The purpose of this study is to understand how different types of community-based mental health care affect thinking abilities, daily functioning, and brain activity in adults with schizophrenia and related conditions. The investigators are especially interested in learning whether the Clubhouse Model-a structured, supportive community for individuals with mental illness-has unique benefits compared to standard outpatient mental health services. If participants decide to join, they will be asked to complete a total of six study visits with the research team over the course of your participation. Three of these study visits are at the beginning (baseline) and the remaining three are six months later. Two of the three visits will includes interviews, questionnaires, and thinking and memory tasks (cognitive testing) and one session will be an MRI brain scan, which is a safe and non-invasive imaging procedure. The total time required for each visit will be approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Participants may take breaks as needed.
The objectives of this study are to determine if the 'Teams Engaged in Accessible Mental Health Interventions for Lupus Erythematosus and Dermatomyositis Stress' (TEAM-LEADS) intervention is feasible and acceptable to adolescents and young adults with lupus and dermatomyositis and whether it can help reduce stress and promote cardiovascular health behaviors in these individuals.

Adapt for Life is a mental health and wellbeing program designed to help young people develop healthy behaviors and important life skills to manage stress and mental health challenges. The program is a collaboration between Adapt for Life and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Purpose of the Study: The primary purpose of the Adapt for Life study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the ADAPT framework in improving mental health outcomes for students. The framework includes steps such as Ask, Describe, Assess, Plan, and Talk, which are designed to help students tackle stress during everyday moments or in times of crisis. Question the Study is Trying to Answer: The study seeks to answer whether the ADAPT framework can significantly improve students' ability to manage stress, recognize mental health issues, and seek appropriate help. It aims to determine if the program can reduce instances of harmful behaviors and improve overall mental wellbeing among participants.
The purpose of this research study is to refine customized in-app notifications in order to optimize users' experience with a mobile app called Wysa for Chronic Pain. This app is designed to support people who have chronic pain and who also experience symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. This version of the app is not currently available to the public. Eligible participants will be asked to download and use the Wysa for Chronic Pain study app for several weeks, and to use it as they normally would if they were not part of a research study. At the beginning and end of the study period, participants will be asked to complete brief surveys about their mood, pain, physical function, and sleep. Additionally, a few participants will be asked to share their experience with the study app at the end of the research study in a casual interview using a secure audio/video recorded call. Participating in the interview portion is optional.
This study aims to pilot a group-level intervention focused on mental health and resilience among Ethiopian and Eritrean youth. The study follows previous work that showed high rates of mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)) among Ethiopian and Eritrean youth in Atlanta. The goal is to determine the acceptability, feasibility, and safety of this culturally relevant group-level intervention before a larger trial to improve resilience processes that support mental wellness in a community-based setting.
Mothers of preterm infants experience exaggerated emotional stressors compared to those typically associated with new motherhood, making these women particularly vulnerable to postpartum depression. As many as 70% of mothers of preterm infants experience postpartum depression compared to only 12.5% of those delivering full-term infants. Increased stress and depression during this critical period are detrimental because they hamper a mother's ability to care for her infant and are associated with increased neonatal sepsis and mortality, decreased neonatal growth, and delayed motor and cognitive development. Postpartum depression is also associated with excessive maternal weight gain and risk for metabolic diseases, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Stress in breastfeeding mothers can also alter circulating concentrations of some bioactive components (e.g., immunoglobulins, cortisol) that can transfer into milk. As such, understanding factors predisposing these vulnerable women to extreme levels of stress and finding ways to lower this stress and lessen its negative health outcomes on mothers and infants are important public health challenges. The March of Dimes estimates that 8.5% of births in Idaho are preterm, making this topic particularly relevant for Idaho women. Risk factors for postpartum depression in mothers delivering term or preterm infants are complex, but maternal nutrient deficiencies may be involved. Vitamin D status, for instance, is inversely correlated with risk of postpartum depression in women delivering term infants. However, vitamin D interventions have yielded inconsistent results, perhaps due to confounding impacts of geographic location, skin color, and endogenous vitamin D synthesis. Endogenous vitamin D synthesis requires cutaneous sunlight exposure, placing Idaho women at even greater risk of vitamin D deficiency - particularly in the winter when days are extremely short (only 7 hr on the winter solstice). The impact of maternal vitamin D supplementation during lactation on infant variables (e.g., vitamin D status) has been examined. However, its effect on maternal mental health has not been rigorously studied - let alone in the 'frontier and remote' (FAR) rural West, including Idaho, with short periods of wintertime sunlight and poor access to healthcare. Our long term goal is to develop interventions to improve maternal and infant health in Idaho - particularly in the context of preterm births. The overall primary objective of this proposal is to determine if maternal vitamin D supplementation improves vitamin D status and mental health in Idahoan mothers of preterm infants. Our central hypothesis is that vitamin D supplementation improves vitamin D status and reduces stress and other indicators of poor postpartum maternal mental health in Idaho women delivering preterm infants. Secondarily, we will assess the effects of maternal vitamin D supplementation on human milk composition.
