Maternal sensitivity and contingent responsiveness to infant behavioral cues is an important contributor to infants' developing capacities to self-regulate. During early infancy, feeding interactions comprise a significant portion of mother-infant dyadic interactions and high-quality feeding interactions provide both nutritive and socioemotional benefits; recent data suggest that, for many dyads, mothers' sensitive responsiveness during feeding interactions is routinely impacted by the omnipresence of portable technology. The objective of the proposed research is to better understand the development and possible impacts of maternal technology use on infant feeding interactions, emotion and intake regulation, and sociobehavioral and growth outcomes.
Black women have a significantly higher risk of acquiring HIV compared to their non-Black counterparts. The purpose of this study is to refine and test a mobile HIV Prevention and Reproductive Health app developed specifically for Black women.
Major depressive and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in the general population and are a leading cause of disability. Black adults have a high burden of depression and anxiety. This study aims to assess a self- administered video-based intervention to reduce mental illness stigma and medical mistrust among Black adults with moderate to severe depression or anxiety.
Children with cerebral palsy (CP), Gross Motor Functional Classification Scale (GMFCS) I-II will be recruited to participate in a home based physical activity intervention for 4 weeks. Demographic data will be collected, and validated surveys assessing baseline physical activity level and mobility will be completed. Participants will have an exercise program assigned and will be given a logbook to record their exercise adherence. They will be assigned to the Augment Reality (AR) app group. The AR app group will have exercises administered through the AR app. At the end of the program, participants will complete final surveys and an exit interview.
The goal of this pilot study is to examine the feasibility of the prototype C-STRESS app with 3 college students from UCI with clinically significant depression (scored ≥ 10 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9). The main question it aims to answer is: whether the prototype C-STRESS is useful for college students to manage daily stress and depression symptoms. Participants were asked to use the C-STRESS app daily for 6 weeks to participate in CBCT lessons, watch guided meditation videos, complete short reflective exercises, and engage with other content provided in C-STRESS (i.e., attending drop-in sessions, journaling, completing mood and wellbeing check-ins, and reading educational articles on depression, anxiety, and stress). At the end of week 3 and 6, participants completed 6 online surveys (System Usability Scale, Technology Acceptance Model, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, General Anxiety Disorder-7, Health Related Quality of Life-4, and Brief-COPE) to assess C-STRESS's usability/feasibility and changes in depressive symptoms and coping styles over the study period.
Black adolescents who are pregnant represent a high-risk and understudied perinatal population in health research. Adolescent pregnancy (\<20 years) is disproportionately prevalent among Blacks compared with Whites and is a prominent risk factor for obesity. Fortunately, metabolic consequences of increasing physical activity coupled with minimal sedentary time can mitigate biological imperils and behavioral interventions targeting perinatal populations have demonstrated efficacy for this approach. Intervention studies to promote physical activity and reduce sedentarism among Black, perinatal adolescents in disadvantaged, rural settings may be a promising strategy to prevent obesity and reduce disparities. In the proposed study, investigators will assess the feasibility and acceptability of #BabyLetsMove, a mobile health intervention targeting three behavioral goals: (1) limit TV time to less than 2 hours a day (sedentary behavior); (2) take 10,000 steps or more per day (physical activity); and (3) do 20 minutes or more of structured activity like prenatal yoga or dance videos per day (exercise). In the #BabyLetsMove feasibility trial investigators aim to conduct a single-arm, 4-week pilot with 20 Black adolescents (15- to 19-years) enrolled in Mississippi's Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to test the intervention's feasibility and acceptability. Participants will receive one text message per day for 4-weeks targeting behavior change strategies and two health coaching sessions via mobile phone; an introduction session in week one and a problem-solving session in week three. Investigators will also use qualitative interviewing with additional adolescents (n=20) to solicit user feedback regarding the acceptability of intervention content and materials. Finally, in preparation for a pilot study using an effectiveness-implementation hybrid study design, investigators will conduct a pre-implementation evaluation using quantitative surveying (n=6 surveys) with WIC providers (n=60) to better under the culture and climate of WIC. Investigators hypothesize the #BabyLetsMove intervention will be acceptable to adolescents and a future pilot randomized controlled trial will be feasible. Investigators also anticipate identifying modifiable barriers and facilitators to implementing the intervention through WIC, which will help to design an implementation strategy with a high likelihood for uptake by WIC.
