The Diabetes Body Project (DBP), is an adaptation of the Body Project which is the only eating disorder prevention program to have repeatedly produced effects when evaluated by independent researchers, produced stronger effects than credible alternative interventions, and affected objective outcomes. DBP has been adapted slightly for individuals with T1D who are at ultra-high risk for eating disorders. The study aims to test the effectiveness of the DBP of reducing body image concerns and reducing eating pathology and improving glycemic control.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary evidence of potential efficacy of a social-media based intervention to reduce risk factors for eating disorders in college women.
This proposed pilot study will evaluate whether this body acceptance class produces greater reductions in eating disorder risk factor symptoms (pursuit of the thin ideal, body dissatisfaction, dieting, dietary restraint and negative affect), eating disorder symptoms, and future onset of eating disorders over 6-month follow-up in this population.
Five percent of young women meet criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder, with another 5% meeting criteria for Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (ED-NOS), which includes subthreshold variants of these disorders. Over half of those presenting for eating disorder treatment meet criteria for ED-NOS and both threshold cases and ED-NOS are marked by chronicity, relapse, distress, functional impairment, and increased risk for future obesity, depression, suicide attempts, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, morbidity, and mortality. Anorexia and bulimia nervosa show stronger relations to suicide attempts, outpatient/inpatient treatment, and functional impairment than most other psychiatric disorders. Treatment of eating disorders is very expensive, similar to the cost for schizophrenia treatment, and is effective for only 40-60% of patients. Thus, a public health priority is to develop and disseminate effective eating disorder prevention programs.
This three-site effectiveness trial will test whether a brief dissonance-based eating disorder prevention program produces intervention effects when college counselors, psychologists, and nurses are responsible for participant recruitment, screening, and intervention delivery under ecologically valid conditions.

This randomized-controlled trial examines an online dissonance-based body image program for college students called the EVERYbody Project-Connect. The online (videoconferencing) intervention will be delivered using expert peer leaders in three 90-minute weekly sessions. Expert peer leaders for the EVERYbody Project-Connect are college students with lived and/or academic expertise within both body image and diversity and equity domains who are trained and screened for facilitation readiness. The comparison intervention is a passive, time-matched self-help condition using The Body Is Not An Apology Workbook by Sonya Renee Taylor. Both interventions explore diversity and representation within sociocultural body image pressures and provide tools for body acceptance. The study is open to all college students in a universal prevention and risk factor reduction framework. Outcomes will be assessed before and after the three weeks of intervention and at three-month follow-up.
This study will evaluate the impact of a program (called mind. body. voice. or "mbv") that was collaboratively designed by youth, educators, and researchers, informed by the Body Project (Becker et al., 2013; Stice et al., 2019), Youth Participatory Action Research, an extended co-design process, and previous iterations of the mbv program. The study evaluates the impact of the mbv program on key aspects of mental health and well-being; specifically, body image and disordered eating symptoms, identity and agency, social and self-constructs, physical health and mood at three time points over the course of the 10-week program, which will be offered remotely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be recruited from high schools and will be randomized to receive the mbv program or an assessment-only control group.

Given the cost of treating eating disorders and the substantial morbidity and mortality associated with these disorders, prevention of eating disorders has considerable public health significance. Female athletes represent an important population for prevention due to their risk for the Female Athlete Triad, which includes inadequate energy intake, irregular or cessation of menses, and osteoporosis. The proposed randomized controlled trial will provide important information regarding the efficacy, acceptability, and feasibility of implementing a brief eating disorder prevention and healthy living program within an existing social system of female athletes.
The purpose of this proposal is to launch the first trial of a single-session intervention (SSI) specifically for the prevention of eating disorders (EDs).
Parents with eating disorders exhibit greater concerns and dilemmas about developing healthy habits in their children. Studies indicate that the offspring of parents with eating disorders have more developmental and interpersonal difficulties. Consequently, these parents should receive personalized care to enhance their parental capacity and support them in their decision making process. The Parent-Based Prevention of Eating Disorders (PBP) is a promising intervention that may help improve feeding and eating practices and children outcomes, by engaging both parents in a short-term program. This study aims to empirically evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of PBP over a wait-list control group (i.e., treatment-as-usual) in a Randomized Case Series Trial.