This proposal will address financial wellbeing, an often overlooked but important factor impacting reentry for justice-involved people with mental health challenges, who are disproportionately Black and Latine. The project will change community level determinants by integrating financial capability support (one-on-one coaching and access to financial tools and services) into existing services and training bank and credit union staff to reduce discrimination. It will also support collaborative community efforts working towards upstream policy and legal reforms to reduce the incidence of those financial challenges.
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if the Social-emotional Skills for Thriving and Relating at School (SSTRS) Program can help children entering kindergarten and their families. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1) Do children who participate in SSTRS have better social-emotional skills and mental health? and 2) Do parents who participate in SSTRS have more positive parenting skills and involvement in their children's learning? Researchers will compare the SSTRS Program to the regular kindergarten curriculum without SSTRS to see if being in SSTRS helps children to have better mental health and parents to have better parenting skills. Kindergarteners will have daily SSTRS lessons in their kindergarten classes for 8 weeks. Their parents will watch videos and attend group meetings with other parents and answer questions about their own and their children's behaviors and mental health
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether a single dose of ketamine during surgery can help lower pain, reduce the need for opioid medications, and improve mental health recovery in adults with serious orthopedic injuries. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does ketamine lower pain after surgery? Does ketamine help reduce how much opioid medicine participants need? Does ketamine improve symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? Researchers will compare participants who receive ketamine during surgery to those who receive standard anesthesia without ketamine. Participants will: Receive either ketamine or standard anesthesia during surgery Answer survey questions about pain, depression, and PTSD at several points after surgery (from a few days up to 6 months) Be followed by the research team through clinic visits and phone calls
The investigators suggest a multi-step approach to improve access to mental health care for minority groups. The plan focuses on three goals: increasing diversity in the mental health workforce, bringing more expertise into the community, and strengthening the community's ability to address the factors that impact mental health. To do this, the TEACH study team will work with students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups at a minority-serving school. Students will be provided the opportunity to obtain their CHW Certification while receiving course credit for their degree. Students will then be eligible to participate in an internship to utilize their skills. The TEACH study team will help these students with their training, supervision, and ongoing support. These students will then be able to work with their communities to tackle common mental health issues and the social factors that contribute to those problems.
This research study is being conducted to understand if patients benefit from mobile health interventions while waiting for in-clinic mental health treatments.
This study will explore how exercise affects brain chemicals called endocannabinoids, which may improve thinking skills and reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and low mood in children and teens aged 9 to 17. Participants will take part in a single 30-minute activity session, where they will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1. Moderate-intensity exercise (walking or running on a treadmill at 50-70% of their maximum heart rate). 2. Light stretching (gentle movements at less than 40% of their maximum heart rate). 3. Seated meditation (relaxing without movement at less than 30% of their maximum heart rate). The investigators will measure endocannabinoid levels, thinking skills, and mood before and after the activity to see how these activities affect the brain and emotions.
This study provides substance use and mental health peer support services to address behavioral health disparities in rural areas. Specifically, the project aims to address persistent mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, that become barriers to care for patients working towards long-term recovery from co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Participants will be assessed and evaluated for opioid use disorder (OUD), social determinants of health (SDoH), and infectious diseases by a nurse practitioner and a social worker. A certified peer support specialist (CPSS) will provide additional support, connecting patients to sustainable mental health resources and implementing a modified version of the Friendship Bench intervention, which involves six weekly 45-minute problem-solving therapy sessions with the option to participate in six or more peer support sessions. The CPSS will follow the patient for up to 12 weeks.
This study investigates whether AI-driven analysis of speech can accurately predict clinical diagnoses and assess risk for various mental or behavioral health conditions, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and schizophrenia. We aim to develop tools that can support clinicians in making more accurate and efficient diagnoses.
This clinical trial studies the effect of respiratory training for enhancing brain and mental health among patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and cancer (along with their caregivers). The relationship between respiration, cardiovascular effects in the brain, mental health, and neurophysiological mechanisms are significant for patient populations facing complex health challenges, such as those with cancer and neurodegenerative disease, and their caregivers. By measuring oxygen delivery to brain tissues and cerebrospinal fluid flow, this trial may help researchers investigate the potential benefits of respiratory training for patients with MS and cancer and their caregivers.
This longitudinal study is designed to test bidirectional relationships between preteen girls' mental health and social media experiences. We will explore how pubertal development and experiences of rejection influence these relationships.
