Novel Approaches to Assessing Cannabis Impaired Driving (NAACID)
Description

Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Colorado School of Public Health, and Injury \& Violence Prevention Center want to learn more about how people are affected by cannabis in different ways. We will use a driving simulator to compare the driving performance of adults who use cannabis daily, occasionally or have not recently used cannabis.

Evaluation of an Interactive Mobile Phone-Based Brief Intervention to Reduce Substance-Impaired Driving
Description

Substance-Impaired Driving among emerging adults remains a significant public health concern and may be the single riskiest substance-related outcome among young adults. Brief Interventions (BIs) have been shown to reduce alcohol-impaired driving among this age group, but are not often implemented - despite their demonstrated efficacy - because it is not economically feasible to deliver in-person BIs to all emerging adult substance users. The present study will be the first to examine whether a text-messaging-based cannabis-impaired driving BI significantly decreases cannabis-impaired driving among emerging adult cannabis users compared to an informational control. Participants will be 240 emerging adults who endorse driving after cannabis use (or combined alcohol and cannabis use) at least three times in the past 3 months. After completing baseline measures, participants will be randomly assigned to receive either: a) substance use information, b) a substance-impaired driving personalized feedback intervention, or c) a substance-impaired driving personalized feedback intervention plus interactive text messages. Participants will complete outcome measures 3 and 6 months post-intervention. Repeated measures mixed modeling analyses will be used to determine whether the intervention significantly reduces substance-impaired driving over time. The project has two specific aims: 1) to evaluate a text based cannabis-impaired driving intervention in a randomized clinical trial, and 2) to determine whether the use of interactive text-messages sustains intervention effects over time.

Validation of the Drug Impaired Driving Scenario (DIDS) on the CRCDS-miniSim
Description

Subjects will participate in a 4-visit study protocol at the National Advanced Driving Simulator, part of the University of Iowa, in which they will be asked to complete assorted questionnaires, computerized cognitive tasks, and a simulator drive. Subjects will be administered 0.75 mg alprazolam (Xanax) or placebo and 500 mg vaporized cannabis (6.18% THC / \<0.025% CBD) or placebo (0% THC / 0% CBD). The primary objective of this study is to validate the Drug Impaired Driving Scenario (DIDS) using the CRCDS-2 driving simulator by assessing the acute effects of cannabis relative to placebo on simulated driving performance. Assay sensitivity will be demonstrated by the significant effect of 0.75 mg alprazolam (active comparator) on driving and cognitive endpoints.

Description

The primary goal of this project is to evaluate the efficacy of webCHAT, a single-session web-intervention, on reducing impaired driving among adolescents receiving behind-the-wheel training at driver education programs.

The Rise of Ride Sharing Companies and Trends in Impaired Driving Accidents
Description

This will be a retrospective study with data collected from the trauma registry. We plan to complete the data collection and analysis by 12/31/2020. Data on ride sharing will be obtained from the Uber and Lyft websites. Data pertaining to number of alcohol- and drug-related motor vehicle (and auto-ped) collisions will be obtained from the Texas Department of Transportation website, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Shared-Use Mobility Center (SUMC) and the Transformation of Public Transit, the Texas A\&M Transportation Institute, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Department of Transportation website (or equivalent). Sexual assault data will be obtained as available the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) database as well as from Turning Point Rape Crisis Center and surrounding hospitals in the Dallas area as well as the Uber report for sexual assaults.

Alcohol Impaired Driving: From the Laboratory to the Natural Environment
Description

This project combined laboratory and ambulatory assessment (AA) methods to test decision making associated with alcohol impaired driving (AID). Participants will complete a laboratory alcohol administration session followed by 6 weeks of mobile assessment. Data from drinking events will be examined to test how individuals make choices about driving or not after consuming alcohol.

Alcohol Impaired Driving in the Natural Environment
Description

This is a pilot study to set up a larger investigation examining predictors of the decision to drive after consuming alcohol. All participants will carry a study provided smartphone and breathalyzer device for the 2 week period of the study. The intervention is that participants are randomly assigned to one of 2 breathalyzer feedback conditions - one where they receive a warning that their results indicate they should not drive and one where they receive no feedback. The study is designed to provide information needed for a larger version with a similar protocol, but also to provide an initial test of project hypotheses as well.

