease BMI and CVD risk behaviors among 50 pre-and recently diagnosed diabetic AIs at risk for CVD. The study proposes three innovative and significant aims. First, in line with community-based participatory (CBPR) principles and pre-established indigenous research protocols with the tribal community, the investigators will conduct formative research to develop the MI-CBT-CVD intervention. Second, the investigators will conduct a pilot randomized two-group, single-site waitlist-controlled clinical trial of a 10-session, 3-month MI-based cognitive-behavioral treatment for CVD prevention (MI-CBT-CVD) among 50 pre-and recently diagnosed diabetic AI adults with depressive symptomatology and who are also at risk for CVD. Assessments will be conducted at pre and post intervention and at 6-months (3 month follow-up). Third, the investigators will disseminate the findings to the tribe as well as research outlets and prepare an RO1 to conduct a full-scale RCT should the pilot intervention be efficacious, acceptable to the community, and feasible. The primary objectives will be to determine the effect of the proposed culturally-grounded behavioral intervention program on (a) reducing weight as measured by BMI (7-10% reduction in BMI); (b) decreasing depressive symptomatology; (c) increasing physical activity; (d) decreasing sedentary activities; (d) increasing healthful food habits; and (e) improving biomedical outcomes (e.g., blood lipid profiles, glucose, hemoglobin A1C, and blood pressure). The intervention will be culturally relevant and utilize existing Native resources and personnel wherever possible.
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an electronic cognitive behavioral therapy application (eCBT Mood) compared to a control group consisting of a mood monitoring handheld computer application in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate major depressive disorder.
This project assesses the clinical and cost effectiveness of brief cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for depressed (ages 11-17) and anxious (ages 8-17) youths seen for services in pediatric primary care. This study is designed to compare the impact of brief CBT delivered on-site in pediatric primary care to referral to specialty mental health care (SMHC), as well as obtain an estimate of the total costs of the CBT protocols for depression and anxiety and the cost-effectiveness of the protocols compared to referral to and utilization of SMHC services.
Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, are difficult to treat. One reason is that there are no objective ways to measure how these disorders affect the body and respond to different treatments. In this study, researchers want to perform tests on people undergoing clinical care for mood disorders. The purpose is to understand the experience of receiving treatment for depression, bipolar disorder, and suicide risk. We also hope that this study will help us to predict which medications will improve thoughts of suicide. People 18 years or older who are receiving treatment for depression, bipolar disorder, or suicide risk may take part in this study. Participants must have also been enrolled in protocol 01-M-0254. This study will be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. The study typically lasts up to 12 weeks, but may last longer if a participant s treatment continues past that time. Participants will have weekly interviews and questionnaires while they are being treated for their mood disorder. Other tests are optional and include psychological testing, blood draws, sleep tests, and imaging scans. These will be done at the start and the end of research participation.
This study will test a new cognitive-behavioral skills training program (CBI) delivered in the metaverse. Although initial evidence suggested CBI was feasible for individuals experiencing depression or anxiety, CBI's effectiveness compared to no intervention has yet to be determined. The intervention may be delivered through virtual reality as well as flat-screen devices, such as a computer, which may also affect CBI's effectiveness. The study will enroll up to 306 participants with depression. One third of the participants will access CBI through virtual reality, one third of the participants will access CBI through a flat-screen device, and one third of the participants will be asked not to attend CBI sessions for the first 8 weeks of participation of the trial. For both CBI conditions, treatment will be provided over 8 weeks, with a 6-month follow-up period. Enrollment will be ongoing and groups will occur simultaneously. Potential participants are asked to complete an initial screening and an intake evaluation to determine eligibility. They will then receive 8-weeks of treatment. Participants will complete brief weekly self-report questionnaires throughout their time in the study.
The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an behavioral activation intervention to increase meaningful activity and community participation for people with serious mental illness. The overall objective of this study is to increase engagement in meaningful activities and community participation. The objectives of the project are as follows: 1. To determine if the intervention leads to increases the frequency and variety of activities. 2. To determine if the intervention leads to increases in community mobility. 3. To determine which demographic and environmental factors and mechanisms of action impact the effectiveness of the intervention. 4. To determine if the the intervention leads to an improvement in overall well-being (e.g., improved quality of life). Participants will be asked to attend a 2-hour weekly online session for 10 weeks and then a 1-hour online monthly session for a 3 month maintenance period. For data collection, participants will also be asked to: 1. Complete three, approximately 1-hour interviews at baseline, after the 10 week intervention, and again at the end of the maintenance period; 2. Carry a mobile phone with a global positioning system app to track their movements outside their home for 2 weeks at a time, at three separate times (e.g., baseline, after the intervention, and at the end of the maintenance period); and 3. Complete a 15 minute weekly interviews for 26 weeks about their daily activities and participation. The study will enroll 52 participants split into 4 cohorts of 13. The study will use a multiple baseline design and, as such, all participants will receive the intervention and there is no control group.
