Impact of Hyperarch Fascia Training on Ankle Health and Exercise Performance
Description

The purpose of this clinical trial is to evaluate whether the Hyperarch Fascia Training (HFT) program can reduce ankle pain and improve jump performance in active adults aged 20-45 with a history of ankle sprains. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an HFT intervention group or a control group, maintaining regular activity. Over 12 weeks, participants will complete remote training sessions, track jump performance using the "My Jump Lab" app, and complete ankle pain and stability questionnaires. All activities and assessments will be conducted remotely with guidance from certified coaches.

Effect of Resveratrol Supplementation on Exercise Performance and Recovery

To examine the effects of once daily supplementation with 500mg VeriSperse® resveratrol (VRES) for 17 days on muscle function, delayed onset muscle soreness, systemic concentrations of muscular damage markers and markers of oxidative stress in resistance trained young adult males following a damaging isoinertial squat protocol (ISP).

The Investigators Conducted a Study to Examine the Impact of Wild Ginseng Extract (WG) on Exercise Performance, Cognitive Function, and Fatigue Recovery Among Twelve Healthy Adult Males
Description

The goal of this clinical trial was to learn if Wild Ginseng extract (WG) influences exercise performance, cognitive function, and fatigue recovery from the exercise. The main questions to answer were: * Does WG improve exercise performance? * Does WG improve cognitive function? * Does WG facilitate recovery from the exercise? The investigators will compare WG to a Placebo (a look-alike substance that contains no substance) to see if WG works. Participants will: * Take WG or a Placebo every day for 7 days with a 2-week wash-out (It is a specific time frame. During this time, certain substances are removed from the body). * Visit the laboratory a total of five times for the tests, including one pre-familiarization (to be familiar with the exercise and other procedures)

Acute Effect of Capsimax on Resistance Exercise Performance, Muscle Oxygenation, Nitric Oxide Release, Resting Energy Expenditure and Reaction Time
Description

Capsimax is a novel, proprietary encapsulated form of capsaicin, a natural and bioactive phytochemical found in chili pepper and other spicy food. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Capsimax on resistance exercise performance, reaction time, and resting energy expenditure around exercise. This investigation will also measure muscle oxygenation and intramuscular nitric oxide in real time during resistance exercise using a non-invasive wearable technology. Primary Objective • To examine the effects of Capsimax on physical performance metrics including peak power and rate of force development during an isometric strength test and performance during the barbell back squat exercise protocol (e.g., repetitions performed, total volume, peak power, average power). Secondary Objectives * To examine the effects of Capsimax on resting energy expenditure around exercise. * To examine the effects of Capsimax on nitric oxide bioavailability and skeletal muscle oxygenation during exercise. Exploring the Relationship Between Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Training Load, and Exercise Performance
Description

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. It is an indirect and ubiquitous biomarker of performance readiness and recovery measured by most consumer-grade wearable fitness trackers. However, there is little documented on the relationship between HRV, training load, and performance measures in the Real-World. Whoop wrist-worn activity trackers have been validated against the gold-standard Electrocardiography (ECG) for HRV and HR measurements. Whoop leverages photoplethysmography (PPG) technology to continuously track (HR, HRV, respiratory rate, energy expenditure) and provides, daily, individual insights, trends, and coaching to improve strain, sleep, and recovery. Research has demonstrated that heart rate variability (HRV) guided training may be more optimal compared to predetermined training for aerobic exercise improvements. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of providing personalized training recommendations based on HRV measured by a consumer-grade wearable (Whoop) in a real-world setting to better understand the HRV relationship with performance.

Breathing With a Facemask Exercise Performance
Description

This study will determine the dyspnea response in chronic lung disease volunteers during treadmill walking with and without added inspiratory resistance. This study will also determine the level of dyspnea and exercise sense of effort in individuals walking on a treadmill when elevations occur. Comparisons will be made of a participant's exercise response with and without increased inspiratory resistance. In this study, exercise performance will be analyzed based on physiological and perceptual measures. The participant will undergo two sessions: one session will be a standard exercise walking test without an inspiratory resistance; the other session will be the same standard exercise walking test while breathing with an inspiratory resistance equal to a N95 facemask (R=10-15 cmH2O/L/sec). Performance will be determined by physiological measures. Perception will be determined by scores based on numerical scales and automatically with the forehead Vitality remote monitoring sensor.

