13 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
Nursing students (N=32) will be randomized to begin period 1 in either a high-fidelity or low-fidelity simulated experience with a mock patient wearing a breast model and holding a newborn simulator and then cross over in period 2 to the opposite arm. Data on student satisfaction, engagement, self-efficacy, and performance and simulator fidelity will be collected via Qualtrics surveys (defined, 6-point Likert scale), written and oral reflection, audio-video recordings of clinical lactation encounter, and clinical lactation skills checklists and global performance ratings. Nursing students in the accelerated master's program will be recruited while completing their required simulation coursework. A random number generator will be used to randomly assign students to a treatment arm. Investigators will require at least 8 students per arm (power 80%, alpha 5%). Investigators will recruit 32 students for two study dates to compare the high-fidelity LiquidGoldConcept products to two competitor products. The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and Simulation Center will be the only sites where human subjects research will be performed. The collaborating investigators (Drs. Debbie Busch, Joanne Silbert-Flagg, and Nancy Sullivan) have expertise in clinical lactation education and simulation. With the collaborating investigators LiquidGoldConcept has already completed pilot studies to establish the feasibility of our approach and validate the survey instruments.
This is a pragmatic cluster-randomized control trial (RCT) of an Advance Care Planning (ACP) Video Program for nursing home (NH) patients ≥ 65 years old who are cared for in 360 NH facilities (intervention arm n=119; control arm n=241) within two NH health care systems: Genesis HealthCare and PruittHealth. The intervention NH facilities will implement the ACP Video Program, while the control NH facilities will follow their usual ACP procedures. The trial will evaluate the effectiveness of the ACP Video Program by comparing hospitalizations, advance directives, and hospice use in the intervention vs. control NHs.
The purpose of this study is to assess knowledge about emotional connection, attitude about relational health, and efficacy of Welch Emotional Connection Screen (WECS) training in the NICU. The investigators seek to discern if through this didactic training, frontline NICU clinicians can be taught to reliably use the WECS to rate parent-child relational health. Additionally, the investigators seek to learn if there is construct and theoretical validity of the hospitalized infant preterm WECS by correlating WECS scores to physiological, behavioral and mental health markers for parent and infant.
The aims of this proposal are to (1) examine the feasibility of providing a training course of Auricular Point Acupressure (APA) for clinical oncology nurses who can integrate APA into real-world nursing care settings and (2) examine the effectiveness of APA on cancer-related pain (CRP) under the usual conditions.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of different educational modules in training graduate students from Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus and from the Columbia School of Social Work to assess the emotional connection of mother/child dyads with accuracy. The investigators hypothesize that after completing the educational module involving recorded dyad interactions, subjects will achieve coding reliability with the PI.
Poor nutritional status and malnutrition are prevalent for patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer. Inadequate dietary intake is multi factorial, with patients experiencing dysphagia and or anorexia caused by various cancer treatments. Current standard practice utilizes Gastrostomy Tube placement to manage adverse nutritional effects related to Head and Neck cancer treatment.
Using an exploratory study design with an educational intervention, a pre/post evaluation of ethical confidence and competence will be completed for nursing leaders working in either acute care or post-acute care with primary purpose to increase ethical competency and confidence in decision making for nursing leaders in a clinical role.
The study used the Practical, Robust, Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM) with mixed methods to: redesign a diabetes survival skills education (DSSE) program (DM2Go) content and the processes for its inpatient delivery; and to evaluate the feasibility of integrating and implementing high-tech tablet computer-enabled delivery of the DSSE program for hospital inpatients within usual workflow by staff on general medical/surgical units (MSUs) and a behavioral health unit. The four study phases were: I) Interviews and focus groups with stakeholders to identify perceived barriers and facilitators for implementation; II) Redesign of the D2Go program to address usability issues and potential barriers and to optimize perceived facilitators; III) Development of implementation processes and a D2Go toolkit; IV) Conduct of a prospective cohort pilot study on three MSUs and one BHU.
Nursing home (NH) patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias often receive unwanted, burdensome treatments such as hospitalization. Advance care planning (ACP) is a key strategy to support patients and family-caregivers in making informed decisions and ensuring treatment preferences are proactively known and honored. The ACP Specialist Program will improve care and reduce unwanted, burdensome hospitalizations through improved ACP procedures, standardized staff education on ACP, and systematic ACP facilitation delivered by existing NH staff.
The purpose of this study is to test a brief education program for oncology nurses, to enhance their skills for managing psychosocial stressors associated with providing direct patient care. The investigators will explore efficacy of the intervention for reducing psychological stress and medical errors.
The proposed study is looking to examine the effects of High-Fidelity Patient Simulation (HFPS) on clinical reasoning skills and interprofessional competencies in Physical Therapy and Nursing students. The proposed study will have two objectives: 1. Assess the use of HFPS and whether it has an effect of improving physical therapy and nursing student performance related to clinical reasoning skills during simulated clinical situations. 2. Assess the use of HFPS and whether it has an effect of improving physical therapy and nursing student self-reported changes in team work and communication based on the IPEC core competencies Researchers will compare students who do not receive a simulation (Group C) to those who receive two simulations (Group E). Participants will: 1. Be assigned to one of 2 groups (Group C, Group E) 2. Based on group assignment receive no simulation or 2 simulations 3. Each group will be assessed at the end for their inter-professional attitudes and clinical reasoning skills
The objective of our program is to evaluate the effect of home health nurse intervention and education on hospital admissions, ER utilization and asthma control of Passport asthma patients. The investigators hypothesize that case management and in home education by nurses will decrease hospitalizations and ER asthma visits and improves disease control in our population. Our clinic population consists of primarily inner-city, low income, medicaid recipients. This population suffers from severe asthma much more than the typical pediatric population. Asthma remains the most frequent cause of hospital admission for our patient population. Home health nurse asthma education and home visits have been reported to reduce asthma triggers in the home and improve asthma control. The unique partnership between the pediatrician and the home health nurse will give us a better understanding of the health needs for this population, will improve quality of care and deliver more cost effective care.
The BEACON trial (Best Practices for End-of-Life Care for Our Nations' Veterans) was a six-site implementation study to evaluate a multi-component, education-based intervention to improve the quality of end-of-life care provided in VA Medical Centers.
