Online Intervention for Transgender/Nonbinary Young Adults' Experiences With Alcohol and Romantic Relationships
Description

The objective of this study is to learn more about Whole Selves, an interactive online resource ("intervention") to help transgender and/or nonbinary young adults reflect on their experiences and goals related to both alcohol use and romantic relationships. Existing online interventions focused on alcohol use often aren't a good fit for trans/nonbinary people, and existing relationship education programs don't account for how being trans/nonbinary might influence someone's relationships. For these reasons, the investigator is working with trans/nonbinary young adults and other community stakeholders to create a new intervention specifically for trans/nonbinary young adults. The goals of this clinical trial are to: 1. Find out what transgender/nonbinary young adults think of the Whole Selves intervention in order to improve it 2. See whether the Whole Selves intervention seems to work as expected 3. Help the investigator make plans for a bigger clinical trial of the Whole Selves intervention, which could tell us how well it works In this study, participants will use the Whole Selves intervention; complete online surveys about themselves, their romantic relationship experiences, their mental health, their alcohol use; and provide feedback on the Whole Selves intervention.

Sexual and Gender Minority Youth (SGMY) and Online Interventions to Increase Help-seeking for Anxiety and/or Depression
Description

the investigators will use 4 technology based tools (combinations of youtube videos, links to online resources, tiktok videos, and other media) in a study of 96 Sexual and Gender Minority Youth (SGMY) to determine the effectiveness of them in helping youth to seek out mental health help. Participants will be divided into 1 of 16 groups and will interact with other participants anonymously on Discord. Each group will have access to 1, 2, 3, or all 4 of the tools which are categorized by a specific subject (except for one group who will have no access to the tools in order to compare this outcome against those who use the tools). There will be a survey before starting the Discord portion which will last 4 weeks, and a survey afterwards.

Description

The current project aims to improve the well-being of trans and nonbinary (TNB) individuals through an online intervention (Trans Care) targeting the reduction of symptoms of gender dysphoria. The Trans Care intervention will involve the creation of an online intervention comprised of eight modules intended to reduce symptoms of gender dysphoria, increase active coping, and improve the well-being of TNB individuals. Aim 2 is a randomized controlled trial of the proposed intervention and will enroll 260 TNB participants.

Aim 1 is a feasibility and acceptability study of the proposed intervention and will enroll 100 TNB participants to provide feedback to inform a follow-up randomized controlled trial.

Heartache and Backache- An Online Intervention Addressing Emotional and Physical Pain
Description

This study is designed to determine if a brief educational program and a written emotional disclosure task can improve chronic back/neck pain-related outcomes and change pain beliefs and other processes in individuals with chronic back pain. Individuals will be randomly assigned to an experimental condition (pain and affect neuroscience education) or a control condition (general health activities questionnaire), and then subsequently randomized to a second experimental condition (written emotional disclosure) or a control condition (writing about healthy habits). Analyses will examine the main and interactive effects of the pain and affect neuroscience education and written emotional disclosure on improved pain-related outcomes at 1-month follow-up. Participants in both the experimental conditions are expected to show more improvement on pain severity, pain interference, psychological distress and psychological attitudes toward pain at follow-up, relative to participants in the control groups.

Online Intervention for Traumatic Brain Injury Wellbeing
Description

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients face notable impairments which lead to reduced performance and regulation of daily and overall functioning. There are a number of interventions made to combat these qualms; however, such interventions have historically been therapeutically demanding, which limits their practical benefit. An online therapeutic intervention can provide a cost-effective approach that can be particularly well-suited to the needs and limitations of TBI. It focuses both on developing awareness and attention, which are often impaired, and are critical to improving emotional and behavioral regulation and everyday function. This project is aimed at assessing the effectiveness and underlying mechanism of modified mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) using a rigorous randomized controlled trial. Poised to provide a rigorous approach to efficacy development and analysis, Results of the study will provide valuable information that will ultimately support the refinement of an intervention that can have a real impact on patients' ability to resume a fully functional and satisfying life, and the design of an adequate therapeutic intervention for TBI patients.