This 2-site effectiveness trial will test whether a brief dissonance-based obesity prevention program delivered in single sex groups combined with food response and attention training will produce significantly larger weight gain prevention effects than an educational video control condition. An effectiveness trial is important to test whether this program reduces risk for unhealthy weight gain when delivered by real world clinicians under ecologically valid conditions, which is an important step toward broad implementation. A secondary aim focuses on eating disorder symptom prevention effects. A sample of 17-20 year olds with weight concerns (N = 120) will be randomized to single sex Project Health groups with food response and attention training or an educational video control condition. Participants will complete assessments at baseline, posttest, and 6- and 12-month follow ups.
FED-F is a modular treatment that enhances exposure therapy with psychoeducation and cognitive skills teaching how to face fears of (a) food, (b) weight gain, (c) interoception/body, and (d) social situations. The study goals are to (1) refine and test the acceptability and feasibility of FED-F treatment (Phase I), (2) test if this treatment outperforms treatment as usual (TAU) delivered post-acute treatment as adjunctive to stepdown specialty care (Phase II), and (3) to examine if treatment targets the hypothesized mechanism of action: approach behaviors (Phase II). These goals will lead to a highly deployable and accessible virtual treatment targeted at core AN mechanisms that predict relapse. Specific aims are to (1) refine FED-F into a fully virtual format with input from patients and stakeholders and collect preliminary data (N=10) on its feasibility and acceptability (Phase I), (2) conduct a small pilot RCT (randomized controlled trial) of FED-F (n=30) as compared to TAU (n=30; Phase II), and (3) examine if FED-F targets approach/avoidance behaviors and test if this mechanism is associated with clinical outcomes (Phase II).
This is an interventional study that will test the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of the Metabolic Diet, which was designed as a treatment for women with anorexia nervosa to remain weight-stable after they have been restored from low weight. Participants will be adult women with anorexia nervosa who have been recently restored to normal weight and adult women with no history of eating disorders. After enrollment, participants will start meeting weekly with a registered dietitian to implement the Metabolic Diet in their daily lives, and will receive medical monitoring for adherence, side effects, changes in metabolic or psychological parameters, and weight stability.
The purpose of this study is to collect preliminary data on the feasibility and acceptability of the randomization of two relapse-prevention treatment conditions after discharge from intensive eating disorder (ED) treatment: an imaginal exposure therapy and a writing and thinking intervention. The second aim to test for (a) differences between the two treatments for the prevention of relapse and (b) preliminary change on clinical ED outcomes (e.g., ED symptoms, fears). The investigators further aim to examine the two treatments target fear extinction and if fear extinction is associated with ED outcomes. The investigators also plan to test if baseline differences in fear conditioning relate to change in ED outcomes across treatment.
This project will evaluate 3 approaches of implementation support for university peer leaders who will deliver a prevention program with a particularly strong evidence-base compared to changes observed in outcomes in response to usual care at the universities before implementation. This study aims to advance knowledge of this innovative and economical way to provide college prevention programs to reduce the burden of mental illness in the college student population.
