Mobile Mindfulness Training (mMT) for People in Medication Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD)
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if mobile mindfulness training can help people in treatment for opioid use disorder. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Will people with opioid use disorder and childhood trauma use mobile mindfulness training? * Will mobile mindfulness training help people with opioid use disorder and childhood trauma have decreased markers of psychological stress? Participants will: Be given access to mobile mindfulness training and encouragement to use it daily for 30 days. Keep a diary of how often mobile mindfulness training is used. Visit the clinic four times to measure stress levels, including written rating scales, blood work, and heart rate tests.

Mindfulness Training and Respiration Biosignal Feedback - Study 1
Description

The goal of this research is to develop a new breathing feature on the meditation app, Equa, to help young adults who are distressed, understand their physiological responses and mindfulness skill development during meditation. Our main aims are to build an algorithm that can use physiologic signals to: * Give feedback about how participant physiology is changing during guided lessons on the meditation app, Equa * Measure how much participant mindfulness skills are improving Participants will: * Complete a survey about demographics, their thoughts and feelings before and after the mindfulness meditation program * Complete 14 smartphone guided mindfulness meditation training units while physiological measures are being recorded * Complete a few brief questionnaires before and after mindfulness practices to understand potential changes in their mindfulness skills

VR Mindfulness Training for Veterans With SCI
Description

This study involves delivering a mindfulness program that was developed for Veterans called VA Compassionate Awareness Learning Module (VA CALM) to Veterans with spinal cord injuries (SCI) to develop accommodations to make the VA CALM program more accessible for those with SCI. It will involve delivering the unmodified curriculum to a group of Veterans with SCI first to determine what areas need accommodations, working with a group of stakeholders to develop appropriate accommodations, and then delivering 1-2 modified modules via virtual reality to evaluate whether using virtual reality was feasible and acceptable for this program.

Type I Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Trial of Primary Care Brief Mindfulness Training for Veterans
Description

The VA wants to understand what type of integrative and whole health approaches are helpful for Veterans. The study is comparing two primary care based mental health treatments, a mindfulness class that teaches mindfulness meditation and a problem-solving class that teaches problem-solving skills and how to build resilience, for Veterans who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or PTSD. The goal of the study is to understand if the classes reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or PTSD and increase overall functioning.

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the feasibility of a mobile app-based mindfulness training program in collegiate student-athletes. The main questions it aims to answer are: * Is a app-based mindfulness program feasible for use with collegiate student athletes? * What, if any, benefits are seen in the mental wellbeing of collegiate student athletes following mindfulness training? Participants will use the Calm app to complete semi-structured program of 21 mindfulness sessions over 6 weeks. Participants will complete each 8-15 minute sessions at a location and time of their choosing.

Impact of Mindfulness Training on Adolescent Well-Being and Behavior
Description

There is a broad consensus that preventing or delaying initiation of adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use can substantially improve both short- and long-term adolescent health. Despite the existence of effective prevention programs, adolescent ATOD use continues to be a substantial issue. Continued research on preventive interventions is needed. School-based mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been shown to be feasible and effective at improving adolescent psychological well-being. Evidence from both quasi-experimental studies and randomized controlled trials suggests that incorporating MBIs into school-settings can lower levels of anxiety, depression, and stress, while improving capacity for emotional regulation. Greater mindfulness also been linked to reduced adolescent ATOD use via observational studies. There are strong theoretical reasons to believe that MBIs delivered in school settings can prevent or reduce ATOD use among youth. In particular, MBIs have been shown to improve psychological well-being among youth via multiple mechanisms also relevant for adolescent ATOD use. These mechanisms include enhanced attentional control, negative emotion regulation, promotion of positive emotion generation, and increased feelings of connectedness. Despite these connections, school-based MBIs are yet to demonstrate the ability to prevent or reduce adolescent ATOD use. The current study will examine psychological well-being and ATOD use among approximately 80 participants in a quasi-experimental, school-based MBI. In early 2022, approximately 40 high school seniors were provided with one semester of a weekly, classroom-based MBI embedded into their Social Studies curriculum; approximately 40 high school seniors participated in the standard curriculum. The intervention group was provided with an adaptation of Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE). MORE is an evidence-based therapeutic program that integrates mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and positive psychology to treat addiction and enhance well-being. MORE has been shown to produce therapeutic benefits in the treatment of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug addiction in adult populations, but is yet to be tested as a preventive intervention for youth. Follow up data collection is planned for spring 2023 to assess psychological well-being, ATOD use, and proposed therapeutic mechanisms pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at 9-month follow up.

