Description

PrEvention of posttraumatic contractuRes with Ketotifen 2 (PERK 2) is a Phase III randomized, controlled, double blinded multicenter trial with 3 parallel groups (Ketotifen 2 mg or 5 mg or lactose placebo twice daily orally for 6 weeks) and a primary endpoint of elbow extension-flexion range of motion (ROM) arc at 12 weeks post-randomization.

Ablative Fractional Laser for Sclerotic GVHD-Associated Joint Contractures
Description

Graft versus host disease (GVHD) is a common complication of allogeneic stem cell transplant.Chronic GVHD is characterized by skin thickening and tightening. Advanced sclerosis can lead to reduced range of motion and incapacitating joint contractures. Once present, there are few therapeutic options. We will treat sclerosis and limb contractures with an ablative fractional laser, a device FDA-approved for scar treatment. This approach has successfully treated contracturesdue to burn scars.

Effect of Mobilization With Movement on Weight Bearing Ankle Dorsiflexion Range of Motion
Description

Limited ankle range of motion is associated with increased risk for ankle sprains, knee joint dysfunction and injury to the ACL. Therefore, it is important that researchers and clinicians understand the best treatment options to increase ankle range of motion for injury prevention. We are recruiting adults with limited ankle range of motion who are lacking current ankle injuries for a treatment investigation. All study procedures will occur on the campus of the University of South Carolina by a licensed Physical Therapist and experienced researcher.

Efficacy of Strength Training in Improving Elbow Range of Motion and Function in Adults With Hemophilia
Description

This is a research study of adults with hemophilia that have limitations in elbow joint motion that is the result of bleeding into the joint. People with hemophilia who have bleeding into their elbow joint may have limitations in elbow joint movement and pain in the joint. This research is being done to determine the effect a strength training program has on the amount of movement people with hemophilia and elbow joint disease have.

Synovial Fluid Analysis of Intraarticular Elbow Fracture
Description

The objective of this study is to obtain and compare bilateral elbow joint synovial fluid from patients with unilateral intraarticular elbow fracture and a contralateral healthy appearing elbow joint. The synovial fluid samples will undergo several forms of analysis for metabolites and proteins. Matched-pair statistical analysis will be performed to determine the metabolites and proteins that may play the greatest role in development of joint contracture.

Description

Loss of elbow range of motion can significantly affect activities of daily living. Measuring elbow range of motion is critical for tracking post surgical outcomes. This study seeks to validate the ability to validate self photography as a means of followup through long distance correspondence.

Joint Range of Motion in Burn Scars
Description

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between cutaneous functional unit(CFU)recruitment throughout the available active range of motion of a prescribed joint in normal subjects and patients with burn scars. Specifically, this study will determine if differences in CFU recruitment exist between normal subjects and individuals with burn scars at the dorsal hand, dorsal or volar forearm, or anterior or posterior arm during active range of motion of the MCP joint during flexion, or the wrist or elbow during flexion or extension, respectively.

Novel Splinting Technique Using 3D Models
Description

The purpose of the study is to determine the feasibility of a non-contact custom splint fabrication method for patients with chronic diseases suffering from hypersensitive skin or compromised skin integrity. Custom splinting by occupational therapists involves molding low-temperature thermoplastic material directly on patients' skin; however, skin sensitivity is a contraindication for splint fabrication. The study aims to recruit 10 male or female patients with either a diagnosis of scleroderma (SSc) or arthritis. A scan of the patient's hand and a 3D printer will be used to create a precise model of a patient's hand on which a custom splint will be fabricated. By taking this approach, traditional splinting is substituted by avoiding direct contact with the material on the surface of the patient's upper extremity. This technique creates therapeutic opportunities for underserved patients by expanding splinting options for patients with scleroderma and arthritis, and addressing the challenges associated with managing chronic diseases.