The prevalence of overweight among adolescents (BMI-for-age %tile over the 95th percentile) has more than tripled over the past 3 decades in the US. Overweight and physical inactivity disproportionately affect low- income, female, African American adolescents. A prior health-promotion/ obesity-prevention program for adolescents developed and tested by our group (Challenge!) showed that adolescents who received the intervention were less likely to become overweight or obese over 2 years when compared to the control group. This intervention was administered one-on-one to adolescents in their homes or community by a college-aged mentor. Schools are an ideal setting for interventions because the effect can be far-reaching and sustainable. School-based obesity-prevention interventions have thus far shown modest results. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of a multilevel intervention that includes both the Challenge program administered in a small group format after school using mentors and teachers and a school-wide environmental change on adolescent females' body composition, diet, and physical activity. The intervention is targeted to 6th and 7th grade female students. The small group intervention is conducted over 12 weeks and includes goal setting focusing on healthy diet and physical activity, along with membership and weekly trips to the YMCA. The environmental intervention includes a Health and Activity Committee (HAC), comprised of 8th grade female students (popular opinion leaders), school personnel, parents, and community members. The HAC develops school-wide health promotion messages and activities. Parents of participating 6th and 7th grade girls provide information on family variables. The hypotheses are that females who receive the small group or environmental intervention are at less risk of weight gain (overweight) than females in the control small group condition, that females in environmental schools are at less risk of weight gain (overweight) than females in the control environmental condition, and that females who receive both the small group and environmental intervention are at the lower risk of weight gain (overweight) than females who receive only the environmental or small group intervention or neither intervention.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the acceptability and efficacy of a cognitive dissonance-based (DB) intervention in reducing eating disorder and muscle dysmorphia risk factors in men with body dissatisfaction. The investigators hypothesized that the program would reduce eating disorder risk factors to a greater degree compared to wait list control and that these effects would be maintained at 1 month follow-up.
Obesity is a major US public health problem. Few obesity prevention programs have reduced risk for weight gain over follow-up and those that have are very intensive, making dissemination difficult and costly. A brief 3-hr selective prevention program (Healthy Weight) targeting young adults with body dissatisfaction involving participant-driven healthy dietary and physical activity lifestyle changes significantly reduced increases in body mass index (BMI) and obesity onset relative to alternative interventions and assessment-only controls through 3-yr follow-up, though effects were small in magnitude. To enhance efficacy, the investigators added dissonance-inducing activities regarding unhealthy dietary and activity practices, drawing from a highly efficacious dissonance-based eating disorder prevention program. A pilot trial found that this new Project Health intervention significantly reduced increases in BMI relative to both the Healthy Weight intervention and an educational brochure condition from pre to post. The investigators propose to conduct a rigorous multisite effectiveness trial that will test whether adding the dissonance-induction elements to the originally Healthy Weight intervention improves weight gain prevention effects. 360 college students at risk for future weight by virtue of their age and weight concerns will be randomized one of three conditions: (1) a refined 6-hr group-based dissonance-based Project Health, (2) a 6-hr group-based Healthy Weight intervention, or (3) a psychoeducational video ("Weight of the World") condition. Participants will complete assessments of % body fat, mediators (including objectively measured physical activity), moderators, and other outcomes at pre, post, and 6, 12, and 24 month follow-ups.
This study will compare the effectiveness of two types of psychotherapy, a relapse prevention program and cognitive behavioral therapy, in reducing relapse and fear of eating situations in people with anorexia nervosa.
This study will examine whether family-based interpersonal psychotherapy (FB-IPT) is an effective tool for helping pre-adolescent girls and boys at risk for become obese to reduce weight gain. IPT is a time-limited group therapy for preventing and treating depression in children. It is also effective for treating binge eating disorder in adults and has resulted in weight maintenance or modest weight loss in obese adults. IPT focuses on improving how people relate to one another by relating symptoms to personal problem areas and then developing strategies for dealing with these problems. Girls and boys between the ages of 8-13 years of age who are in good general health with the exception of being overweight and whose body mass index (BMI) is above the 85th percentile for their age and sex may be eligible for this study. Candidates are screened with a physical examination, measurement of their height and weight, blood and urine tests, a DEXA scan (x-ray scan that measures body fat, muscle and bone mineral content), and questionnaires and an interview to obtain information about the child's general health, social and psychological function, and eating patterns. Parents are also screened for their health and are asked to give blood samples for genetic studies and participate in a few questionnaires and interviews. Participants are randomly assigned to participate in FB-IPT or a health education program. Both programs involve 12 weekly visits. At the end of the study, the body weight and mood of the girls and boys in both groups are compared. Participants (a parent and their child) meet individually with the therapist for 12 sessions (each approximately an 45 minutes ). Girls and boys offered FB-IPT have meetings in which they develop strategies for dealing with the problems girls struggle with that may lead to increased eating. Girls and boys in the health education group have meetings that focus on teaching teens children to live healthier lives and review topics related to developing and maintaining healthy eating and exercise. All participants are evaluated at the end of the 12-week program and asked to return to the NIH for follow-up visits at post treatment, 6 and 12 months following initiation of the program. Each child and parent will be compensated for their time and inconvenience with $40 for completing all pre-program assessments, $40 for attending the 12 week follow-up visit, $40 for the 6 month follow-up visit, and $40 for the 1-year follow-up. Therefore, each child may receive up to $160, and the participating parent may receive up to $160. If a child's second biological parent is also willing to give a genetic sample and undergo interviews, the second parent can also receive $40 for a single visit to the NIH.