Remote Mindfulness Training Following Early Life Adversity
Description

This study will test the feasibility of delivering smartphone-based mindfulness and coping interventions to a sample of emerging/young adults with a history of early life adversity (ELA). 80 participants with a history of ELA will be randomly assigned to complete a two-week mindfulness training intervention or matched coping control intervention, both involving 14 foundational audio-guided lessons and practice prompts randomly delivered 3x daily. At baseline, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up lab assessments, participants will complete questionnaires and provide blood samples for assessment of markers of inflammation. Data assessing subjective and physiological stress in daily life will be collected during the intervention and for one week before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. Passive sensor data will be continuously collected from participants' smartphones and wearable devices to develop exploratory models that estimate and predict daily life stress. Data will be used to evaluate feasibility and acceptability of interventions and assessments in an ELA sample, test effects of mindfulness training on daily life stress and markers of inflammation in an ELA sample, and develop exploratory machine learning models of stress from passive sensor data.

Mindfulness Training for Smoking Cessation
Description

Participants will complete this study remotely, either at home or at their preferred location using an online platform. The investigators propose to test the effects of a mindfulness training \[MT: Headspace\] intervention compared to a time and attention psycho-education control \[control: TedTalks\] among N=200 adult smokers of a nicotine product. Previous studies suggest that mindfulness training may be beneficial in reducing craving during tobacco abstinence. During the study, participants will complete baseline questionnaires, followed by two weeks of daily MT or control training and self-report on questionnaires assessing affect, cognition, and smoking behavior using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) for remote data capture. Following this two weeks of training, participants will complete a smoking quit attempt and complete daily EMA questionnaires for two weeks. The first day of the smoking quit attempt will include a remote Zoom video session following overnight smoking abstinence. During this session the participants will complete a remote stressor task (Trier Social Stress Test, TSST), and the investigators will collect EMA data on affect and smoking behavior before and after the TSST. One month after the start of the quit attempt, participants will complete a phone call as a follow-up to assess smoking behavior over the previous 30 days, and to complete a debriefing. Study objectives are to test the effect of MT on: (1) smoking lapses during the follow-up periods; and (2) stress (affect, smoking urge, withdrawal symptoms) during the TSST.

Virtual Mindfulness Training for Adults With History of Depression
Description

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has shown to be an effective method of preventing relapse of an episode Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). MBCT is a group program that integrates mindfulness skills training with cognitive-behavioral strategies. However, the cost of MBCT is not affordable to many families. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and efficacy of an MBCT intervention designed to be delivered at low cost through a virtual delivery format. This study will recruit 240 participants who are in remission from depression and randomize them to an MBCT intervention group or treatment as usual (TAU) for the wait list control group. The wait list control group will complete the intervention after the MBCT intervention group. Assessment administered at pre-intervention (baseline), post-intervention for experimental group, and post-intervention for the wait list control group and follow-up for experimental group. The primary outcome is to test the efficacy of this community-based delivery in reducing depression severity and psychiatric distress in the relapse of an episode of MDD. The secondary outcomes include perceived stress, post-traumatic stress symptoms, adherence to treatment plans not given as part of this study, frequency of relapse of MDD, mindfulness skills, and quality of life. This study will also examine the following potential moderators and correlates of intervention outcomes: comorbid diagnoses, life events history, and MBCT intervention adherence. Finally, the study will examine the following mediators of intervention outcome: mindfulness skills, emotion regulation skills, executive functioning skills, savoring, and positive and negative affect.

Adaptation of Mindfulness Training to Treat Moral Injury in Veterans
Description

This project is highly innovative as it will be the first to develop a mindfulness-based treatment as a first-line intervention tailored to target moral injury among combat-wounded veterans. In Study 1, the investigators recruited a small group of veterans to give feedback on the project. In Studies 2 and 3, the investigators will compare the newly developed mindfulness training to an equally intensive Educational Support condition. Further, if successful, this application may have the ability to adapted and extended to address common to other professions that experience moral injury.

