Acute Effects of Exercise in College Students With ADHD
Description

The overall objective of this study is to examine physical exercise as an intervention for ADHD. The rationale for the proposed study is that physical exercise could serve as an effective treatment for college students with ADHD that has low costs, low risks, and ancillary health benefits and may address the limitations of existing treatments. The central hypothesis is that college students with ADHD will exhibit greater degrees of improvement in executive functioning (i.e., sustained attention, working memory) immediately following sprint interval training (SIT), relative to non-ADHD peers. This hypothesis was formulated based on preliminary studies demonstrating reduced ADHD symptoms and improved executive functioning following physical exercise. Multiple 2 (ADHD vs. control) x 2 (male vs. female) x 2 (exercise vs. none) repeated measures ANOVAs will be conducted to compare students with ADHD (n = 24) to controls (n = 24). The expected outcomes are to confirm this hypothesis and demonstrate the need for further study of physical exercise. If confirmed, the results will provide pilot data for a larger NIH grant proposal aimed at further examining the acute effects of physical exercise (i.e., improved cognitive functioning immediately following exercise) and also the chronic effects of physical exercise (i.e., improved functioning after engaging in regular exercise for an extended period). This outcome is expected to have an important positive impact because physical exercise may serve as an effective treatment for college students with ADHD that is less risky than stimulants, less time-consuming than therapy, and provides ancillary health benefits (i.e., increasing physical fitness, decreasing obesity).

Effect of Stellate Ganglion Block on ME/CFS
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to study the effects of stellate ganglion block (SGB) in participants with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The main questions it aims to answer are: Does SGB treatment improve symptoms of ME/CFS (e.g. brain fog, fatigue)? Do changes in symptoms go along with changes in blood or saliva? Participants will receive a total of six blocks over three weeks (one block on each side, one day apart, per week). Prior to treatment and at two points following treatment, participants will complete surveys, take a cognitive (puzzle type) test, and provide blood and saliva for analysis. Participants will measure their heart rate daily using a free smart phone app.

Effect of Huperzine A on Cognitive Function and Perception of Effort During Exercise
Description

This study evaluates the effects of acute huperzine A ingestion prior to exercise on cognitive function and perceived effort in exercise-trained individuals. Huperzine A has shown the ability to improve cognitive function in dementia patients, and is currently marketed as a cognitive enhancing supplement. Study participants will receive either huperzine A or placebo during the first experimental session, and will receive the other substance during the second session.

The Effects of a Sub-maximal Exercise Program on Adolescents Who Sustained a Concussion
Description

Patients who sustain a concussion will undergo a sub-maximal exercise protocol throughout their recovery. Cerebrovascular function, heart rate, and symptom severity, and exercise volume will be monitored throughout.

Effects of Ranolazine on Coronary Flow Reserve in Symptomatic Diabetic Patients and CAD
Description

Coronary vascular dysfunction is highly prevalent among patients with known or suspected Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)1, increases the severity of inducible myocardial ischemia (beyond the effects of upstream coronary obstruction)2, and identifies patients at high risk for serious adverse events, including cardiac death1, 3-5. Diabetic patients without known CAD with impaired coronary vascular function show a risk of cardiac death comparable to, and possibly higher, than that for non-diabetic patients with known CAD10. In the setting of increased oxygen demand, coronary vasodilator dysfunction can upset the supply-demand relationship and lead to myocardial ischemia, subclinical left ventricular dysfunction (diastolic and systolic), and symptoms. The significance of microvascular coronary dysfunction is increasingly recognized as invasive and non-invasive (PET) methods of quantifying CFR become available. Importantly, current treatment strategies for obstructive CAD, such as percutaneous coronary intervention with angioplasty and stenting, are not helpful in microvascular disease. Similarly, mortality-altering treatments for systolic heart failure, such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, have not been beneficial in treating diastolic dysfunction.

Effect of Combined Exercise, Heat, and Quercetin Supplementation on Whole Body Stress Response
Description

The purpose of this study is to determine whether dietary quercetin supplementation effects thermotolerance and heat acclimation in human subjects exposed to exercise/heat stress. Specific Aim I. To determine if quercetin in combination with repeated bouts of thermally stressful exercise will impact intestinal barrier function. The investigators will examine urinary lactulose excretion, plasma endotoxin,plasma quercetin, inflammatory cytokines (TNF-a \& Il-6), anti-inflammatory cytokines (Il-10), and HSP70 and HSF-1 content of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Specific Aim II. To determine whether quercetin's suppresses the ability of human subjects to acclimate to exercise/heat stress. The investigators will examine body temperatures, heart rates, physiological strain, sweat and plasma volume responses to standardized heat tolerance tests.