An Interactive Text-Message Based Brief Intervention to Reduce Substance-Impaired Driving Among College Students
Description

Substance-Impaired Driving among college students remains a significant public health concern and may be the single riskiest substance-related outcome among young adults. Brief Interventions (BIs) have been shown to reduce alcohol-impaired driving among college students, but are not often implemented - despite their demonstrated efficacy - because it is not economically feasible for universities to hire and train staff to deliver in-person BIs to all college substance users. Very few college students seek out substance prevention or treatment services available on campus or in the surrounding community. Innovative ways of delivering BIs to this at-risk population in a manner that is both effective and economically feasible have to be developed. The present study will be the first to examine whether a text-messaging-based substance-impaired driving BI significantly decreases substance-impaired driving among colleges substance users compared to an informational control. Participants will be 150 college students who endorse driving after substance use (alcohol, drugs, and/or combined alcohol/drugs) at least twice in the past 3 months. After completing baseline measures, participants will be randomly assigned to receive either: a) substance use information, b) a substance-impaired driving personalized feedback intervention, or c) a substance-impaired driving personalized feedback intervention plus interactive text messages. Participants will complete outcome measures 3, 6, and 12 months post-intervention. Repeated measures mixed modeling analyses will be used to determine whether the intervention significantly reduces substance-impaired driving over time. The project has two specific aims: 1) to evaluate a text based substance-impaired driving intervention in a randomized clinical trial, and 2) to determine whether the use of interactive text-messages sustains intervention effects over time. This study is innovative because it utilizes cutting-edge technology to deliver the entire intervention, enabling the study to reach a large number of students in a short time period at a low cost. The study is significant because it will contribute substantially to the substance-impaired driving literature by identifying an intervention that can decrease substance-impaired driving among this high-risk population. Additionally, this study will add to the newly emerging technology-based intervention literature.

Neuroscience of Alcohol and Marijuana Impaired Driving
Description

Alcohol is one of the most widely used intoxicants. The effects of driving while intoxicated are well documented, leading to the laws and regulations behind drunk driving. Marijuana is also a commonly abused drug, whose use is increasing with widespread legalization/decriminalization in many US states and use of medical marijuana. Marijuana use is linked to cognitive impairment and is likely be the cause of intoxication-induced accidents. The effects of marijuana intoxication on driving impairments are less documented than those of alcohol. However, most marijuana users also consume alcohol when smoking cannabis, and preliminary data strongly suggest that driving impairment from both drugs used together is synergistic rather than just additive. This study will aim to investigate the brain and behavior in the same individuals, using a similar design to the current Neuroscience of Marijuana Impaired Driving and the prior Alcohol and Driving Grant, that used similar techniques and measures to quantify drunk automobile driving. We hypothesize that alcohol and marijuana use combined will lead to greater impairment in a simulated driving task, as well as other driving-related cognitive impairments. In a randomized, counterbalanced, double-blind study, we will dose participants with alcohol to a legal level of 0.05% blood alcohol content, then we will administer a moderate inhaled dose of THC marijuana or placebo marijuana, using paced inhalation that employees a vaporizer. Participants will comprise 10 regular alcohol and marijuana consumers aged 21 to 40 years of age; all participants must report smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol together. Of the 10, 5 will be occasional marijuana smokers and 5 frequent marijuana smokers. Following this dosing, we will assess impairment through cognitive testing as well as a simulated driving test through fMRI and neuropsychological tests. Samples of breath, blood and oral fluid will also be collected at multiple time points throughout the study visits to be measured for alcohol and THC concentration and its metabolites. This allows clarification between the relationship of impairment, as well as subjective and objective intoxication, and levels of THC and its metabolites in the users system.

Neuroscience of Marijuana Impaired Driving
Description

Marijuana is one of the most widely used substances. However, marijuana intoxication is not fully understood in relation to driving. This study will help the investigators learn more about the potential impairments related to marijuana intoxicated driving. A combination of MRI and neuropsychological tests (which are computer and paper/pencil tasks) will be used to measure intoxication and impairment. This study will also assess levels of marijuana in blood and saliva samples. This study takes place in Hartford, Connecticut.

Validation of Driving Simulator to Blood Alcohol Concentration Standards for Impaired Driving
Description

The proposed study will validate and determine sensitivity of our new driving simulator, created to evaluate driving ability in a related study to show similar driving performance between patients on chronic opioid treatment and a control group. Although the commercial version of the simulator has been validated for certain populations and certain measures, these require re-calibration for our own clinical study. The investigators propose a prospective randomized clinical trial to evaluate driving skills under alcohol consumption using a driving simulator. Two groups of study subjects will be utilized, with the majority (80%) receiving alcohol and placebo at different times. A smaller set of study subjects (20%) will be given placebo on both trials to evaluate learning effects and placebo blinding effectiveness. Each group will take the driving test at three time points: once as a baseline at the beginning of the study, once after the 1st dosing of the placebo and again after dosing two of the alcohol or placebo beverage. This information will allow us to evaluate driving ability under other potentially impairing conditions such as opioid usage.

