Dose-Dependent Effect of Intranasal Insulin in Humans Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
Description

The purpose of this trial is to study the brain response using functional MRI (fMRI) before and after varying doses of insulin given through the nose. The magnetic resonance imaging uses a very strong magnet to produce images of participant's brain. It becomes a functional MRI when the study team looks at the activity within the brain (blood flow / change in metabolism).

Targeting Large-scale Networks in Depression With Real-time Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Neurofeedback
Description

The purpose of this study is to develop a technique called real time fMRI neurofeedback. This technique uses a regular MRI scanner, except that special software allows the researchers to measure activity in participants brain, using fMRI, and then give information, in the form of a feedback signal, which indicates brain activity in real time, while in the MRI scanner. The larger goal of this study is to develop ways to help people, including those with depression, better regulate brain activity. The researchers think that this may be helpful in managing psychiatric symptoms. This study design has three phases, however, only two phases (phase 2 and 3) are considered to be a clinical trial. Phase 2 (part 2) was registered and is NCT05934604. This is the phase 3 (part 3) for this project and is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Description

Description

This project will study the feasibility of motor rehabilitation in people with cerebellar ataxia using real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (rt-fMRI NF) in conjunction with motor imagery. To do so, data will be collected from healthy adults in this protocol, to be compared with data from cerebellar ataxia participants.

Rescuing the Ruminating Brain: Identifying Biomarkers of Rumination and Mindfulness Through Concurrent EEG and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Studies of Schizophrenia and Depression
Description

The investigators will acquire simultaneous EEG and fMRI data from Veterans with depression and schizophrenia and mentally healthy Veterans to assess early sensory responses, context updating, and responses to emotional images. Understanding how rumination affects engagement with the environment is the first step towards assessing its far-reaching cognitive and emotional costs, which cut across traditional diagnostic boundaries. Understanding how mindfulness restores information processing will increase our understanding of how, and for whom, it works.

Evaluation of Preoperative Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) in Patients With Brain Tumors
Description

The purpose of this study is to test the accuracy of using an imaging technique called breath-holding functional magnetic resonance imaging (BH fMRI) in addition to the standard imaging test described above. This study will allow the researchers to find out whether using BH fMRI in combination with the standard approach is the same as, better, or worse than the standard approach used alone.

Evaluation of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) in Patients Who Speak Two Languages Fluently
Description

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive test used to detect changes in brain activity by taking picture of changes in blood flow. The imaging helps doctors better understand how the brain works. Task based fMRI (TB fMRI) prompts patients to perform different activities (e.g. word selection in a reading task), and is routinely performed on patients in preparation for a Neurological surgery (surgery that involves the nervous system, brain and/or spinal cord). The purpose is to locate areas of the brain that control speech and movement; these images will help make decisions about patient surgeries. However, there are however gaps in knowledge specific to the language areas of the brain, especially for non-English patients and bilingual patients (those who are fluent in more than one language). This study proposes to evaluate if resting state fMRI (RS fMRI) that does not require any tasks, along with a novel way to analyze these images using "graphy theory," may provide more information. Graph theory is a new mathematical method to analyze the fMRI data. The overall goal is to determine if graph theory analysis on RS fMRI may reduce differences in health care treatment and outcomes for non-English speaking and bilingual patients. We hope that the results of this study will allow doctors to perform pre-operative fMRI in patients who do not speak English.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Sleep Study With Auditory Stimuli
Description

Background: An electroencephalogram (EEG) measures the brain s electrical activity. EEG shows that the louder the sound needed to wake a person, the deeper the person s sleep. Researchers are using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study people during sleep so they can view brain activity in 3D. But they still need to correlate fMRI with sound thresholds, like the EEG. Objective: To measure brain activity during sleep using fMRI and EEG. Eligibility: Healthy people ages 18 34 who can sleep on their back for several hours. Design: Participants will be screened online about their sleep and general health. At a screening visit, participants will have: Physical exam Hearing exam MRI scan. A strong magnetic field and radio waves take pictures of the brain. Participants will lie down on a bed that slides into the scanner, which is shaped like a cylinder. Participants will wear an actigraph on their wrist that records their motor activity. Participants will follow a 2-week routine. This includes regular in-to-bed and out-of-bed times and limits on alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. During the overnight visits, participants will have: Female subjects will have a urine pregnancy test. fMRI. A coil will be placed over the head. Participants will do tasks shown on a computer screen inside the scanner. EEG. Small electrodes on the scalp will record brain waves while sleeping or doing a task in the scanner. Participants will be asked to try to sleep while researchers collect fMRI and EEG data. Participants eyes will be monitored with a video camera. Headphones will deliver sounds to wake them up throughout the night. ...

Background: - Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to study the brain. It takes a series of pictures that can be used to look at how the brain processes information. It is used to study problems with thinking, language, and movement, among other things. Researchers are working to develop new and better fMRI techniques. To test these techniques, they want to perform fMRI scans on healthy volunteers. Objectives: - To test different fMRI techniques in healthy volunteers. Eligibility: - Healthy volunteers at least 18 years of age. Design: * Participants will be screened with a physical exam and medical history. * Participants will have fMRI scans of the brain. During these scans, they will be asked to perform simple tasks. These tasks may involve language, thinking, or motor skills. The scanning sessions will last up to 2 hours. * Participants may be asked to return for additional fMRI scans over several years.

Description

General anesthetic medications have been shown to cause neuronal cell death in the brains of infant rodents. Ethanol and general anesthetics both act on NMDA and GABA receptors,and appear to have similar mechanisms of toxicity in the immature rodent brain. Functional MRI (fMRI) is a technique developed for mapping brain activation and has been utilized to examine how the brains of children with a history of early exposure to ethanol function differently from children without such a history. This study will utilize fMRI to look for specific changes in brain activation patterns in children with a history of early exposure to general anesthesia, as compared to children without such exposure.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Treating Depression: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study
Description

This protocol, "Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) for the Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): A Functional Connectivity Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fcMRI) Study," is an open-label pilot treatment study. The purpose of the present protocol is to treat participants with a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder with 4 weeks of rTMS, performing fcMRI and EEG studies prior to and following treatment to determine if treatment response is related to changes in fcMRI and/or EEG results. The investigators hypothesize that patients who respond to treatment will display changes in functional connectivity patterns thought to be related to the occurrence of depressive symptoms.

An Acupuncture Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Study on Chronic Pain: Response Reliability and Dose Effect
Description

In this proposal, we plan to dynamically investigate brain response to verum acupuncture (of two different "doses") and placebo acupuncture, using a paradigm that approximates clinical acupuncture practice across multiple treatment sessions in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients. This proposal aims to: 1) characterize session-to-session brain responses to verum / sham acupuncture treatment (reliability of response) for OA patients, and 2) investigate how different "doses" of acupuncture influence brain response and acupuncture efficacy (impact of dose). The findings of this project will deepen our biological understanding on why and how acupuncture can treat chronic pain and what happens in the brain during the multiple-session acupuncture treatment.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Opioid Withdrawal in Healthy Human Volunteers
Description

Opioid medications are commonly used for pain relief. When given over time, physical dependence can occur. This results in unpleasant side effects--such as agitation and nausea--if opioid medications are suddenly stopped. However, we do not know how withdrawal affects the brain. We know that a medication named Ondansetron can help ease or prevent symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal. Through imaging of the brain by fMRI, we hope to see how opioid withdrawal, with and without the administration of ondansetron, affects brain activity.