Online Intervention to Promote Resilience to Traumatic Stress During Pregnancy
Description

The investigators will design, construct, and pilot a prototype of a trauma-informed online intervention, which will be called "SunnysideFlex," that functionally integrates a web-based intervention targeting skills to decrease symptoms of PTSD and better manage mood during and after pregnancy. SunnysideFlex will build upon the previously IRB-approved "Sunnyside" intervention which targeted skills to manage mood through an interactive website with didactic material and tools. Women in weeks 16-28 of their pregnancy who self-report symptoms of PTSD will be randomized to one of three study groups: (1) SunnysideFlex, (2) the original Sunnyside intervention (active control), or (3) treatment as usual (TAU). The SunnysideFlex intervention will consist of 6 weeks of trauma-informed online lessons during pregnancy and booster sessions at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks postpartum. Outcomes will be measured at baseline, post-intervention, 6 weeks postpartum, and 12 weeks postpartum. SunnysideFlex has the potential to provide a novel paradigm for improving maternal and child health outcomes in high-risk, trauma-exposed women.

StriveWeekly: Self-Guided Online Intervention for Anxiety, Depression, and Stress in University Students
Description

This study was a randomized controlled trial of an original online mental health promotion program. This study aimed to: 1) establish program effectiveness by examining symptom change between conditions and 2) examine predictors of symptom change. The program was previously tested in open trial feasibility study by the same Principal Investigator and has since been rebuilt as informed by feasibility findings and participant qualitative feedback. Participants were randomly assigned to either a waitlist condition or eight weeks of the intervention condition. Baseline, posttest, and follow-up electronic surveys collected self-reported symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Motivational variables were also assessed at baseline and then tested as moderators of intervention effects.

Brief Online Intervention for Veterans
Description

The objective of this planned research is to more fully test the efficacy of a very brief, inexpensive, single-session, and web-delivered personalized normative feedback (PNF) intervention evaluated in a successful pilot R34 study to prevent alcohol misuse and associated negative consequences, as well as increase behavioral health treatment seeking behaviors among a difficult to reach and treatment resistant veteran population. The investigators expand on successful pilot work by (1) building a large publicly available database of young veteran drinking and treatment seeking norms, (2) focusing on reaching veterans who have recently separated from the military and drink heavily but who have not recently sought any behavioral health treatment, (3) evaluating how an enhanced intervention offering PNF content specifically related to treatment seeking affects preparatory behaviors and actual treatment initiation, and (4) testing hypothesized mediators and moderators of intervention drinking and treatment initiation outcomes relevant for this population. In Aim 1, the investigators will add to a large database of drinking norms for the population by collecting drinking and treatment seeking information from veterans underrepresented in the pilot, such as female veterans (total sample N = 2,500). In Aim 2, investigators then use these norms in a randomized controlled trial of the PNF intervention designed to reach heavy drinking young veterans who are not currently receiving behavioral health care (N = 800) and test if additional feedback about treatment seeking can help promote treatment initiation among this treatment resistant group. Outcomes at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months are compared for participants receiving an enhanced PNF condition (N = 400) to an attention-only control condition (N = 400). In Aim 3, the investigators test mediators of intervention efficacy on drinking outcomes (i.e., changes in perceived norms, increases in treatment initiation) and explore moderators of outcomes to determine if the brief intervention works better for veteran participants based on age, gender, reasons for drinking (social versus coping), perceived stigma, posttraumatic stress disorder disorder and depression symptoms, and solitary drinking. This project is funded by the NIAAA grant R01AA026575.

Online Intervention to Prevent Perinatal Depression and Promote Breastfeeding
Description

"SunnysidePlus" will functionally integrate a web based intervention targeting skills to promote and support breastfeeding, manage mood,and prevent depression. Sunnyside Plus will build upon the previously tested "Sunnyside" intervention which targeted skills to manage mood through an interactive website with didactic material and tools. Women in weeks 20-28 of their pregnancy will be randomized to receive either Sunnyside Plus or Sunnyside. The Sunnyside intervention will consist of 6 weeks of online lessons during pregnancy and booster sessions at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks postpartum. Sunnyside Plus will include additional education and support to improve breastfeeding outcomes. Breastfeeding education and skills will be provided during the 6 weeks of online lessons during pregnancy. Breastfeeding support will continue through 6 weeks postpartum. This postpartum support will involve weekly online lessons, text support, and video support calls with a Lactation Educator provided on an as-needed basis. SunnysidePlus has the potential to provide a novel paradigm for improving breastfeeding outcomes and preventing depression; one that is accessible, highly scalable and cost-effective.