The Effect of Mindfulness Training Before Primary Total Joint Arthroplasty on Sleep Quality

Neurobehavioral Effects of Prenatal Mindfulness Training on Maternal Presence and Compassionate Love
Description

This study investigates how prenatal mindfulness training fosters prosocial qualities a mother brings to parenting-specifically, her ability to be present with and experience compassionate love for her child. The mother-child relationship profoundly shapes the way humans learn to experience the world and relate to other people. It is known that mothers who respond more sensitively to their infant's emotional cues form more secure attachment relationships that, in turn, foster positive social-emotional development in the child. Thus, programs that strengthen the capacities supporting maternal sensitivity, such as mothers' ability to attend fully to their child's range of emotions with compassion and lovingkindness, hold great potential for promoting intergenerational well-being. Ideally, such capacities would be cultivated before the child is even born so as to have the greatest cumulative impact. Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting (MBCP) is a 9-week program developed to train pregnant women and their partners in the foundations of mindfulness and prepare them to apply mindfulness to birthing and parenting an infant. The intervention has shown beneficial effects on women's psychological wellbeing but has not yet been studied in relation to parenting outcomes. In addition, little is known about (a) biobehavioral mechanisms of action in MBCP, and (b) characteristics of expectant mothers that may moderate the impact of the training. It is important to address these gaps to determine the scope of prenatal mindfulness training effects and who could benefit most from such a program. This study aims to fill these gaps through an active comparison, randomized controlled trial (RCT) of MBCP compared to (non-mindfulness-based) childbirth education. The investigators will compare mothers who have completed MBCP to mothers with no mindfulness training on both behavioral (self-report) and biological (neural activation to infant cues) indices of prosocial parenting qualities toward the following aims: Aim 1: Determine the effect of prenatal mindfulness training on self-report measures of maternal presence and compassionate love. Hypothesis 1: Mothers who have taken part in MBCP will report higher levels of mindful presence, love, and compassion for their infants. These differences will be evident both immediately following the course and sustained later with their infants. Aim 2: Determine the effect of prenatal mindfulness training on neural activation to one's infant in regions supporting presence and compassionate love. Including neural measures may reveal intervention effects not yet obvious at the behavioral level that have important consequences for mother/infant functioning. Hypothesis 2: Mothers who have taken part in MBCP will show increased neural activation to their infant's emotion cues in brain regions involved in present-centered attention (anterior cingulate cortex \[ACC\] and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex \[dlPFC\]), emotional resonance (ACC, insula, ventral prefrontal cortex \[vPFC\]), and mammalian bonding (striatum). Aim 3: Identify moderating factors that strengthen the effects of prenatal mindfulness training. Hypothesis 3: Mothers who begin the class with more risk characteristics (single parent, greater distress) will show greater benefits of MBCP, as will those with higher mindfulness practice dosage. Addressing these aims will shed much-needed light on the ways that mindfulness training during a key developmental life transition can enhance prosocial qualities that contribute to the health and well-being of subsequent generations.

Compassion Training and Mindfulness Training for Social Well-Being and Mental Health
Description

Study Design, Aims, and Population: The present study is a three-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT). The primary aim is to test the relative efficacy of two 8-week online interventions - Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - in promoting diverse university students' social well-being (i.e., reduced loneliness, and enhanced social connectedness and perceived social support) compared to a Waitlist (WL) control group. The secondary aim is to examine the effects of CCT versus MBSR on the mental health of diverse university students compared to the WL group. Mental health is defined in this research as both positive mental health (i.e., happiness, positive emotions, meaning and purpose) and negative mental health (i.e., stress, anxiety, and depression). Additionally, another aim is to enroll 75% students of color and 50% male identifying students, whose social well-being and mental health is currently understudied, to better represent the sociodemographic diversity of the university student population in the literature. Study Rationale: The COVID-19 pandemic triggered widespread disruptions in social connections and relational bonds that robustly support a variety of mental and physical health-protective processes. University students' social well-being may have been especially impacted as universities provide a central context for socialization. At the same time, the pandemic exacerbated a pre-existing rise in cases of mental health conditions in university students. If found effective, online-based CCT and MBSR might serve as scalable psychological interventions to foster social thriving and mental health among diverse university students.