The Inorganic Nitrate and eXercise Performance in Heart Failure (iNIX-HF)
Description

The goals of this project are to determine the effectiveness of acute (2 hours after a single dose) and chronic (after 6 weeks of once-a-day dosing) KNO3 treatment (10mmol) vs. placebo on quadriceps muscle power and on aerobic exercise performance (V̇O2peak) in patients with HFrEF (left ventricular ejection fraction \<45%). The investigators hypothesize that both acute and chronic dosing of 10mmol of KNO3 will improve exercise performance in HFrEF. To test this hypothesis, the investors will perform a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm design study.

Impact of Neck Cooling Collar on Exercise Performance in the Heat
Description

During exercise in the heat, the thermoregulatory system impacts performance in an athletic population. Increased in core body temperature could lead to development of heat-related illnesses and impair physical performance. To facilitate heat loss and optimize performance during exercise in the heat, various cooling strategies, including cold water immersion and wearable cooling devices have been previously explored. Although whole body cooling by cold water immersion is considered to be the most effective way to reduce core body temperature, this cooling method would not be feasible for athletes during practice or competition. Therefore, previous studies strongly recommended neck cooling during exercise because of the rate of heat dissipation through the large blood vessel and accessibility compared to other body part. Furthermore, multiple studies reported that the neck cooling could improve aerobic performance (i.e. running distance and time). In addition to physiological changes, human prefer to be cool in the neck region as well as the face in hot environment. Thus, local cooling of the neck is efficient way to reduce thermal discomfort during heat exposure. The novel neck cooling collar device (NeuroRescue Inc., Lafayette, LA) used in the current study may be able to produce powerful effect of conductive cooling, which result in improving performance and also reduce thermal discomfort during exercise in the heat. While this neck cooling collar would assist athletes in improving sports safety and performance by decreasing skin temperature around the neck, the effectiveness of this neck cooling collar on core temperature was not examined at this point. Moreover, other physiological and perceptual changes are important to assess along with changes in core body temperature. Therefore, this study aims to examine how internal body temperature, heart rate, perceptual measures, and athletic performance are affected by the novel neck cooling collar during exercise in the heat.

Influence of Graded Hypercapnia on Endurance Exercise Performance
Description

The aim of this randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial is to determine the effects of graded hypercapnia (0, 2, and 4% inspired CO2) on endurance performance. Twelve healthy and fit young adults (men and women) will complete this study. Participants will perform experimental trials on 3 separate days (one each breathing 0%, 2%, and 4% inspired CO2-all with normal 21% oxygen). During each trial, they will perform 10 minutes of submaximal treadmill walking exercise and then complete a self-paced 2-mile treadmill run time-trial.

The Impact of Adequate Water Intake on Exercise Performance and Mood in Women and Men
Description

Dehydration is defined as the state of water deficit due to excessive water losses and/or small water intake. Underhydration is the result of inadequate water intake leading to activation of water hormonal homeostasis, characterized by elevated vasopressin, lower urinary output, and concentrated urine without any measurable changes in total body water. It is well established that dehydration (water deficit) decreases exercise performance and worsens mood, mainly in women. However, the impact of increased water intake in underhydrated individuals on their exercise capacity and mood is not known. The aim of the proposed study is to investigate the impact of increased water intake in underhydrated individuals on aerobic exercise performance and mood in both women and men.

Influence of Caffeinated and Non-caffeinated Pre-workout Supplements on Resistance Exercise Performance
Description

This study is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial examining the effects of caffeinated and non-caffeinated pre-workout supplements on resistance exercise performance. Resistance-trained adults will be randomly assigned to complete three study conditions (caffeinated pre-workout, non-caffeinated pre-workout, and placebo) in one of the six possible condition orders. During each condition, participants will report to the laboratory for ingestion of the assigned beverage and subsequent muscular performance testing. Major performance outcomes will be force production variables from a mechanized squat device and maximal strength and muscular endurance on the bench press and leg press exercises.

