11 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
This study is a randomized controlled trial assessing the effectiveness in a series of educational text messages in improving continuation of a birth control method in comparison to the 'standard counseling', when girls initiate a new method of birth control. Girls aged 15-19 year olds who are attending for a reproductive health visit and who own a working cell phone will be approached and asked if they would like to participate. Following completion of a baseline questionnaire and consultation for initiation of a new birth control method they will be randomized to receive either the intervention or standard counseling. If randomized to the intervention they will receive 3 messages per week for the initial 3 weeks, 2 messages per week for the following 5 weeks and then one message per week thereafter. Messages will be tailored to the birth control method the participant has initiated. At 4 months all participants will be contacted via telephone and asked to complete a questionnaire regarding continuation of use.
The investigators are conducting a research study to understand how cells responsible for fighting infection (immune cells) are affected by hormonal contraceptive use. The investigators hypothesize that progestin-containing hormonal contraceptives (i.e., Depo-Provera) inhibit host response to infection. To test this hypothesis, the investigators will collect blood and genital tract samples from women before and after their initiation of a hormonal contraceptive (either birth control pills, Depo-Provera, or Mirena).
Many female adolescents using the pediatric emergency department (ED) are at higher risk for unintended pregnancy. This is a significant public health issue and hormonal contraception is the mainstay of prevention. Many barriers to hormonal contraception exist and other studies have demonstrated that referral from the ED for hormonal contraception leads to poor follow up. This study will be a pilot study to assess the feasibility of initiating hormonal contraception in the pediatric ED.
This is a randomized, controlled trial investigating whether immediate versus standard, "Sunday Start", initiation of transdermal hormonal contraception (the patch) in post-abortion subjects can improve compliance and the continuation of contraception. Immediate initiation of the patch has been studied in women seeking contraception when they are not immediately post-abortion, and this "Quick Start" method has been shown to improve the continuation of the patch into a second month. The primary hypothesis of this study is that immediate initiation of the patch in post-abortal women will improve the continuation of contraception over delayed initiation on the first Sunday after an abortion.
This multi-site study is employing a brief contraception counseling intervention in the Emergency Department (ED) to shed light on factors that affect decision making as well as barriers and facilitators to conception initiation in the Emergency Department (ED) setting. The overarching goal of the study is to reduce unintended pregnancy among females ages 15 to 18 who present to the Emergency Department (ED).
This pilot study is being performed to investigate the influence that starting contraception with an IUD has on the local immune cell populations and features, with a particular focus on the cells and cell-surface features that are important in HIV transmission (CD4 cells and CCR5 cell receptors). Based on results from large epidemiologic studies there seems to be a consistent finding of slightly increased HIV acquisition in women who use hormonal contraception. It is not clear if this is due to a biological phenomenon or if it relates to a difference in sexual behaviors/risks of women on hormonal contraceptives. The study hypothesis is that CD4 cells and CCR5 HIV-tropic receptor density increases within the upper and lower genital tract of women 2 months after placement of progestin-containing intrauterine devices for contraception as compared with women not using hormonal contraception.
Women who choose to take birth control pills are currently instructed to begin taking the pills at the end of a menstrual cycle. This creates a window of time between when the woman is given the pills and when she begins taking them. Some women fail to begin taking the pills, placing them at increased risk of pregnancy. This study will evaluate a new approach to beginning birth control pills. Women will take the first pill in the doctor's office rather than waiting until the next menstrual cycle.
This is a study for clients presenting for emergency contraception (EC). EC is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. Clients presenting for EC may be offered either the copper or hormonal IUD or oral EC. Current guidelines allow for same-day implant initiation at the time of an EC encounter, as long as oral LNG EC is co-administered. This study will look at pregnancy rates and clients willingness to receive same-day implant + oral EC and same-day IUDs.
The current postpartum care model of a single visit 4-6 weeks after delivery does not optimally address contraceptive needs. By this visit, many women have resumed sexual activity, potentially putting them at risk for unintended and rapid repeat pregnancy. In addition, many women with pregnancy-related Medicaid lose insurance coverage at this time, making it difficult to obtain long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) if desired. Therefore, an earlier postpartum visit may remove barriers to improve access to LARC thereby, reducing unintended and rapid repeat pregnancy. Our primary objective is to determine whether an additional 3-week postpartum visit, compared to usual postpartum care, will affect the initiation of LARC by 6 weeks postpartum.
We hypothesize that using "quick start" initiation of the contraceptive vaginal ring in adolescents seeking birth control will improve compliance compared to traditional start. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial comparing "quick start" to traditional start initiation of the contraceptive vaginal ring in adolescents seeking birth control. The primary study outcome is method continuation at 3, 6, and 12 months. Secondary outcomes include abnormal bleeding, product satisfaction, and adverse events.

Immediate initiation of OCPs has been studied in women seeking contraception when they are not immediately post-abortion, and this "Quick Start" method has been shown to improve the continuation of OCPs into a second pill pack. The primary hypothesis of this study is that immediate initiation of OCPs in post-abortal women will improve the continuation of contraception over delayed initiation on the first Sunday after an abortion.
