COMPLETED
A Clinical Trial of Epizon-701 (EPN-701) in Subjects With End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Description

Patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) are prone to early and accelerated vascular calcification. Both the prevalence and extent of the vascular calcification are predictive for cardiovascular morbidity and all-cause mortality in this population. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that dialysis patients have a primary, functional deficiency of Vitamin K2 as evidenced by reduced levels of circulating biomarkers including carboxylated forms of Matrix Gla Protein (MGP), Osteocalcin, and Fetuin-A, which are important inhibitors of vascular calcification. Decreased levels of Vitamin K2 are known to lead to microvascular calcification and are associated with dermatological and cardiovascular conditions such as calciphylaxis and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The purpose of this Phase 2 study is to examine the safety and pharmacokinetics of EPN-701 (menaquinone-7; MK-7) and to assess the effects on certain circulating biomarkers when MK-7 is orally administered once daily for 14 days.

COMPLETED
Evaluation of Accuracy of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in Patients With End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) on Intermittent Hemodialysis (iHD).
Description

Recent advances in continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and availability of commercial CGM products to patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes has made the use of CGM more widespread. CGMs work by placing a probe underneath the skin of a patient, into the interstitial space. Patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) who are on intermittent hemodialysis (iHD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) undergo fluid shifts between the interstitial fluid and intravascular space during dialysis treatments. These fluid shifts, uremia, acidosis, and volume overload (increase in interstitial fluid volume due to ESRD) have the potential to impact the performance of the most advanced and commercially available CGMs; however, use of CGM in these patients has not yet been studied.Use of CGM, and potentially hybrid closed loop insulin delivery systems that are dependent on accurate continuous glucose monitoring, has the potential to improve glucose control and quality of life in these patients (7). This study team feels that this study will be valuable in collecting preliminary data needed with the goal of validating the use of CGM in this patient population. The specific aim is to conduct a pilot study to evaluate the accuracy of continuous glucose monitors (CGM) in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients on intermittent hemodialysis (iHD).

TERMINATED
Performance Evaluation of the AMIA APD Solution Generation System in Patients End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Description

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a well-established treatment for renal failure including long-term management of end stage renal disease (ESRD) by continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). Complementary therapies offer longer term survival for patients with ESRD. However, none of them are devoid of side effects and today their limitations are better understood by the nephrologist. The AMIA APD Solution Generation System combines an updated AMIA APD Cycler with Sharesource Platform (previously cleared) with an in-home water system technology and leverages newly developed AMIA APD Concentrates. The AMIA APD Concentrates, after dilution by the AMIA APD Solution Generation System, are indicated for adult patients in acute or chronic renal failure when non-dialytic medical therapy is judged to be inadequate.

UNKNOWN
Impact of Adherence to Anemia Management Policy on Repeat Hospitalization in End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Description

The investigators hypothesize that the post-hospitalized patient status is characterized by subacute and reversible metabolic and hematological changes that, if addressed and treated in a timely manner, would result in a reduced risk for repeat hospitalization. Consequently, a structured quality improvement program, focused on increasing adherence to company wide anemia management policies (ie hemoglobin monitoring within the first 3-5 days post-hospitalization, followed by an appropriate EPO dose modification within the 7 days post-hospitalization), will significantly decrease the risk of hospital re-admission in the 30 days after discharge.