To pilot a stand-alone mobile phone intervention with Latino caregivers of 2- to 5-year olds, using a prospective control group design, to assess feasibility and preliminary effect sizes on children's BMI changes (primary outcome) and dietary and physical activity changes (secondary outcomes) at 6 months post-baseline, in preparation for a larger randomized trial to evaluate the intervention's efficacy.
The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of a smartphone app in reducing mobile phone use while driving among teens and parents. Prior to sending a message, the smartphone app informs a potential message sender that the recipient is driving.
In this study, subjects who are attending the dermatology clinic and who have already been prescribed topical 5-fluorouracial for the treatment of actinic keratoses as part of their standard of care will be recruited. The purpose of the study is to assess patient satisfaction when engaging in follow up treatment of actinic keratosis via the HIPAA-compliant teledermatology platform called Klara. Additionally, the goal is to assess the difference in total duration of treatment between treatment and control group. A total of 50 subjects will be enrolled and will be randomly assigned into the treatment group (teledermatology group; n=25) or control group (telephone only group; n=25).
The proposed study will develop a smartphone/mobile app intervention that incorporates ecological momentary assessment (i.e., two brief surveys per day) and daily intervention messaging (2 messages per day) for three weeks to target high-risk alcohol use among young adult college students. The intervention mainly focuses on alcohol expectancies, alcohol use, and consequences and the daily associations between these and includes personalized intervention messages based on participants' own event-level expectations and experiences. Other psycho-educational alcohol-related content is also provided over the course of three week intervention. This mobile app intervention will be used in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing young adult college students who receive the intervention with those who only receive assessments via the mobile app.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of a Scheduled Gradual Reduction (SGR) intervention via Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging plus SMS Support Messages in decreasing smokeless tobacco use in a rural population.
The purpose of this study is to conduct a randomized controlled trial to determine the effects of a cellphone app and a driving mode intervention on driving behavior in drivers aged 18-24 years.
The QUIT-Mobile study proposes to use mobile phone self-monitoring and feedback to enhance and sustain over 12-months the impacts of the Quit Using Drugs Intervention Trial (QUIT), an effective screening and brief intervention (SBI) previously successful in reducing risky drug use (i.e., moderate use) in low-income, diverse patients over a 3-month follow up. The investigators will conduct the QUIT-Mobile study for patients who receive care in clinics of federally qualified health centers (FQHC) in Southern California over 12-months follow up. The study is an Effectiveness-Implementation Hybrid Type 1 design consisting of a single-blind, 3-arm, RCT with adult, mostly Latino FQHC primary care patients with risky drug use (ASSIST score 4-26), randomized to 3 conditions (n=200/arm, n=600 total): 1) QUIT-Mobile; 2) standard QUIT; 3) Usual Care. Qualitative data on implementation facilitators and barriers will inform future scale-up and sustainability, in addition to cost data analyses. The aims are to examine effectiveness in reducing risky drug use and cost-effectiveness comparing the three arms over 3-, 6- and 12-months. Drug use measures include self-reports for past 30-days and urine drug screen validation for underreporting (acknowledging that people with moderate risk drug use have sporadic drug use patterns requiring longer self-report recalls for drug use that urine screens may not detect). The 3-arm study enables testing of the independent and synergistic effects of QUIT-Mobile compared to QUIT and both to Usual Care. The 12-month timeline reflects annual primary care visits when screening and brief intervention would be repeated routinely. The QUIT intervention contains 3 primary components: 1) patient screening with the WHO ASSIST, 2) brief clinician advice (\<3 minutes) including opioid overdose prevention education, and 3) 2- and 6-week telephone drug-use health coaching sessions utilizing motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques, delivered by paraprofessional health coaches. QUIT-Mobile tests the addition of mobile phone self-monitoring, automated feedback, and coach monitoring dashboard to enhance and sustain QUIT\'s drug use reductions using mobile-web app, text-messaging (SMS), or interactive voice response (IVR).
