Accuracy of the Apple Watch Series 4 for Detection of Heart Rhythm: A Pilot Study
Description

The objective of this study is to assess the accuracy of the Apple Watch 4 Series watch in generating an ECG that is suitable for determination of heart rhythm compared to rhythms monitored via telemetry. Secondary objective is to assess the accuracy of the Apple Watch 4 series watch in identifying atrial fibrillation when it is present.

COMPLETED
Time to Accurate Heart Rate on Neonatal Outcomes
Description

The goal of this trial is to compare the time to first heart rate displayed for iRes Warmer with ResusView and using iRes Warmer without ResusView when used in the resuscitation (e.g. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or breathing assistance) of premature newborns (23 to 32+6 weeks gestation).

Effects of Overnight Low Oxygen Exposure on Energy Balance
Description

This research study will evaluate changes in resting metabolic rate, appetite, and heart rate variability following overnight exposure (8 h/night) to normobaric hypoxia (NH) or normobaric normoxic (NN). In randomized order, participants will sleep one night in NH conditions (\~15% oxygen; achieved with nitrogen dilution, equivalent to \~8500 feet elevation) and another night in NN (control) conditions (\~20% oxygen; achieved with nitrogen dilution, equivalent to \~1000 feet elevation).

Feasibility of a Non-invasive, Trans-abdominal, Low Cost Fetal Oximetry Probe on Pregnant Human Subjects
Description

Three non-invasive, trans-abdominal fetal oximetry probes will be tested on pregnant human subjects, in order to obtain fetal heart rate. We want to determine if this device can accurately measure a baby's oxygen level when placed on your abdomen. Current technology to measure a baby's oxygen levels requires a probe to be inserted into the vagina.

COMPLETED
Pregnancy-Related Low Back Pain and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Treatment
Description

This study compares three treatments for low back pain that started during pregnancy. The study hypothesizes that exercise, spinal manipulation, and a mind-body technique called neuroemotional technique (NET) equally affect pain intensity and disability associated with pregnancy-related low back pain. The study also hypothesizes that pain intensity and disability levels do not influence maternal heart rate variability (a measure of stress) and intrauterine attachment (a measure of relationship quality). Ten women will additionally provide blood and salivary oxytocin samples during pregnancy and periodically for three months after birth. These women and their babies will also be videotaped playing for 5 minutes at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months postpartum.

Impact of Heart Rate Characteristics Monitoring in Neonates
Description

Hypothesis: Fewer neonates managed using information from heart rate characteristics (HRC) will require intubation and mechanical ventilation as a result of sepsis and sepsis-like illness. Infants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group of infants will have the HRC index known to the physicians caring for them, and physicians will use the HRC index as they desire to aid in clinical management. Infants in the other group will have the HRC index recorded, but this information will not be displayed to the physicians caring for the infants.

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation in Back Pain- Pilot Sudy
Description

Chronic pain is a severe disabling problem within society, affecting 25-30% of the United States population.. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has the potential to provide a treatment option that is safe, scientifically-supported, low-cost, and easy-to-administer method to effectively reduce symptoms in patients suffering from chronic pain. The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility of using tACS to treat patients with chronic pain, and to collect pilot efficacy as well as EEG and EKG biomarker data for optimizing the design of subsequent large-scale studies. The treatment rationale is to renormalize the presumed pathological structure of alpha oscillations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of patients with chronic pain.

COMPLETED
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in Pregnancy: Physiologic and Clinical Effects
Description

The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent and by what physiological mechanisms Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) affects selected conditions related to pregnancy, labor and delivery.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation as an Alternative Therapy for Premature Ventricular Contractions
Description

Prospective randomized control pilot study

COMPLETED
Personalized Pacing: A New Paradigm for Patients With Diastolic Dysfunction or Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction
Description

Recent exploratory studies suggest that pacemaker patients with diastolic dysfunction (DD) or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) may benefit from a higher backup heart rate (HR) setting than the factory setting of 60 beats per minute (bpm). In this prospective double-blinded randomized controlled study, pacemaker patients with DD or overt HFpEF and either 1) intrinsic ventricular conduction or 2) conduction system or biventricular pacing will be enrolled and randomized to either a personalized lower HR setting (myPACE group, based on a height-based HR algorithm) or to the standard 60bpm backup setting (control group) for 1 year.