Mechanisms and Predictors of Change in App-Based Mindfulness Training for Adolescents
Description

A growing body of research implicates rumination as being a transdiagnostic risk factor involved in the development of depression and anxiety in youth. Critically, mindfulness meditation has shown significant promise in targeting rumination, and ultimately improving depressive and anxiety symptoms. Mindfulness apps offer a convenient and cost-effective means for accessing mindfulness training, while being interactive and engaging for youth. Despite their growing popularity among teens, strikingly little research has been conducted on these apps. Two critical questions have yet to be addressed: (1) what are the underlying neural and cognitive mechanisms that account for the beneficial effects of these apps and (2) for whom is app-based mindfulness well-suited. To address these gaps, adolescents (ages 13-18) will be randomly assigned to an app-delivered mindfulness course vs. a control condition and will complete pre- and post-intervention resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans to probe static and dynamic functional connectivity within - and between - brain networks strongly implicated in mindfulness training and rumination. In addition, cognitive tasks will be administered at pre- and post-intervention to assess attentional control abilities putatively enhanced by mindfulness training. Finally, mindfulness skills and changes in rumination will be assessed via smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA). First, the investigators will test whether changes in (1) brain functional connectivity, (2) attentional control and (3) acquisition and use of mindfulness skills mediate between-group (i.e., app vs. control) differences in the reduction of rumination. Second, the investigators will test whether a machine learning model incorporating baseline clinical, demographic, and psychosocial characteristics can be used to identify which adolescents are predicted to benefit from app-based mindfulness training.

Description

The overarching goal of the project is to investigate if a mindfulness-based attention training (MBAT) program contextualized for Military Senior Leaders (SLs) might benefit SLs in three key domains: (1) cognitive abilities, (2) psychological well-being and self-reported physical health, and (3) strategic leadership skills and ability. The MBAT-SL program will be tested by the training cohorts and compared to the wait-list control cohorts who will receive the training after a no-training interval.

A Study of Adolescents Undergoing a Mindfulness Training During COVID-19
Description

The COVID-19 pandemic has been significantly affecting people's lives around the globe. Social distancing, self-quarantine, shelter-in-place measures, economic challenges, and COVID-19-cased illness and deaths have the potential to significantly impact mental health and cause stress, anxiety, and depression. Adolescents may be especially vulnerable to this situation, due to their increased vulnerability to the onset of depression and anxiety in general. One promising approach to reduce anxiety and depression in youth is a neuroscience-based mindfulness intervention Training for Awareness Resilience and Action (TARA). TARA is usually delivered over 12 weeks by two facilitators in groups of 10-15 adolescents in-person, and it has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in depressed adolescents and modify brain properties. The TARA intervention can also be delivered remotely. Other types of therapy delivered remotely, such as internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy, have shown comparable efficiency to face-to-face delivery. The objective of this study is to utilize an individually randomized group treatment, open-label, waitlist-controlled clinical trial to test the feasibility of TARA (delivered partially over Zoom) in improving the self-reported emotional well-being primary outcome (emotional problems measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire \[SDQ\]) in healthy adolescents between the ages of 14 to 18 years old during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our central hypothesis is that emotional well-being of adolescents in the intervention group will improve stronger (or deteriorate less) than in the control group. We will test this hypothesis in 21 adolescents randomized to the TARA intervention (partially delivered over Zoom) (12 adolescents) or to the waitlist control group (9 adolescents).

Chronic stress has been shown to impact long-term emotional and physical health. When nearly three-quarters of Americans report stress at levels that exceed what they consider healthy, there is a desperate need to understand factors that contribute to effective stress regulation. This work seeks to develop a measure tied to awareness and acceptance of stress that has shown promise as a predictor of multiple markers of mental and physical well-being, understand how it relates to awareness of the body, and explore whether it can be trained to alleviate suffering and promote well-being. This study aims to 1) Conceptually replicate and extend previous findings linking greater stress-physiology coherence to higher well-being. 2) Assess whether awareness of physiology is associated with stress-physiology coherence. 3) Explore whether stress-physiology coherence can be trained through a brief mindfulness training intervention.

Somatic Mindfulness Training for a Healthy Workforce: Student Pilot Sample