Testing an Online Intervention to Improve Parents' Communication With Gay and Bisexual Sons About Sex and HIV
Description

Young men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for HIV infection in the United States, representing 80% of all infections among youth ages 14-24, and 92% of infections among boys ages 14-19. Despite these risks, the field has not even one HIV prevention intervention shown to be effective in decreasing sexual risks or increasing HIV testing among adolescent MSM (AMSM). Historically, reaching AMSM for HIV prevention has been challenging, given their relative geographic isolation and lack of access to traditional gay congregating spaces (e.g., bars and many gay-related social networking websites). However, the investigators have developed a novel online platform for delivering interventions to parents of LGB youth that currently sees thousands of visitors each year. HIV prevention advocates have identified parents of AMSM as an untapped resource for reducing HIV risk in this population. Parent-child communication about sex has well-demonstrated associations with adolescent risk behaviors, and interventions with parents of heterosexual youth have been shown to be effective in increasing parent-adolescent communication, and thereby, reducing adolescent health risks. Thus, the aim of the proposed study is to pilot test the efficacy of an online intervention to increase and improve parent communication with AMSM about sexuality and HIV, with the ultimate goal of decreasing adolescent sexual risk and increasing HIV testing. This will be achieved by randomizing parents who come to seek resources on the investigators' existing website to receive either (a) a film designed to support parents of LGB youth, or (b) that film + the online communication intervention materials, and then gathering longitudinal, online data from parents in both study arms and their AMSM sons over a 2-4 month period. It is hypothesized that parents in the intervention group will increase their communication with their sons about HIV and condoms.

Brief Online Interventions for Alcohol Use
Description

The purpose of this study is to test the feasibility and acceptability of delivering cognitive training over mTurk. Subjects will be randomized to a 1) inhibitory control training condition, 2) working memory training condition, or 3) control training condition. Recent studies have also demonstrated the feasibility and potential efficacy of delivering brief normative feedback to reduce alcohol consumption through mTurk. In these brief interventions, subjects are provided information about their drinking compared to their same age and gendered peers. Approximately half of the subjects in each cognitive training group will receive normative feedback to evaluate effects on alcohol consumption and possible interactions with cognitive training. This study will focus on alcohol use given the ease and clinical acceptance of alcohol use self-report as a primary outcome.

Assessing Online Interventions for Men's' Mental Health and Wellbeing
Description

The purpose of this study is to test a comprehensive, male-oriented, online screening and referral (Screening for Mental Health; SMH) and male-oriented online information and referral intervention program (Man Therapy; MT) to improve mental health and wellbeing with a focus on prevention of suicide and help-seeking behaviors among middle-aged men. The online programs will be offered together to maximize the effect on reducing suicide behavior and increasing mental health help-seeking behaviors for men. If successful in decreasing suicide behavior and ideation and increasing suicide help-seeking behavior, this intervention could be scaled up to contribute to a reduction in suicide behaviors and deaths across the country.

Teen Online Problem Solving (TOPS) - An Online Intervention Following TBI
Description

The purpose of this study is to learn if using the World Wide Web to train teens and their families in problem-solving, communication skills, and stress management strategies can help them to cope better following traumatic brain injury (TBI). To answer this question, we will look at changes from before the intervention to after the intervention on questionnaire measures of problem-solving skills, communication, social competence, adjustment, and family stress and burden. We hypothesize that families receiving the TOPS intervention will have better parent-child communication and problem-solving skills at follow-up than those receiving the IRC intervention. Additionally, families receiving the TOPS intervention will have lower levels of parental distress, fewer child behavior problems and better child functioning than those receiving the IRC intervention. Lastly, treatment effects will be moderated by SES and life stresses, such that families with greater social disadvantage will benefit more from the TOPS intervention.

