Point-of care-ultrasonography has the potential to transform healthcare delivery through its diagnostic and therapeutic utility. Its use has become more widespread across a variety of clinical settings as more investigations have demonstrated its impact on patient care. This includes the use of point-of-care ultrasound by trainees, who are now utilizing this technology as part of their diagnostic assessments of patients. However, there are few studies that examine how efficiently trainees can learn point-of-care ultrasound and which training methods are more effective. The primary objective of this study is to assess whether artificial intelligence systems improve internal medicine interns' knowledge and image interpretation skills with point-of-care ultrasound. Participants shall be randomized to receive personal access to handheld ultrasound devices to be used for learning with artificial intelligence vs devices with no artificial intelligence. The primary outcome will assess their interpretive ability with ultrasound images/videos. Secondary outcomes will include rates of device usage and performance on quizzes.
The goal of this randomized control study is to determine if the use of standardized coaching language by faculty trainers for teaching colonoscopy is associated with improved colonoscopy performance. The main questions it aims to answer are: * If the use of standardized coaching language is effective in improving colonoscopy training? * If the use of standardized coaching language influences the clarity of instructions by the faculty trainers during colonoscopy teaching Participants will take part in simulated colonoscopy teaching encounter using a virtual reality simulator for 1 hour in 2 different sessions 2 weeks apart. Researchers will compare 2 groups of faculty trainers to to see if the standardized coaching language effects the colonoscopy training quality.
The purpose of this study is to compare bedside rounding with hallway and conference room rounding on the neurology inpatient ward service at an academic hospital and identify best practices associated with educational and patient care outcomes. Specifically, this study will determine which rounding practices are associated with a positive educational experience for learners, greatest patient and care team communication, and time efficiency.
In this study, third year medical students on the pediatric clerkship will be randomized to receive either only written educational material (review journal articles) or written educational material plus daily text messages consisting of board style questions with online answers. The students' performance on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Pediatric Subject Evaluation will be compared between the two groups.
This study will evaluate how the educational intervention utilized affects pediatric resident comfort level with EOL discussions.

During the project, fourth-year medical students participating in a Medicine sub-internship will be randomized to an intervention group or a control group; the intervention group will receive additional training in the application of qualitative methodology to elicit and incorporate contextual factors in the clinical encounter. All students will participate in an SP assessment consisting of four standardized patients (SPs), blinded to trial arm, presenting cases with and without important biomedical and contextual factors in a counterbalanced factorial design. Performance will be compared between trial arms; the investigators hypothesize better performance in the intervention arm. In addition, performance will be compared with United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 2 clinical knowledge scores to determine whether contextualizing ability is independent of clinical knowledge, and consistency of performance across individual SP cases will be studied to determine the number of cases necessary to achieve sufficient reliability for the assessment to be used.
The purpose of this study is to test whether multi-source feedback, including self-assessment and tailored coaching, improves resident communication skills and professionalism. We hypothesize that residents who are assigned to receive multi-source feedback, in addition to receiving standard feedback, will improve significantly more than residents receiving standard feedback alone, as measured by parent and nurse ratings of specific behaviors over time.
The aim of this study is to determine if, with respect to medical students applying for residency in emergency medicine, prior knowledge of an applicant's academic record affects their ranking during their interviews. Attendings interviewing candidates will either be blinded to their prior academic records or be allowed to review them prior to the interview. The interviewer's final score of the applicant will be measured, comparing blinded versus unblinded assessors.
Investigators will assess the efficacy of a physician popular opinion leader-led intervention to increase awareness and utilization of existing evidence-based coaching or therapy among post-graduate clinical trainees at Stanford.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a very effective, long-acting method of contraception. In order to make them accessible to women, health care providers must be trained to insert them. Physicians, physician assistant, and nurse practitioners often learn how to do so by first learning about IUDs, then practicing on a model that the IUD manufacturer provides. Educators have recently been using more sophisticated models to teach clinical skills such as surgical procedures. We are investigating whether these models may be more useful in teaching IUD insertion.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of individualized performance feedback coupled with an educational module in improving resident performance of the physical and developmental examination component of developmental surveillance of infants at the two month preventive care visit.