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if this intervention (Social Skills, Problem Solving, emotion Regulation, and psycho-Education on Trauma: A Trauma-Informed Peer Aggression and Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program; SPARE) can treat peer aggression and prevent teen dating violence in preteens receiving intensive mental health services. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Does receiving SPARE reduce proactive and reactive aggression at post-intervention and 3- and 9-month follow-ups? * Does receiving SPARE reduce positive attitude about TDV, prevent TDV behaviors, and improve mental health outcomes at post-intervention and 3- and 9-month follow-ups? Researchers will compare youth receiving SPARE to youth receiving treatment as usual to see if SPARE results in improved proactive and reactive aggression, TDV attitudes and behaviors, and mental health outcomes. Participants will: * Receive SPARE via group therapy incorporated into their daily programing at an intensive mental health program * Complete study questionnaires at program intake and discharge as well as at 3-month and 9-month follow-up assessments
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect that melatonin lotion has on sleep quality, the nervous system, and mental health. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the brain that regulates sleep and might improve depression and anxiety symptoms. The goal is to determine whether melatonin in lotion form is an effective treatment for young adults with inadequate sleep and might improve mental health. Participants will fill out surveys, wear an actigraph (a wrist-worn device that measures sleep), wear a heart rate monitor (a strap worn around one's chest), and provide nightly saliva samples during treatment weeks. In one of the two treatment weeks, participants will receive a lotion that contains melatonin. During the other week they will receive a control treatment that will be lotion with no melatonin, and there will be a week in between with no treatment at all.
The goal of this SBIR is to develop and test Assist-MH, a new interactive digital support system for SMH providers. Assist-MH will offer an innovative interactive planning tool to help providers create a treatment plan customized to the student's specific needs. Based on inputs, the system will generate both provider-led MH strategies to optimize time spent with the student and self-paced digital strategies (video, game-based, interactive) for students to augment in-person treatment and provide unique between-session learning and practice. SMH providers will use Assist-MH to plan and assign individualized MH strategies as well as monitor student progress over time (completion and MH functioning).
This study is testing the acceptability and efficacy of an AI enabled mental health chatbot (Elomia) as a resource of college student wellness.
Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic many youth are experiencing declines in physical activity and worsening mental health (e.g., depression symptoms). These declines are exacerbated among underserved youth who experience greater barriers to health services and exposure to life stressors that put them at increased risk for impaired mental, emotional, and behavioral health. School-based afterschool programming is an important strategy to reach this population of youth and provides intervention at a time when youth are likely to otherwise be in environments not supportive of health. Further participation in extracurricular activities has been shown to be a protective factor for youth mental health. However, consistent with the Behavioral Theory of Depression, youth who are currently inactive and who have depression symptoms are unlikely to participate in afterschool programming on their own and likely require heightened positive reinforcement when they do attend to encourage retention. Given the high prevalence of youth who experience symptoms of depression and resource and staffing challenges faced by many schools, the level of support needed to engage students to consistently participate and benefit from afterschool programming is often beyond the capacity of school-based afterschool programs. In partnership with a local afterschool program for middle school students in a low resource community, we developed an augmented version of the current afterschool program in which college students are trained to mentor and assist in the afterschool program, expanding the capacity of the afterschool program to engage students. The mentoring intervention uses behavioral activation principles to help youth connect their behaviors with their mood and support youth to engage in behaviors that improve their mood, including physical activity. The main purpose of this study is to pilot the feasibility of the newly developed intervention.
In this trial, the investigators will examine the uptake of the evidenced-based IDEAL Goals program, a heart disease risk reduction program, while testing different implementation strategies with our partners in Michigan and Maryland who serve persons with serious mental illness (SMI).
An interest in cold-water immersion (CWI) to elicit diverse physiological effects has been prevalent for centuries. CWI typically consists of bodily exposure to water at temperatures ranging from 5-10º C for various durations. CWI has profound cultural significance in different areas of the world, such as in Scandinavian countries, and has emerged as a popular modality for its purported health-promoting effects. Individuals on social media have repeatedly advocated for CWI as a method to improve muscular recovery, enhance sleep, and increase immune and cognitive function. Because of this, companies that specialize in cold tub production have become popularized; however, individuals who are seeking a more cost-effective option are drawn toward cold showers for their preferred method of cold exposure. Despite the scarcity of rigorous research investigating the difference in effects of cold tub versus cold shower CWI, individuals on social media promoting CWI via a shower continue to praise its comparable benefits to that of a tub. Therefore, investigations of chronic CWI (utilizing both a cold tub and a cold shower) is vital. Thus, the purpose of the proposed study is to explore the varying effects of chronic CWI on neural and cognitive function using a cold tub and a cold shower. Further, the study aims to investigate performance measures and immune measures to create a comprehensive understanding of CWI's implications on human physiology over time. The investigators hypothesize measures relating to mental performance and health will improve after 4-weeks of CWI, and there will be no difference between tub and shower immersion groups.
