Incentive-based and Media Literacy Informed Approaches to Improve Vaping Cessation
Description

This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and compare the preliminary effect of vaping cessation program consisting of media literacy education and real-time text messaging support and leverage insights from behavioral economics to enhance social and financial incentives to improve program engagement, and eventually abstinence. Our hypotheses are that 1) the Combined arm is associated with improved vaping abstinence to the Media literacy and Financial incentive arms; and 2) the financial incentive-related arms (either Combined or Financial incentive) enhance engagement compared to the non-incentive related arms.

Interactive Technology for Media Literacy Drug Prevention in Community Groups
Description

This Phase II STTR will evaluate an interactive, self-paced, e-learning media literacy intervention, REAL media, to prevent youth substance use among youth in the 4-H organization. Participating 4-H clubs will be randomly assigned to use the curriculum or continue current practices with the option for delivery at the end of the study. 4-H members (ages 13-15) will complete a pretest, immediate posttest and follow-up posttests at 3 and 9 months to assess effects.

The purpose of this study is to conduct a randomized controlled trial of a media literacy education program for middle school students with the goal of enhancing decision-making skills to prevent early and risky sexual behavior and teen pregnancy, and encourage healthy relationships.

The purpose of this project is to determine if a 3-session anti-smoking media literacy based intervention is more effective that a standard 3-session anti-smoking media literacy intervention at changing students' intention to smoke, actual smoking behavior, attitudes and norms regarding smoking, and level of media literacy.

Cancer Prevention for Young Rural Adults
Description

Young adults aged 18-26 engage in a number of behaviors that increase their risk of developing cancer later in life including sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating, nicotine produce us, heavy drinking of alcohol, increased UV exposure, and incomplete uptake of HPV vaccination. A multi-risk factor campaign will be developed to reduce these cancer risk behaviors and delivered to young adults over social media, a popular channel that can reach nearly all young adults. The campaign will be evaluated for effectiveness in a rigorous randomized trial with measures of moderate to vigorous physical activity, healthy eating patterns, nicotine product use, alcohol intake, sunburn prevalence, and HPV vaccination uptake.

Young Men and Media Study
Description

Adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM) continue to account for a disproportionate number of HIV infections in the United States. Racial and ethnic minority populations are particularly affected. Increased HIV rates reflect sexual risk behaviors during early sexual experiences. Research suggests that initial sexual risk-taking occurs during adolescence among sexual minority males. Therefore, it is important for HIV prevention interventions to target adolescent sexual minority males. Targeting sexual minority males during adolescence will help them learn and establish healthy sexual behaviors early in their psychosexual development, which will have both immediate and long-term health benefits.To promote adolescent sexual minority males' critical examination of online media and decrease their sexual risk-taking, this study proposes an exploratory clinical trial to pilot test an online sexual health media literacy intervention that was developed during formative research for feasibility and acceptability. Overall, the proposed research has the potential to reach a wide audience of sexual minority males early in their sexual development, ultimately decreasing their sexual risk-taking and reducing the number of new HIV infections in this population.

Evaluation Study of the Online High School Media Aware Program
Description

The main aim of this study is to conduct a pretest-posttest RCT with a three-month follow-up to investigate the sustainability of outcomes in students who use the Media Aware program. Media Aware, a web-based media literacy education program for high school students to promote sexual and relationship health. Media Aware is designed to provide high school students with sexual health knowledge, media literacy skills, and the skills to make healthy decisions about sexual activity. This study will examine if behavioral indicators among students in the intervention group sustain, emerge, or diminish over time compared to students in the delayed intervention group.

Cancer patients are presented with a lot of information about their diagnosis and different treatment options, which can be confusing. The purpose of this study is to see if a simple video explanation of six words used to describe cancer treatment improves patient understanding of these words.

Literacy Instruction Through Media for Everyone
Description

The goal of this study is to determine whether an intervention to support caregivers in engaging with their children while using educational media together can improve children's early literacy skills, compared to an aligned shared book reading intervention and to no intervention. Given that early literacy skills predict children's later academic learning, this home intervention, which aims to shape the communication patterns surrounding a common, family-friendly activity, has the potential to positively influence the trajectory of low income children's academic success. The investigators propose that amedia based activity will reduce barriers and increase adherence therefore increasing literacy skills over time.

Middle Ear Disease Before Age 3, Treatment With Ear Tubes, and Literacy and Attentional Abilities at Ages 9 to 11
Description

Middle-ear disease (infection and fluid) is the most common illness in young children after the common cold. Because hearing loss accompanies middle-ear disease, and because early life is a period of rapid development, concern has existed that sustained periods of middle-ear disease might cause lasting impairments of learning, speech development, language development, or behavior and social adjustment. Earlier phases of this research found that the insertion of ear tubes in children younger than 3 years of age with persistent middle-ear disease did not affect their development at 3, 4, or 6 years of age. This study examines the children's literacy, attention, and related abilities at 9 to 11 years of age.

Health Care Transition Readiness Short-Form Video Intervention
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to assess whether social-media style short-form health education videos can increase health care transition readiness, self-efficacy, emotional well-being, health literacy, and appointment attendance, compared with publicly available health education resources in adolescents with chronic illnesses. The main question it aims to answer is: -Hypothesize social media intervention will increase health care transition readiness, self-efficacy, emotional well-being, health literacy, and appointment attendance compared to publicly available health education website immediately post intervention and at 6 month follow up. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of the interventions and access the intervention for 20 minutes and complete 30-60 minutes of surveys.
