Sleep and Cardiovascular Health in Adolescence
Description

Insomnia is a prevalent and under-recognized disorder in adolescence, particularly in girls, with long-term repercussions for mental and physical health. This study assesses manifestation of autonomic hyperarousal and vulnerability to insomnia using a sample of male and female adolescents with and without Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) Insomnia Disorder. Outcomes from this study have the potential to inform prevention and treatment interventions for insomnia that can be implemented at a young age before chronic negative sequelae of this common disorder manifest.

Comorbid Insomnia and Sleep Disordered Breathing in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Rehabilitation
Description

The purpose of this research is to determine how frequently sleep disorders such as sleep disordered breathing and insomnia occur in patients with coronary artery disease enrolled in cardiac rehabilitation. By reviewing results of a variety of tests, we also hope to learn more about the cardiovascular effects on people who may have these conditions.

Validating the Use of a Subjectively Reported Sleep Vital Sign
Description

Sleep disorders are commonly under-recognized in the primary care setting and available screening tools are often are limited. The study inestigators hypothesize that the use of a novel subjective sleep vital sign (VS) will improve recognition of patients with sleep disorders and can be utilized to track outcomes to sleep therapy.

Blue Wavelength Light-blocking Glasses in ADHD-Insomnia
Description

Patients with ADHD often report staying up late on the computer, watching TV, or using other electronic devices, all strong emitters of blue light which may be contributing to the delayed sleep onset times seen in some of these patients. Evening use of polarizing glasses which filter out blue light may decrease the contribution of environmental light late at night to delayed bedtime. This is a treatment that Dr. Fargason uses when patients do not want to use sleep medication to help them fall asleep. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment by use of sleep diaries and sleep questionnaires.
