HomeStyles-2: Shaping HOME Environments and LifeSTYLES to Prevent Childhood Obesity in SNAP-Education
Description

Childhood obesity prevention efforts are needed in the United States, especially for families with low income. Educating parents and caregivers on simple lifestyle and affordable home environment changes is an effective strategy to improve health outcomes for the entire family. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine whether HomeStyles-2, a nutrition education and childhood obesity prevention program for families with children in middle childhood (ages 6 to 11 years), motivates parents to shape their home environments and weight-related lifestyle practices to be more supportive of optimal health and weight status of their children aged 6-11 years more so than those in the control condition. The study will include the experimental group and an attention control group who will engage in a nutrition education program, Eat Healthy Be Active, that is equal in nonspecific treatment effects but does not overlap on topics covered in HomeStyles-2. This study will be implemented in Florida's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) program, which provides nutrition education and obesity prevention supports for individuals with low income who are receiving or eligible for SNAP benefits. Nutrition Educators will be randomized to the experimental or attention control condition, and will lead participants through virtual, group-based nutrition education series. The following data will be collected: sociodemographic characteristics of the participant and child; child and parent health status; parent weight-related cognitions; weight-related behaviors of the participant and child; and weight-related characteristics of the home environment. Enrollment for this study will begin late-2021.

HomeStyles-2: Shaping HOME Environments and LifeSTYLES to Prevent Childhood Obesity
Description

Parents are children's primary role models, are food and physical activity gatekeepers, and create the structure/lifestyle environment within the home. Thus, parents strongly influence children's weight-related behaviors and have the opportunity to cultivate a "culture of health" within the home. Yet, there continues to be a dearth of evidence-based obesity prevention intervention programs, especially for families with children aged 6 to 11 years, commonly called the middle childhood years. The aim of the HomeStyles-2 online learning mode RCT is to determine whether this novel, age-appropriate, family intervention enables and motivates parents to shape their home environments and weight-related lifestyle practices (i.e., diet, exercise, sleep) to be more supportive of optimal health and reduced risk of obesity in their middle childhood youth more than those in the control condition. The RCT will include the experimental group and an attention control group who will engage in a bona fide concurrent treatment different in subject matter but equal in nonspecific treatment effects. The participants will be families with school-age children who are systematically randomly assigned by computer to study condition. The HomeStyles intervention is predicated on the social cognitive theory and a social ecological framework. The RCT will collect sociodemographic characteristics of the participant, child, and partner/spouse; child and parent health status; parent weight-related cognitions; weight-related behaviors of the parent and child; and weight-related characteristics of the home environment. Enrollment for this study will begin mid-2021.This paper describes these aspects of the HomeStyles-2 intervention: rationale; sample eligibility criteria and recruitment; study design; experimental group intervention theoretical and philosophical underpinnings, structure, content, and development process; attention control intervention; survey instrument development and components; outcome measures; and planned analyses.

Bleach vs. Bubbles: Assessing the Impact of the Bathroom Environment on Eczema
Description

Purpose: Evaluate the impact of cleaning the bathroom environment on the severity of eczema. Determine if part of the efficacy of bleach baths may be in cleaning the bathroom. Record data on the process in order to improve future interventions. Participants: Patients and families with eczema Procedures (methods): * Obtain baseline eczema severity scores and bacterial cultures from bathtubs * Randomize subjects to receive (1) a bathtub culture alone; (2) a culture and bathroom cleaning; and (3) a culture, cleaning, and bleach baths. * Measure changes in eczema severity scores over 4 weeks * Qualitatively evaluate the process by participants and investigators

Behavioral Research of Environment and Air Pollution Through Education
Description

The BREATHE (Behavioral Research of Environment and Air Pollution Through Education) study is a pilot randomized control trial comparing the efficacy of a classroom-based intervention to no intervention in helping middle-school students understand and make behavioral decisions about air pollution. This study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the classroom-based intervention on knowledge of air pollution, understanding of air pollution sources, and behavioral choices made to reduce both contributions to air pollution and personal exposure to air pollution. It has been well established that pollution is a racial and economic issue. Low-income areas with populations of predominantly people of color tend to be those with the highest rates of pollution and the largest particulate exposure. Creation of and exposure to this pollution is a key issue for the health of inhabitants of these areas, and of those in the broader surrounding areas. By developing, and assessing the effectiveness of, the investigators hope that the BREATHE study will give the investigators insights into how to better combat this higher exposure and reduce the health risks for those in high pollution areas. The study will take place in 4 visits over a period of 12 months. The hypothesis is that the classroom-based intervention will be effective in leading to behaviors that will reduce exposure to air pollution.

Effects of Visual Cues and Education for People Who Live Within Long Term Care Communities to Assist in Wayfinding
Description

The ability to find one's way in the world is known as wayfinding. Many older adults who live in senior communities, such as independent living and assisted living residences, find wayfinding very challenging. Often times, these communities are not designed in a way that helps people find their way very easily. When people cannot find their way, they can get lost, be dependent upon others for getting out and about, or even be afraid to leave their rooms. The purpose of this study is to find out if distinctive signs and decorative elements, along with a special type of education called Spaced-Retrieval education, help residents in these communities find their way more effectively. Twelve senior communities will be assigned by chance to one of three conditions, including: 1) control - no change (the community stays the same); 2) signs and decorative elements enhanced; and 3) signs, decorative elements, and special education added. After agreeing to be in the study, the participants will be asked to find their way to certain places in their community four times over a year. Some people will be asked to participate in educational sessions on wayfinding. In addition, some people will be asked to wear a location tracker, (like a fitness tracker), for four weeks during the year. How well people find their way, along with how much they travel about within the communities, will be compared between the three groups. It is hypothesized that those in the communities with special signs and decorative elements will find their way more effectively than those in the control communities. It is also hypothesized that participants in the communities with the special education intervention will find their way better than those without the education. Finally, it is hypothesized that participants in the communities with signs and cues and education will travel about further distances than those in the control communities. The results of the study can help people who have a tendency to get lost find their way more effectively in their community, and this could result in more independence.

Person-Environment Fit for Persons With Dementia
Description

This trial will assess feasibility of a non-pharmacological intervention for persons living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) to improve behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia and functional performance. Using a two-arm, prospective randomized controlled trial, 38 dyads (person with ADRD and caregiver) will complete an 8-week telehealth occupational therapy intervention provided via Zoom with caregivers and persons with dementia or receive an active control with 8 telehealth sessions to discuss publicly available caregiver education with a non-clinical research assistant.

Leveraging Regulatory Flexibility for Methadone Take-Home Dosing to Improve Retention in Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder
Description

Using a stepped-wedge randomized controlled trial, the study will test whether a clinic-level multidimensional intervention conducted in 36 opioid treatment programs (OTPs) will improve clinical decision making, regulatory confusion, legal liability concerns, capacity for clinical practice change, and financial barriers to take- home dosing (THD) for methadone as compared to treatment as usual.

Effect of High Rebound Mattress Toppers on Sleep and Sleep-Related Symptoms
Description

The purpose of the study is to evaluate effects of high rebound mattress toppers (i.e., airweave®) on sleep and sleep-related symptoms. The study will compare effects of use of high rebound mattress toppers versus use of low rebound mattress toppers on sleep and sleep related symptoms and core body temperature during diagnostic sleep studies.