Inhaled corticosteroids taken on a daily basis have been proven to be the most effective treatment for children with persistent asthma. However, many pediatricians still do not prescribe daily corticosteroids to their asthmatic patients; this can lead to poor health outcomes among asthmatic children. This study will evaluate an interactive medical education program that focuses on improving pediatricians' asthma management skills and on encouraging increased corticosteroid use among their patients with asthma.
This study consists of a retrospective and a prospective part. For each part and in each of 5 clinics, one intraoperative postimplant image (lateral view) of 25 patients with pertrochanteric fractures will be assessed by 5 surgeons per clinic. There are two assessments in the retrospective part. a) before an educational intervention, b) after the educational intervention. The evaluated images at these two timepoints are identical. In the prospective part, the surgeons apply their new knowledge from the educational intervention. They perform the positioning of the patient during the intraoperative fluoroscopy and record the image according to the teaching material. One postimplant image of each patient will be used for the evaluation. At all three timepoints of image assessment, a questionnaire with the same set of 7 criteria (Q1-Q7) for assessing the radiographs is used. The criteria refer to the content of the educational material.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common chronic conditions and a leading cause of pain and disability among adults. Many adults with OA have significant pain and functional limitations, even though they receive some medical care for their OA. Efforts are needed to help adults improve OA-related outcomes. This study will examine three different approaches for helping adults manage their OA-related symptoms. The study will compare a patient-based intervention (involving exercise, weight management, and cognitive behavioral pain management), a provider-based intervention (involving provision of patient-specific recommendations for care, based on evidence-based guidelines), and a combination of the two interventions, relative to usual care among patients with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. The interventions are relatively low cost and easy to disseminate, with the patient component being telephone based. This study will provide novel, valuable information of the effectiveness (and cost-effectiveness) of these three interventions in the context of real-world clinical settings.

The study examines an intervention aimed at helping veterans with behaviors that are known to improve OA-related pain and function (such as exercise, weight management, and coping with pain), as well as helping providers to implement evidence-based recommendations for clinical care. The intervention is relatively low cost and easy to disseminate, with the patient component being telephone based. Therefore, if effective, this intervention could be implemented widely across the VA healthcare system.
Our 4-year project uses public domain software and content developed by a University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) team and updates, refines, and tailors it to the unique clinician populations and electronic educational applications of VAMCs We are testing an innovative, web-based intervention adapted specifically for the VA to increase syndromic recognition, treatment, and post-exposure prophylaxis of biological warfare agents at multiple VA sites via a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Ultimately, we will disseminate the intervention throughout the entire VA system.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether having physicians evaluate their management of certain diseases as part of board recertification results in improved patient care.
The purpose of this study is to design a program to prevent suicide in elderly patients by educating patients, their families, and physicians on depression and suicidal thoughts. A program to prevent suicide in elderly patients needs to be developed. Since elderly patients frequently have doctor's visits, it may be best to have a suicide prevention program based in the patient's doctor's office. When an older person visits a primary care physician, he/she will check for signs of depression, including thoughts of suicide. The doctor will speak to the patient about depression and how to recognize it. If the individual is diagnosed with depression, the doctor will offer treatment. During this study, the information the doctor collects will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The study will last for 2 years. Eligibility for this study is age of at least 60 years and diagnosis of depression. (Depression required for 920 of the 1200 patients; 280 patients should have no symptoms of depression.)
Investigators will conduct a randomized controlled evaluation of standard nutrition education vs. standard education + Nutri, and interactive clinical software that automates diet assessment and guides resident physicians through personalized and evidence-based diet counseling. Investigators will evaluate differences in resident-reported diet counseling competence and self-efficacy using survey measures. Investigators will evaluate skills using a simulated patient appointment and coding scheme described in prior work.
The purpose of this research study is to test the feasibility and effectiveness of SIT in teaching medical students to perform in high-fidelity simulation settings similar to those they may experience in their practice.