We will study the impacts of offering access to an emotional well-being phone app to Hispanic U.S. immigrants in psychological distress. Our primary outcome is participants' psychological well-being.
This project aims to follow up on a prior project examining the impact of training therapists in an executive functioning intervention Unstuck and On Target (UOT) adapted for community mental health settings. Study aims are to test the clinical and implementation effectiveness of training mental health therapists in Unstuck and On Target, an executive functioning intervention, relative to Unified Protocol for Children, a transdiagnostic intervention for emotional disorders. This includes examining the implementation of Unstuck and associated outcomes (e.g., effective delivery, expanded use of Unstuck beyond autism, the feasibility of Unstuck) and impact on changes in child executive functioning and behaviors.
This study focuses on the mental health challenges faced by the World Trade Center's (WTC) General Responders due to the severe psychological trauma from the WTC collapse. PTSD and depression are among the top mental health conditions affecting these responders. Many members of the WTC Health Program (WTCHP) have relocated to Florida, making up nearly six percent of the cohort. Furthermore, many identify as Latinx, highlighting the need for services in their preferred language to promote health equity. Studies have shown that remotely-delivered, clinician-supported applications (apps) can reduce adverse MH symptoms. PTSD Coach was developed by the Veteran's Administration as a self-managed mobile app and is available at no cost for Android and Apple devices. The primary focus of PTSD Coach is on managing PTSD symptoms. The app offers coping tools such as relaxation exercises and calming self-talk and effective sleep hygiene practices when needed. A recent review evaluated the self-managed PTSD Coach app and found it to be feasible, acceptable, and effective in reducing PTSD symptoms. Clinician-Supported PTSD Coach was developed as a brief intervention for Veterans who were unlikely to use a mobile app on their own. Clinician Supported PTSD Coach combines PTSD Coach mobile app with four remotely-delivered 20-30 minute sessions over 8 weeks with a clinician. Studies with Veterans have reported significant reductions in PTSD and depression symptoms, treatment satisfaction and more treatment sessions attended, when compared with typical mental health care. While promising, none of these studies included WTC General Responders or focused on Latinx populations. Given the promise of these interventions, and the need to provide support for geographically dispersed General Responders in Florida, this study aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of Clinician Supported PTSD Coach in reducing symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances among English and Spanish-speaking WTC General Responders. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three conditions: 1. Clinician-Supported PTSD Coach 2. Self-Managed PTSD Coach 3. Waitlist Control (no treatment until after follow-up) Assessments will be conducted at the end of treatment (8 weeks) and at follow-up (12 weeks). The study will measure reductions in PTSD, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances at 8 weeks and 12 weeks. It is expected that both Clinician Supported PTSD Coach and Self-Managed PTSD Coach will reduce symptoms, with Clinician Supported PTSD Coach showing larger reductions. In addition, to assess feasibility and acceptability, the study will assess engagement, satisfaction, and barriers in both PTSD Coach app conditions. This project aims to fill a significant gap in evidence-based mental health treatments for WTC General Responders. It responds to the WTCHP Scientific Technical Advisory Committee's call for more research on mental health interventions and addresses the critical shortage of rigorously tested app-based remote interventions for dispersed General Responders with PTSD. The study also focuses on Spanish-speaking Latinx General Responders, a group that has not been specifically targeted in previous interventions. The study's findings could lead to the development of readily deployable interventions nationally to meet the mental health needs of WTC responders and survivors, providing a valuable resource for treatment researchers and health care providers.
This study explores how help-seeking behaviors for both emotional well-being and allergies impact the management of allergic rhinitis, asthma, and mental health symptoms, including anxiety and depression. The research involves a retrospective and longitudinal analysis of patients who sought treatment for allergic rhinitis and mental health concerns. The goal is to highlight the importance of integrating mental health care into allergy treatment plans to improve overall patient outcomes.
The goal of this observational study is to develop and test a mobile app for Spanish speakers residing in the US who seeking drug treatment and/or behavioral health services for themselves or an associate. The main questions it aims to answer are: What are the features and content needed on this app? How will people use and share this app? Will they connect with treatment services? After receiving input from focus group participants and other community stakeholders, the app was made available and its usage was tracked to determine its long-term, broad-scale feasibility.
The current research will investigate the impact of general psychotherapy using common factors (i.e., techniques and communication skills that are common to all major forms of psychotherapy) to investigate whether mental health professionals can treat a variety of mental health concerns utilizing this general form of psychotherapy as opposed to specific forms of psychotherapy that may require specific trainings or education.