Video Feedback Intervention for Cognitively Impaired Older Drivers
Description

This study will use an in-car monitoring system supplemented with video feedback to reduce the number of unsafe driving behaviors. If successful, this technology will provide a means to enhance public safety on the roads that could be adopted immediately in this at-risk group of drivers. The intervention will also maximize the time for independent driving, improving the overall quality of life of these individuals.

Examining the Role of Tolerance on Dose-dependent Effects of Acute THC on Oculomotor and Cognitive Performance
Description

The purpose of this research is to determine the extent to which oculomotor function accurately detects THC-impairment, if cannabis use experience impacts this detection threshold, and to examine how the oculomotor index corresponds to a measure of sustained attention. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subjects crossover design will be used to examine the dose-effects of THC (0, 5mg, 30mg) on oculomotor performance tasks and a sustained attention task in frequent and infrequent cannabis users. Results from the study will advance the investigators' understanding of the effect of THC and cannabis use frequency on oculomotor function and sustained attention, and will directly inform the validity of the investigators' oculomotor platform for identifying acute THC- induced impairment in frequent and infrequent users.

Increasing Seat Belt Wearing and Decreasing Handheld Phone Use While Driving
Description

The study team is proposing to conduct a randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of behavioral and financial incentives on phone use while driving and seat belt adherence. Each arm will receive a support text if their app is not collecting data. The behavioral engagement intervention includes persuasive education, mental contrasting with implementation intentions, customized habit tips, weekly feedback about participants' streaks, and encouraging SMS texts. The two financial incentive interventions add on weekly raffles or shared pots for participants with perfect streaks.

Speed of Processing Training in Adults With HIV
Description

As people age with HIV, the synergistic effects with normal age-related cognitive declines will accentuate and/or accelerate declines in cognitive functioning which can be detected as early in one's 40s. Although interventions are needed to protect/improve cognitive functioning, one intervention already exists to improve speed of processing. NINR/NIA (January 14, 2014) announced that Speed of Processing Training used in the ACTIVE Study (N = 2,802 community-dwelling older adults) has the ability to enable "older people to maintain their cognitive abilities as they age" even 10 years after training. As shown in the ACTIVE Study, this intervention uniquely improves driving, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), health-related quality of life, self-rated health, internal locus of control, and protects one from depression; these represent areas of needed intervention for adults with HIV as well. In adults with HIV, previous pilot studies likewise indicate speed of processing declines are associated with poorer driving simulator performance and more self-reported at-fault automobile crashes; such speed of processing declines on driving alone represent a significant public health concern. These studies also demonstrated that Speed of Processing Training improved this cognitive ability and translated into improved performance on a timed measure of IADLs. Based on prior research, this RCT proposal consists of a pre-post two-year longitudinal experimental design whereby 264 adults with HIV, 40+ years and diagnosed with HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder, will be randomly assigned to one of three training conditions: 1) 10 hours of laboratory-based Speed of Processing Training, 2) 20 hours of laboratory-based Speed of Processing Training, or 3) 10 hours of a standardized computer-contact control (sham) condition. AIM 1: Determine whether 10 vs 20 hours of speed of processing training will improve this cognitive ability at post-test, year 1, and year 2 after baseline. AIM 2: Determine whether 10 vs 20 hours of speed of processing training will improve everyday functioning at post-test, year 1, and year 2 after baseline. Exploratory AIM: Determine whether improvement in speed in speed of processing and/or everyday functioning over time mediate improvement quality of life (e.g., depression, health related quality of life).

Fire Fighter Fatigue Management Program: Operation Healthy Sleep
Description

Firefighters work some of the most demanding schedules known under highly stressful and demanding conditions. The need to work frequent extended shifts and long work weeks leads to acute and chronic partial sleep deprivation as well as misalignment of circadian phase. Sleep disorders are common, costly, and treatable, but often remain undiagnosed and untreated and it is likely that a significant proportion of firefighters suffer from undiagnosed sleep disorders which will further impair their sleep and exacerbate fatigue.In the current proposal, we aim to address the health, performance and safety issues related to fatigue in firefighters and test the effectiveness of a Comprehensive Firefighter Fatigue Management Program (CFFMP) that we have termed 'Operation Healthy Sleep.'