In an attempt to reduce smoking-related health disparities, investigators will implement a text messaging-based smoking cessation intervention in collaboration with state quit lines. The approach is based on the successful STOMP (STOp smoking by Mobile Phone) program, a text messaging-based smoking cessation intervention among young Maori adults in New Zealand. Investigators will adapt the STOMP intervention, which will result in a new intervention known as AI STOMP (American Indians STOp smoking by Mobile Phone).The primary aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the AI-STOMP intervention in smoking cessation among American Indians.
The Sponsor is doing a research study to assess the effects of a smartphone program designed to help users smoke less and eventually quit. When participants join, their involvement in the core study will last 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, they will have the option to continue using the program to guide their quit journey or participate in follow-up research.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of a Scheduled Gradual Reduction (SGR) intervention via SMS (short message service) text messaging plus SMS Support Messages in decreasing smoking in an older adult rural population. The SGR group (n=20) will receive a four-week SGR program delivered via SMS text messages plus SMS support messages. The control group (n=20) will receive SMS support messages to aid in quitting.
This R01 project titled "Family-focused vs. Drinker-focused Smartphone Interventions to Reduce Drinking-related Consequences of COVID-19" is a Hybrid II RCT/implementation study to modify and test two of our alcohol smartphone interventions to address the fallout from COVID. We propose a three-arm RCT comparing a smartphone control group vs. a drinker-focused intervention vs. a family-focused intervention. All study arms recruit dyads comprising a person who drinks and a family partner.
The primary objective of this project is to test the acceptability and feasibility of a mobile application to facilitate mental health symptom monitoring and follow-up among Veterans. During the course of the study, the research application will be installed on participants' mobile phone. The application on the participants' phone will be recording data about their behavior. Participants will also be asked to complete bi-weekly surveys via the app.
The primary goal of the proposed trial is to examine the effect of combining frequent self-monitoring via Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMAs) and automated interventions via Ecological Momentary Interventions (EMIs) provided by smartphone, on days of abstinence from drugs and alcohol and HIV risk behaviors over 6 months following treatment discharge. We will recruit 400 participants at discharge (both planned or unplanned) from Illinois' largest treatment organization and randomly assign them in a 2 x 2 factorial design to receive EMA only, EMI only, combined EMA+EMI, or neither (control). Participants in the 3 EMA and EMI groups will receive a smartphone and training after discharge. To help them self-monitor, individuals in the EMA groups will be randomly signaled 6 times daily for 6 months and asked to record their recent substance use, HIV risk behaviors (e.g., needle use, unprotected sex) and exposure to internal and external protective and risk factors, then to rate the extent to which these factors support their recovery or make them want to use drugs or alcohol. Individuals in the EMI groups will have 24/7 access to a smartphone recovery support system. In the combined EMA+EMI group, participants will receive feedback directly following completion of each 2-3 minute EMA, and EMA responses will be used to encourage EMI utilization. The primary hypotheses are H1 Random assignment to a) EMA (vs. not), b) EMI (vs. not), and c) their interaction will be associated with more days of abstinence from drugs and alcohol over the 6 months post discharge. H2 Random assignment to a) EMA, b) EMI, and c) their interaction will be a associated with fewer HIV risk behaviors over the 6 months post discharge. H3 Days abstinent at 3 months post discharge will mediate the effects of a) EMA, b) EMI and c) their interaction on HIV Risk behavior at 6 months post discharge.