This randomized clinical trial aims to evaluate the effects of consuming two different doses of pulses (1.5 cups/week or 3 cups/week) in individuals with baseline intake below 1.5 cups/week, compared to a control group receiving standard nutrition education based on the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) My Plate guidelines. The main question the Pulses study aims to answer is: • What is the effect of increasing pulse consumption (in a dose-response manner) on specific cardiometabolic risk factors, including LDL-C, CRP, HBA1C, and blood pressure compared to standard nutrition education? For secondary outcomes, this study aims to answer the following: • Does increased pulse consumption improve the following: overall serum lipid profile (Total cholesterol (TC), HDL-C, Triglycerides (TG), diet quality (measured by the Healthy Eating Index), and participants self-reported satisfaction with life (SWLS) and Satisfaction with Food-related Life (SWFoL). All participants will attend biweekly classes and food demonstrations. The pulses groups will learn to prepare various pulse-based recipes, while the control group will receive guidance on preparing healthy meals following the USDA MyPlate recommendations.
This present study will compare the efficacy of in-person versus virtually-delivered Body Project groups. It will also evaluate whether this body acceptance class produces greater reductions in eating disorder risk factor symptoms (pursuit of the thin ideal, body dissatisfaction, dieting, dietary restraint, negative affect, eating disorder symptoms, and the future onset of eating disorders over a 3-month follow-up in this population. It will also evaluate the effectiveness of this body acceptance class's ability to impact social appearance anxiety, body compassion, and self-stigma surrounding attaining help.
The purpose of this study is to better investigate the efficacy of the PRIDE Body Project in respect to preventing eating disorders in sexual minority men. In this randomized controlled trial, participants will be enrolled in one of two arms: 1) the PRIDE Body Project intervention or 2) Media Advocacy, a time and attention-matched intervention. This study will recruit participants who are between the ages of 18 and 35, identify as men, are gay, bisexual, or experience sexual attraction to men, and who express body image concerns for the San Diego area.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the 7-week Eat Breathe Thrive (EBT) program which was designed to increase positive body image, awareness, self-regulation, and mindful eating habits. This program aims to achieve these things through psychoeducation of cultural influences of beauty standards, the basic neuropsychological systems in the body and how they affect eating habits, creating a community within the group members for support, and finally through the practice of yoga. In this randomized-controlled trial (RCT), investigators will be looking at whether EBT is effective in a community sample of adult (18-65 years old) men and women at preventing and decreasing eating disorder risk and increasing positive body image and emotion regulation skills through being in tune with one's own body, mind, and community. This will take place in a sample of community members taken at ten different sites around the United States and the United Kingdom.
More than 30% of Black women with obesity binge eat. Binge eating may increase the risk for the development of metabolic syndrome and binge-eating-disorder (BED), which is associated with severe obesity. Though several effective treatments for binge eating exist, Black women have not fared well. Not only has their inclusion in treatment trials been limited, but when participating, they are more likely to drop out, and/or lose less weight, compared to their White counterparts. Furthermore, treatment for binge eating is often not available in primary care and community-based settings places where Black women are more likely to receive treatment for their eating and weight-related concerns. Currently, there is scant intervention research to treat binge eating in Black women. With the highest rates of obesity (57%) nationally, Black women are in need of culturally-relevant treatments for binge eating and weight gain prevention. Given the established relationship between frequent binge eating and subsequent weight gain, addressing binge eating among Black women with obesity is imperative.