Supplemental Iron Improves Submaximal Exercise Performance in Non-anemic Iron Depleted Women
Description

The specific aims of the current study were: 1) To determine the prevalence of IDNA in a sample of Mexican women of reproductive age and 2) To determine how iron supplementation in IDNA women influences physical work capacity during submaximal exercise . The researchers hypothesized that marginally iron depleted women will have improved physical work capacity during submaximal intermittent exercise tests after dietary iron supplementation. However, no improvement in peak maximal oxygen consumption after dietary iron supplementation because they will remain non-anemic.

Effects of Herbal Supplements on Endurance Exercise Performance

The effects of these supplements has been well studied in animals but whether or not the same effects translate to humans is still unclear. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to determine whether combined supplementation of Rhodiola and Cordyceps, compared to Rhodiola alone and placebo, will demonstrate a greater improvement in oxygen consumption (ie. Acetazolamide and Exercise Performance at Altitude
Description

The goals of the present study are to evaluate whether the most common, and effective, treatment for acute mountain sickness (AMS), acetazolamide (AZ), has a negative, positive, or no influence on exercise performance, cognitive performance, or manual dexterity in young healthy subjects during simulated altitude exposure. AMS represents a serious challenge to the health and performance of the Warfighter who may need to rapidly deploy to high altitude. However, there have been concerns that AZ might alter or impair endurance exercise performance, and possibly fine motor skills. These would represent major limitations to the use of this drug in a Warfighter who has a specific timeframe in which to accomplish mission tasks. In the present project, we will use exposure to simulated altitude in the USARIEM hypobaric chamber to quantify the impact, if any, of AZ on endurance exercise performance following rapid ascent to 3500 meters (m) in unacclimatized lowlander volunteers. The study will be conducted using a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study design. Ten male and female volunteers will complete one orientation day, one VO2peak day, three days of familiarization testing at sea level (SL), then two rounds of experimental testing. Each round of experimental testing consists of six days including four days to establish baseline euhydration, followed by a 30 hour (hr) exposure to 3500 m. Volunteers will have a two week break between experimental testing rounds for washout of any effects of altitude acclimation. During one experimental round, volunteers will take two doses of AZ each day (Phase 1: 250 mg/dose,500 mg/day, Phase 2: 125 mg/dose, 250 mg/day) starting 48 hr prior to their altitude exposure and continuing for the 30 hr stay at high altitude. During the other experimental condition, volunteers will be given a placebo at the same time points as the doses of AZ. Prior to altitude exposure, AMS will be evaluated and volunteers will then ascend to a simulated altitude of 3500 m, where they will remain for 30 hr. Volunteers will rest at altitude for an hr, after which they will complete an AMS questionnaire, resting ventilation measurements, provide a blood sample and complete cognitive and finger dexterity testing. Subjects will then perform 15 minutes (min) of steady state (SS) treadmill exercise at 40-45% of SL VO2peak and a 2 mile treadmill time trial (TT). Volunteers will stay overnight in the hypobaric chamber with research staff supervision. The following morning, metabolic and blood measurements will again be completed, after which volunteers will perform the exercise testing for a second time. Cognitive and finger dexterity testing will be performed before volunteers return to sea level (i.e., "descend" from the simulated altitude). The results of the proposed study will, for the first time, provide quantitative evidence regarding whether AZ treatment impairs endurance exercise performance in the context of a Warfighter-relevant endurance exercise task.

Nitrate and Exercise Performance in Middle to Older Aged Adults

Research with young healthy individuals has shown that beetroot juice beverages that contain large amounts of nitrate can improve exercise performance. Currently, it is not know whether the consumption of beetroot juice beverages high in nitrate can improve exercise performance in higher functioning middle- to older-aged adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the effect of two different beetroot juice beverages (one high in nitrate and one low in nitrate) on exercise performance in middle- to older-aged adults.

Effect of an H1 Receptor Antagonist on Exercise Performance in Hypoxia
Description

This study seeks to determine whether a simple, single intervention of Cetirizine / Zyrtec® use can improve exercise performance of active individuals when acutely exposed to altitude. For this project, healthy subjects will perform steady state and progressive work rate exercise, endurance performance time trials, and repeated sprint performance time trials in the laboratory at a simulated altitude of 3000m (9900ft) after dosing with 10 mg of Cetirizine or a placebo in a repeated measures design.

