Home-Based Exergaming Intervention
Description

This study will employ a 3-arm randomized clinical trial to determine the effects of a 6-month home-based exergaming intervention on preschoolers' physical activity, health-related fitness, cognition, and screen time, across time, at 3, 6 and 12 months, and as an exploratory outcome, will explore the moderating effects of parent involvement and physical home environment on the intervention role of exergaming across time. Briefly, a total of 330 child-parent dyads from the Twin Cities area in Minnesota will be individually randomly assigned to: 1) an exergaming intervention group (30 min. per session, 5 sessions exergaming play per week for a 6-month period); 2) a traditional PA group (phone consultations and workshops for parents to offer 5 times 30 min. PA at home for 6 months); and 3) an attention control group (continue with usual activities at home with emailed PA tips).

Health-Related Physical Fitness Level from Smartwatches
Description

Health-related physical fitness (HRPF) has demonstrated high clinical relevance, and its level is associated with the ability to perform activities of daily living with vigor and a lower risk of chronic disease. Consequently, exercise prescription guidelines recommend improving HRPF as a focus for prevention and rehabilitation programs. Measuring and tracking HRPF often requires specialized equipment and personnel, which are expensive and less applicable to the general population. Wearables may mitigate this issue by providing useful estimates of the HRPF.

Evaluating the Fade to Fitness Program: a Barbershop-based Program for Black Men
Description

The Fade to Fitness Program is a targeted intervention designed to improve the holistic health and quality of life among Black men. This comprehensive initiative focuses on four key health behaviors: Physical Activity, Healthy Eating, Stress Management, and Depression Management. It is grounded in psychological and social theories like Self-Determination Theory, Motivational Interviewing, and Social Cognitive Theory. The program emphasizes the importance of making informed choices, feeling competent and connected, and learning through observation and modeling. Facilitators play a pivotal role, leading group discussions, providing support, and fostering an inclusive atmosphere. The program is structured into weekly sessions that tackle each health behavior, interspersed with off weeks; for community engagement, especially in barbershops, to discuss health topics and promote a healthier lifestyle.

Translational Health After School Program on Health-Related Knowledge/Behaviors and Exercise Perception
Description

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of a translational health in nutrition and kinesiology (THINK) after school program on physical variables, nutrition and exercise knowledge base/behaviors, and exercise enjoyment and confidence. Partnering with the YMCA investigators in the Kinesiology and Sport Sciences department at the University of Miami will set up the after-school THINK program offered three afternoons per week for nine months in two experimental and two control schools. The schools will consist of minority elementary school students (predominantly Hispanic and Black) in the South Florida area. The control schools will receive baseline, mid-year and follow-up testing nine months later, but will not go through the THINK program. They will instead go through their standard YMCA after school Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) program.

Patient Function/Fitness and Psychosocial Health in Improving Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Stage I-IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Description

This pilot trial studies patient function/fitness and psychosocial health in improving health-related quality of life and decreasing treatment-related toxicity in patients with stage I-IV non-small cell lung cancer. Studying function/fitness and psychosocial health may help doctors improve conventional therapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Exercise Training Study for Patients With Cystic Fibrosis
Description

The aim of this study is to test the effect of a 6-month program of self-regulated, home-based exercise with telephone reinforcement on the cardiorespiratory fitness, pulmonary function and health-related quality of life of children with cystic fibrosis (CF), compared to controls. Exploring the exercise experiences of the children and parents is a secondary aim.