This is a Phase I study to assess feasibility. There will be no impact on clinical care based on this study. The ultrasound system is FDA approved and could be used for clinical care independent of this research study. When a subject receives an ultrasound examination as part of standard of care or within another clinical research trial, such an examination may serve for an intra-individual comparator examination between conventional and new, ultra-portable ultrasound imaging. Patients will be identified in the clinical setting when appropriate and will be appropriately approached for consent for a combination of ultrasound with the physical exam, for medical student education, IV access, and novel application. Patients will be enrolled and accounted for in the appropriate sub-population. Additionally, to understand the impact of ultraportable ultrasound, survey tools will be used to understand the workflow and clinical care applications and integration of these devices. All staff and student members will be appropriately consented; however, the investigators anticipate that this portion of the study will be minimal risk with online consent waivers. Finally, the volunteer population will allow us to practice the use of this equipment and understand the limitations and applicability. The results will be the images acquired as well as surveys from the volunteers and those performing the scans, who will be enrolled in the staff population of this study. No significant risk is identified for subjects in this study. The largest risk, although still minimal, is an incidental finding. For this study, subjects will have the choice if they would like to be informed of an incidental finding. Reporting of incidental findings will be conducted by designated study staff after appropriate consultation and examination of the images by the PI or designee. While there are no direct benefits for subjects in this study, the study hopes to improve the implementation of ultrasound into the clinical setting into the future. This Phase I study aims to examine the feasibility of implementation and the impact on the clinical setting. Additionally, this study hopes to examine the utility and usefulness of ultrasound in medical education and thereby hopes to improve the physical exam skills of clinicians for the future.
This study compares two methods of teaching the 5As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) for tobacco dependence treatment to medical students: 1) traditional medical education (TE), and 2) multi-modal education (MME). The MME arm builds upon the traditional curriculum at the medical school by providing a web-based instructional program, a role play, preceptor training, and a booster session. The hypotheses are that MME will outperform TE on observed 5As counseling skills on the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE); and MME will outperform TE on self-reported 5As counseling skills.
Hypothesis: The use of parent education and medical play will be able to reduce patient discomfort with potential uncomfortable medical procedures. Children that have urinary tract infections and those diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux undergo a procedure called a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) to identify and follow vesicoureteral reflux. For many children and parents this can lead to considerable distress. Pre-procedure preparation can potentially reduce anxiety and improve overall experience with the procedure.
The purpose of this study is to determine if a continuing medical education (CME) program can change primary care providers' use of insulin therapy - their confidence in selecting doses and engagement of patients in the decision making as to whether to initiate insulin therapy.
This is an educational research study to compare knowledge retention of neonatal-perinatal medicine (NPM) fellowship trainees instructed on a subsection of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) NPM Content Outline using traditional didactic lectures (control group) versus a flipped classroom methodology (intervention group). The primary objectives are to assess whether the flipped classroom provides equivalent or superior outcomes for knowledge acquisition and retention compared to traditional lecture-based formats, based upon baseline and serial knowledge assessments (after the educational session, and at 3- and 6- month intervals). The secondary outcomes are learner and educator preference.
The purpose of this research study is to assess comfort of cardiology fellows and faculty with nutrition and its role in cardiovascular disease and to determine if increasing education in this arena will change clinical practice.
This project seeks to develop a comprehensive, computer-based education program for primary care physicians that will improve their skills in structured substance abuse screening, brief interventions, and referral and treatment (SBIRT). The investigators will develop two online education programs based on virtual patient (VP) technology. One program will include five typical, interactive, problem-solving VPs and the second will include five identical VPs except that two VPs will have been "worked" by substance abuse experts and presented as case studies. The remaining three VPs will be "unworked" (typical VPs). The investigators hypothesize that both education programs will significantly improve educational outcomes, compared to no training, as measured by a validated survey tool. A secondary hypothesis is that physicians using the "worked" (guided learning) program will achieve similar educational results as those using the typical VP approach, but will require less training time.
OBJECTIVE: To test a brief intervention designed to improve the cost-effectiveness of care provided by medicine housestaff for hospitalized patients. HYPOTHESIS: A brief intervention in which medicine residents receive itemized bills for recent patients cared for by them, followed by a discussion on approaches to reducing unnecessary inpatient costs, can result in significant cost reductions without adversely affecting patient outcomes.