Banana Cultivars and Exercise Performance and Recovery
Description

In a previous study at the Appalachian State University (ASU) Human Performance Laboratory at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), investigators showed that cyclists ingesting about one-half of a banana with water every 15 minutes cycled 75-km faster (5%) than with water alone. The polyphenols (i.e., chemicals in plants with health benefits) in the banana improved the capacity to counter oxidative stress, and the sugars lowered post-exercise inflammation. The cyclists reported some gastrointestinal discomfort, however, from the high volume of bananas consumed. Dole Foods, the sponsor of this study, has a banana collection that includes many different varieties, including the Mini banana that has a higher sugar (50%) and phenolic (63%) content than the typical banana (Cavendish) available in stores. Thus athletes should experience similar performance benefits from a smaller volume of Mini compared to Cavendish bananas, and reduced gastrointestinal symptoms. If study results are favorable, Dole Foods may market the Mini banana as the "sport" banana. The purpose of this study is to compare ingestion of Mini and Cavendish bananas with an equicaloric, sugar-only beverage or water on 75-km cycling performance and post-exercise oxidative capacity and stress, inflammation, immune function, muscle damage and soreness, and gastrointestinal symptoms.

The Role of Hydration on Exercise Performance - ODIN
Description

During exercise in the heat, there is a need to replenish fluids in order to avoid dehydration and decrease the risk for heat illness. What drives this urge to drink is the thirst mechanism. Following ingestion of fluids, there is an inhibition of thirst before there is a replenishing of fluids. However, there is little scientific evidence of where thirst is inhibited, if this thirst inhibition is augmented by exercise and how thirst itself influence exercise performance. Further, during rehydration studies, it is very difficult to successfully blind a subject to their drinking/hydration protocol. Previous studies that have blinded a subject to their drinking have used various methods such as intravenous fluid administration and/or nasogastric tubes. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to examine the mechanistic roles thirst inhibition plays while exercising in the heat while undergoing intravenous fluid administration. Specific attention will be directed to the cardiovascular and thermoregulatory function of the individuals. All blood, cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, and perceptual measures are shown in the diagram below.

Inorganic NItrate and EXercise Performance in Heart Failure (iNIX-HF): Dose Response
Description

The purpose of this study is to do the work that is necessary and sufficient for setting up an appropriate multi-center, randomized clinical trial (RCT) of a new therapy for heart failure: inorganic nitrate. The investigators will first determine the effects and palatability of \~12.8mmol KNO3 (an oral pill) as compared to the roughly equivalent amount of nitrate in 2 beetroot juice (BRJ) Sports Shots (by James White Drinks). Next, the investigators will determine the effects of inorganic nitrate (KNO3 in an oral pill format) on blood pressure, blood nitrate levels, breath nitric oxide (NO) levels, and exercise performance in a dose-response study. Third, the investigators will perform a small phase II chronic treatment study that will allow them to determine the best primary endpoint and the numbers of patients the investigators will need to study in the large, multi-center RCT to follow this project. In the small study and in the RCT to follow, the investigators will determine whether inorganic nitrate can improve aerobic exercise capacity, muscle power, and speed of muscle contraction, and lessen the effort of breathing during exercise.

Substrate Utilization, Exercise Performance, and Skeletal Muscle Response to Energy Deficit and Altitude Acclimatization
Description

This research will evaluate nutrition requirements for missions at high altitude (i.e. \>7800 feet above sea level) and the information obtained can be used to optimize nutrient content specifications for combat rations. The objectives are: 1. Determine whether loss of lean body mass resulting from negative calorie balance over a 22-d period at high altitude can be prevented by increasing dietary protein intake. 2. Determine the efficacy of carbohydrate (glucose and fructose) supplementation on aerobic exercise performance at sea level, acute exposure to high altitude, and in response to 22-d period of negative calorie balance at high altitude. 3. Determine cognitive function, sleep patterns, and behavioral responses to high altitude and underfeeding. 4. Determine appetite and eating behavior in response to high altitude and sustained underfeeding. 5. Examine the effects of high altitude, negative calorie balance, dietary intake manipulations on gut health.