Optimizing treatments in mental health requires an easy to obtain, continuous, and objective measure of internal mood. Unfortunately, current standard-of-care clinical scales are sparsely sampled, subject to recency bias, underutilized, and are not validated for acute mood monitoring. The recent shift to remote care also requires novel methods to measure internal mood. Recent advances in computer vision have allowed the accurate quantification of observable speech patterns and facial representations. The continuous and objective nature of these audio-facial behavioral outputs also enable the study of their neural correlates. Here, the investigators hypothesize that video-derived audio-facial behaviors have discrete neural representations in the limbic network and can provide a critical set of reliable longitudinal estimates of mood at low cost across home and clinic settings.
We aim to investigate here whether we can develop a reinforcement learning game which provides game-based feedback to encourage positive actions (behaviors) both inside and outside of the game. Does providing positive reward when participants make decisions which are associated with value-based actions (like those in BA) result in different game decisions? We propose that it will increase positive actions in the game. And, secondly, how does it affect short-term behavior (in one week)? We propose that it will increase pro-health activities and may reduce depressive symptoms.
Many people know that a poor diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol use cause heart disease. However, a less known factor that increases the risk of heart disease is depression. In addition, heart disease can also make depression worse. Almost half of American adults have some form of heart disease. Patients with low income are at an even greater risk. The circular relation between depression and heart disease raises the question of whether or not there are factors that lead to both. Attacking a factor that affects both depression and heart disease could help prevent them both. One such factor is rumination which is when someone tends to have repeated negative thoughts that loop without end. This loop in turn tears and wears down the body over time, making the person be at risk for heart disease and depression. Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (RFCBT) is a tool that targets rumination and, by doing so, reduces the risk for depression. While research has shown RFCBT helps to reduce or stop the loop that leads to depression, this project will further look at the effect of RFCBT on measures of heart health persons with low income.
This is a cross-sectional pilot study designed to establish hot and cold cognitive functions and underlying neurocircuitry in older adults with MDD. The investigators will study 120 participants aged 21-80 years old with MDD. All participants will undergo clinical and neurocognitive assessment, and Magnetoencephalography (MEG)/Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures at one time point. The investigators will also enroll 120 demographically matched comparable, never-depressed healthy participants (controls) to establish cognitive benchmarks. Healthy controls will complete clinical and neurocognitive measures at one time point. To attain a balanced sample of adults across the lifespan, the investigators will enroll participants such that each age epoch (e.g., 21-30, 31-40, etc.) has a total of ten subjects (n=10) in both the healthy control cohort and depressed cohort.
Investigating whether delta-beta cross-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation can augment the effects of a single session of behavioral activation in participants with major depressive disorder.
The investigators are doing this study to learn more about how to prevent type 2 diabetes in teenage girls. The purpose of this study is to find out if taking part in a cognitive-behavioral therapy group, exercise training group, or a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and exercise training groups, decreases stress, improves mood, increases physical activity and physical fitness, and decreases insulin resistance among teenagers at risk for diabetes.
This is a phase 2, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm trial to assess the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of centanafadine once-daily (QD) extended-release (XR) capsules for the treatment of adult subjects diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The trial will evaluate the efficacy and safety of centanafadine QD XR capsules as monotherapy or as adjunct to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), escitalopram.
This is a single group study of a novel internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy program for older adults with elevated depressive symptoms. This study will enroll approximately 300 older adults throughout the state of Michigan to test the effectiveness of Empower@Home with older adults. The intervention will take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Participants will have lower levels of depression after completing the intervention than before enrollment. Participants will be able to use the internet-based platform with minimal support.
Native Americans (NA) are at greater risk for anxiety and depression early in life. This is concerning given potential negative effects of these conditions across the lifespan (substance use, suicide). Available culturally adapted prevention and early interventions (PEIs) for anxiety and depression in NA youth are limited. Thus, there is a critical need for the development and evaluation of a culturally consonant, brief PEI for anxiety and depression in NA youth. The investigators' short-term goal is to provide the community with a potentially successful PEI to mitigate NA youth's anxiety and depression that integrates culture and traditions for delivery in schools. The Specific Aims of the proposed research are to 1) culturally adapt COMPASS for Courage for NA youth living on a Northern Plains tribal reservation (chosen by the Cultural Advisory Board; CAB), 2) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the culturally-adapted COMPASS with NA youth living on the reservation, and 3) estimate effect size changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms of the culturally adapted COMPASS with the NA youth. The investigators propose to build upon the investigators' strong community relationships and CBPR methods to achieve these aims. The investigators will partner with the CAB to culturally adapt COMPASS for NA youth in year 1 within a CBPR framework, including NA youth and parents. In year 2, the investigators will train three NA providers from the tribal community and pilot test the adapted PEI among 30 NA 8-12-year-olds in two schools serving youth from the reservation in Years 2 and 3. The investigators will evaluate feasibility and acceptability using mixed methods including focus groups of key stakeholders (youth, parents, and teachers) and estimate effect sizes of changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms using a pre-post, single group design. The investigators hypothesize NA youth will find the adapted COMPASS intervention to be acceptable, enjoyable, and culturally appropriate and there will be pre- to post-intervention reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms. The long-term goal is to continue refining and tailoring the adapted COMPASS intervention and evaluate its efficacy and sustainability in the tribal community.