Fire Fighter Fatigue Management Program: Operation Fight Fatigue
Description

Firefighters frequently work extended duration shifts and long work weeks which have adverse effects on alertness, health, safety and performance. This protocol uses a survey instrument to examine the effects of extended duration shifts on safety outcomes (e.g., motor vehicle crashes, accidents, injuries), health (e.g., diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, improved general health indices, decreased number of sick days), and performance (e.g., decreased response time). This study will expand understanding of the nature, scope, etiology and consequences of firefighter fatigue and increase our ability to develop guidelines that can be generalized across fire departments throughout North America. This study could provide an avenue to make lasting policy improvements that could enhance the safety, health, and performance of firefighters.

Assess the Effect of Metaxalone 640 mg (M640) Compared to Tizanidine 8 mg on Truck Driving Ability and Cognition

Every participant will receive active study drug and one (1 )comparator, in two (2) stages, one after the other. Each drug will be taken one (1) time after a high fat meal. Vital signs and discussion of medications, illness or injury are considered safety assessments and will be discussed at every visit. There will be ( four (4) visits.

Cannabis Consumption and Driving Impairment Assessment on a Closed Course
Description

In a true experiment, roughly 300 volunteer participants will smoke active cannabis, a corresponding placebo, or no substance at all (control). Next, participants will complete a drive test and then be observed by actual California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers who will attempt to classify participants as impaired or unimpaired. CHP Officers will evaluate participants in the context of driving (i.e., while following participants in an actual patrol car), as part of a roadside behavioral assessment (i.e., the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, or ARIDE, battery, which includes Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, or SFSTs), and as part of a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation conducted indoors.

The Impact and Detection of Driving Impairments Associated With Acute Cannabis Smoking
Description

This study was authorized by the California Legislature (Assembly Bill 266, the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act to help with detection of driving under the influence of cannabis. One hundred and eighty healthy volunteers will inhale smoked cannabis with either 0% (placebo), 5.9%, or 13.4% Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at the beginning of the day, and then complete driving simulations, iPad-based performance assessments, and bodily fluid draws (e.g., blood, saliva, breath) before the cannabis smoking and a number of times over the subsequent 6 hours after cannabis smoking. The purpose is to determine (1) the relationship of the dose of Δ9-THC on driving performance and (2) the duration of driving impairment in terms of hours from initial use, (3) if saliva or expired air can serve as a useful substitute for blood sampling of Δ9-THC, and (4) if testing using an iPad can serve as a useful adjunct to the standardized field sobriety test in identifying acute impairment from cannabis.

Smartphone-paired Breathalyzers and Loss- and Gain-framed Texts for Reducing Drinking and Driving
Description

This project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a scalable behavioral intervention using smartphone-paired breathalyzers and text message aimed at reducing drinking and driving among individuals who report heavy drinking. All participants receive a smartphone breathalyzer to provide feedback on their estimated blood alcohol level. The intervention compares loss- and gain-framed messages that make the consequences of drinking and driving more salient to standard messages not to drink and drive.

Cannabis Impairment Detection Application (CIDA)
Description

Subjects will participate in a 4-visit study protocol in which they will be asked to complete a set of computerized tasks and a 45-minute simulated drive in a driving simulator. Subjects will be administered marijuana of varying pre-determined concentrations of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) during 3 of the visits and alcohol during one of the visits. Throughout the duration of each visit, brain activity will be measured noninvasively using an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset. The purpose of this study is to: 1. Further understand the effects of acute cannabis intoxication on driving performance in a driving simulator 2. Develop and refine brain-based biomarkers of impairment due to acute cannabis intoxication

High Confusion: Cannabis & Driving
Description

This study is being done to assess the feasibility of administrating Δ9-THC and Δ8-THC isolates and simultaneously adopting several data harmonization measures to generate uniquely translatable data. This project aims to (1) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of administering ∆9-THC and Δ8-THC isolates using standardized cannabis dosing units to quantify ∆9-THC and Δ8-THC pharmacokinetics; and (2) evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of adopting standardized impairment detection methods and driving performance definitions and measures on quantifying ∆9-THC and Δ8-THC driving impairment compared to a placebo.

Detection of Cannabis Impairment With ISBRG's SpotLight-THC
Description

Subjects will participate in a 2-visit study protocol in which they will be administered cannabis of pre-determined concentrations and asked to complete a simulated drive in a driving simulator. Subjects will be scanned on two SpotLight-THC (Alpha and Beta iterations) devices and peripheral venous whole blood will be collected from subjects for analysis on up to four occasions on each visit. The purpose of the investigation will be to determine whether the SpotLight-THC device is a reliable measure of THC impairment at the roadside, with an objective to identify a unique blood analyte architecture for THC impairment using near infrared light and machine learning.