The study is designed to develop and test a tailored adaptive text messaging/short message service (SMS) intervention for individuals interested in reducing their alcohol consumption. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, problem or risky drinking is defined as greater than 7 standard drinks per week for women and 14 standard drinks per week for men. Other groups have other criteria (e.g., 10 drinks for women and 14 for men per week). The Institute of Medicine reports that problem drinkers are those with mild-to-moderate problem severity who do not have physical dependence. Heavy drinking individuals with non-abstinence goals rarely seek treatment for excessive alcohol use, and newer methods such as internet screening and mobile apps provide opportunities to engage and treat this difficult to reach population. There are now 96 mobile phone contracts for every 100 people on earth, making mobile interventions a highly viable method for extending care beyond traditional methods. Text messaging or short message service (SMS) is the most widely available mode of mobile communication and despite its simplicity, has been proven to be a reliable and effective method to induce behavior change across behavioral health targets, including problem drinking. However, large scale randomized controlled trials are needed to provide the necessary empirical evidence to validate SMS interventions and understand the mediators and moderators of outcome for help seeking heavy drinkers who are using or unable to attend in-person care.
This study is designed to develop and test a tailored adaptive text messaging/short message service (SMS) intervention for individuals interested in stopping or reducing their alcohol consumption; and test and compare it to tailored but static, once a day messaging, gain framed messaging, and ecological momentary assessment only.
This study is comprised of 2 phases to study the impact of a text message system on overall adherence to a web-based smoking cessation program. Phase I uses a full factorial design to identify the most optimal text message intervention to maximize adherence to the BecomeAnEX.org smoking cessation program. Phase II is a randomized controlled trial that compares regular BecomeAnEX users to those who will receive the optimized text message intervention (from Phase I) in conjunction with BecomeAnEX for impact on long-term abstinence.
Hazardous drinking is common among Veteran primary care patients and increases risk for more costly and complex medical problems over the long-term. Yet, the vast majority of these Veterans go untreated. By providing an option for care that is easily accessible, private, and self-directed, mobile applications (apps) circumvent many barriers to alcohol use treatment. However, poor patient engagement remains the Achilles' heel of these apps. Through supportive accountability, Peer Specialists can maximize the reach and engagement of these apps with patients and improve drinking outcomes. The goal of this project is to evaluate whether an app for alcohol use self-management ("Stand Down") reduces drinking among Veteran primary care patients who engage in hazardous drinking, and for whom Peer-Supported-Stand Down is more effective than the app alone. If successful, the proposed research has the potential to transform care and increase access to alcohol-related services for Veterans who engage in hazardous drinking but rarely seek treatment, and, in turn, mitigate the adverse health outcomes that stem from untreated hazardous drinking.
The objective of the current research is to improve treatment for injection opioid users by augmenting pharmacotherapy with an innovative text-messaging strategy to promote relapse prevention skills, reduce HIV-risk behaviors, and improve HIV treatment regimen adherence.
Background: Quitting smoking is hard. It is easy to relapse. Smokers may think of temptation to smoke as a threat if they think it suggests that they are unable to meet the challenges of stopping. When people feel such a threat to their sense of self-identity, they may get defensive. They may want to downplay the importance of quitting. This could make them try to quit less. Self-affirmation is a process of focusing on strengths and values. This can offset threats to the self and promote healthier behavior. Objective: To explore people s values, smoking attitudes, and smoking behavior. Eligibility: People ages 18 and older who smoke Design: The study takes place entirely on a mobile device. Participants will give their age, gender, data about their smoking habits, and desired quit date. Then they will get different texts about quitting. The proposed study, for HIV positive alcohol dependent adults currently taking naltrexone, is a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) examining the outcomes of a 12-week behavioral support program delivered via text-messaging. It is expected that the text messaging intervention will reduce alcohol use and HIV-risk behaviors. The investigators also hypothesize that the intervention will improve adherence to HIV treatment and naltrexone. To test the effects of the intervention on these target outcomes, 25 participants receiving the text messaging intervention will be compared to 25 participants receiving an informational pamphlet. The pamphlet will contain information about the importance of HIV treatment adherence, reducing HIV risk behaviors, and health consequences associated with alcohol use. By providing support to maximize HIV treatment regimen and naltrexone adherence, coupled with coping skills to promote abstinence from alcohol, the text messaging intervention may provide a promising, cost-effective, and easily deployable behavioral support program for alcohol users who are HIV-infected.