The present study aims to adapt and evaluate the feasibility of the BeatIt behavioral activation intervention for people with intellectual disabilities and low mood to be implemented with autistic individuals, with and without intellectual disabilities.
The study team will conduct a Multisite Randomized Controlled Trial to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of two approaches for quitting smoking among people with serious mental illness (SMI). The study will compare a novel app tailored to people with SMI, Quit on the Go, to a standard of care smoking cessation intervention. We will test the effectiveness of the Quit on the Go app, an intervention that has demonstrated feasibility and acceptability in the target population, as a tool for smoking cessation in people with SMI. Participants with SMI will be recruited across 3 sites (Duke University, Univ. at Buffalo, and Wake Forest University).
This is a pilot study of acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a brief, 10-session Behavioral Activation intervention delivered via teletherapy to increase physical activity and treat depressive symptoms.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of SLS-002 (intranasal racemic ketamine) in addition to standard of care on symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and suicidality, in participants who are assessed to be at imminent risk for suicide, as measured by the change from baseline on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total score at 24 hours post first dose.
This is a retrospective registration. The study was conducted at The Ohio State University from 2011 to 2012. This study was approved by an Institutional Review Board at The Ohio State University. The investigators retroactively registered this trial to facilitate publishing results in journal that now require registration. Any reference to the study's registration will make it clear that the registration was retroactive. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression. However, a substantial number of patients do not respond to treatment or continue to be symptomatic at its conclusion. An important goal of ongoing research is to find ways to enhance treatment outcomes. One approach to doing this is to modifying existing treatments to individualize the approach to better meet the needs of individual patients. In this study, the investigators tested two main components of CBT to empirically evaluate patient characteristics that may predict differential response to these components. By using components of CBT, any suggestions about the strategies that are best suited to different patients are likely be easily implemented by therapists providing CBT. The two treatment components the investigators examined were: cognitive interventions (e.g., challenging negative automatic thoughts) and behavioral interventions (e.g., engaging in activities to promote a sense of pleasure or accomplishment). The investigators recruited adults with major depressive disorder and randomized them to a cognitive or behavioral intervention. After 8 weeks of treatment, patients were randomized again to a cognitive or behavioral intervention. Consequently, participants were offered a total of 16 weeks of treatment. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD), with the latter being the primary outcome measure. Several variables that might serve to predict differential response to cognitive and behavioral treatments were also assessed. The results of this study may help to elucidate how cognitive or behavioral interventions might be selected so as to enhance overall treatment outcomes.
The overarching goal of the present study is to evaluate the effect of a subanesthetic dose of ketamine 24-hour post-injection on resting state functional connectivity, cognitive control, and reward learning.
Major depression (MD) in youth is a serious psychiatric illness with extensive morbidity and mortality. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released practice guidelines promoting primary care (PC)-based youth MD screening; however, even when diagnosed by PC providers, \<50% of youth with MD access treatment. Thus, a need exists for interventions that are feasible for youths and parents to access and complete-and that may strengthen parents' likelihood of pursuing longer-term services. Single-session interventions (SSIs) may help forward these goals. SSIs include elements of comprehensive treatments, but their brevity makes them easier to disseminate at scale. Meta-analytic evidence suggests SSIs can reduce youth psychopathology, including self-administered (e.g., online) SSIs. One computer-based SSI, teaching growth mindset (GM; viewing personal traits as malleable), has reduced adolescent depressive symptoms in multiple RCTs. A second computer-based SSI was recently developed to reduce youth depressive symptoms via targeting reductions in self-hate-a symptom identified as important for the maintenance of other depressive symptoms in teenagers. This study will test whether either the growth mindset SSI (GM-SSI), the self-kindness SSI (SK-SSI), or both SSIs reduce symptoms of depression in adolescents, relative to an active "supportive therapy" SSI, which teaches adolescents to share their emotions with trusted others. Youths participating in existing research through the Healthy Brain Network (N=501) will receive either the growth mindset SSI (GM-SSI), the self-kindness SSI (SK-SSI), or the supportive therapy SSI (ST-SSI). The investigators will examine whether the GM-SSI and/or the SK-SSI, versus the ST-SSI will reduce youth depressive symptoms across three months. Results may identify two novel, potent, and brief interventions for adolescent depressive symptoms.
The purpose of this study is to determine differences between the immune responses in healthy and depressed people. Participants will receive the influenza vaccine and their responses will be monitored. This study will recruit 15 healthy and 60 depressed participants.