Living Memory Home-4-Dementia Care Pairs
Description

The purpose of this study is to evaluate an online platform -- the Living Memory Home for Dementia Care Pairs (LMH-4-DCP) for persons with dementia and their family caregivers to engage in reminiscence activities together and record meaningful memories. The main aims of this study are: * To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the LMH-4-DCP platform. * To explore the potential for LMH-4-DCP to reduce feelings of pre-loss grief and enhancing relationship quality in dementia family caregivers and their care-recipients ('Care-Pairs') Care pair participants will be asked to log-in to LMH-4-DCP and complete study activities three times per week for two weeks. Researchers will compare the intervention group to an attention control condition to see if LMH-4-DCP's use is associated with reduced feelings of caregiver pre-loss grief and improved care pair relationship quality at follow-up.

Physical Activity: Feasibility Study
Description

The Physical Activity Self-efficacy (PAS) intervention is a web-based behavioral intervention newly developed to promote physical activity in adults with obesity. The conceptual framework for the PAS intervention is based on self-efficacy theory. The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of implementing the PAS online intervention for adults with obesity recruited from a local weight management center in the United States of America (USA). The study design is a prospective, double-blind, parallel group randomized pilot trial. Thirty participants will be randomly assigned to the PAS group or usual care group to achieve a 1:1 group assignment. Recruitment of participants is scheduled to begin in January 2024 or earlier at a local weight management center within a private healthcare system in the USA. There are five eligibility criteria for participation in this study (e.g., a body mass index ≥ 25.00 kg/m2). Eligibility verification and data collection will be conducted online. Three waves of data collection will take up to 14 weeks depending on participants' progress in the study. Instruments designed to measure demographic information, anthropometric characteristics, self-efficacy, and acceptability will be included in the survey battery. A research-grade accelerometer will be used to measure free-living physical activity objectively. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistical models under an intention-to-treat approach. This study will be sponsored by the Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence Seed Grant Program from Binghamton University.

Evaluating Treatment Continuation in Telehealth Patients Receiving an Automated Patient-Reported Outcome Tool
Description

Engaging patients through integration of patient-reported outcome measures in routine clinical care can improve the patient experience and provide a systematic way to collect adverse event (AE) data. Collecting these data on a large scale can inform new solutions to longstanding barriers to successful treatment such as medication non-adherence. This study evaluated whether implementing a patient-reported outcome data collection and AE surveillance tool would result in greater treatment continuation for patients receiving care on a telehealth platform. We evaluated how this data collection and surveillance tool - a short prompt for patients to provide information on treatment satisfaction and side effects - impacted the outcome of interest, treatment continuation. We tested two cycles in n=2,000 patients receiving care for erectile dysfunction on a telehealth platform using a randomized control experimental design and accounted for incidents where true randomization was not possible during implementation. The first cycle tested the tool alone, while the second cycle tested the tool in conjunction with a messaging template system that provided standardized side effect counseling.

A Single Session Parenting Intervention for Children on a Outpatient Therapy Waitlist
Description

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice for youth anxiety. However, up to 80% of youth with anxiety disorders do not access the services they need. Child CBT clinics nationwide have extremely long waits, on the order of 10-12 months. This leads to a vicious cycle, as children waiting for care experience worsening symptoms and decreased motivation, so that by the time they access care, their needs are more intensive and the treatment lasts longer and it takes longer for new children to be able to be assigned. Recently, single-session interventions (SSIs) have been developed that enable children to access CBT skills. The proposed randomized trial will evaluate the effects of a brief, web-based, self-guided SSI designed to reduce parent accommodation of children's anxiety, a parenting behavior that has been shown to maintain and worsen child anxiety. The main aim of the study is to examine whether the SSI reduces parent accommodation. As a secondary aim, the investigators will explore whether the SSI reduces children's anxiety symptoms over the first 6 months of CBT. The investigators will recruit parents of children who are on the waitlist to receive outpatient CBT. Results may suggest a promising approach to intervene with parents and children waiting to receive therapy.
