11 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
The purpose of this study is to assess whether APG-157 can reduce the tumor size in participants with the study disease. Another purpose is to find out about the effects of APG-157 on certain tumor markers and oral rinses in participants with the study disease.
Recent literature suggests that certain patients with squamous cell cancers of the head and neck region may benefit from photodynamic therapy whether or not they may have received prior therapy, e.g. radiation therapy
RATIONALE: Photodynamic therapy uses a drug, such as HPPH, that is absorbed by tumor cells. The drug becomes active when it is exposed to light. When the drug is active, tumor cells are killed. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of photodynamic therapy using HPPH in treating patients with recurrent dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, or stage I oral cavity cancer.
RATIONALE: Photodynamic therapy uses a drug that becomes active when it is exposed to a certain kind of light. When the drug is active, tumor cells are killed. Photodynamic therapy using porfimer sodium may be effective against mouth or throat dysplasia and cancer of the mouth and throat. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying how well photodynamic therapy using porfimer sodium works in treating patients with recurrent mouth or throat dysplasia, recurrent in situ cancer of the mouth or throat, or stage I cancer of the mouth or throat.
Primary Objectives: 1. To determine the maximum tolerated dose and transduction efficiency of adenoviral mediated wild type p53 gene transfer in premalignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract. 2. To determine the efficacy of single agent adenoviral mediated wild type p53 gene transfer in reversing oral premalignancies.
The investigators plan to prospectively study breast tissue changes after a short course of Tamoxifen (Tam).
Avmacol is an over-the-counter dietary supplement containing broccoli seed and sprout extracts in tablet form, hypothesized to activate protective cellular pathways including detoxication. In this study, participants who have been curatively treatment for head and neck cancer, will take Avmacol twice a day for 3 months.
This randomized trial studies transdermal or oral telapristone acetate in treating patients undergoing surgery to remove the breast (mastectomy). Telapristone acetate may help prevent breast cancer from forming in premenopausal women. Giving telapristone acetate transdermally may be safer and have fewer side effects than oral administration.
Barrett's esophagus with high-grade dysplasia is a premalignant condition caused by chronic reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. High-grade dysplasia is the same as carcinoma-in-situ. If untreated, patients with this condition are at high risk for developing cancer of the esophagus. Cancer of the esophagus is a miserable disease that is difficult to treat and about 95% fatal after 5 years. To prevent progession to cancer of the esophagus several interventions are available and they include surgery, Photofrin photodynamic therapy, endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic thermal therapy. All of these modalities are uncomfortable, expensive and have associated risks. The oral agent, 852A stimulates the innate immune system in such a way as to eliminate early cancer. A similar dermatologic drug(imiquimod) is approved for treating the premalignant condition, actinic keratosis. If local therapy with imiquimod can eliminate a premalignant lesion in the skin, a similar acting drug should be able to do the same for a premalignant lesion in the lining of the esophagus. This study is designed to test that hypothesis.
This research study is creating a way to collect and store specimens and information from participants who may be at an increased risk of developing cancer, or has been diagnosed with an early phase of a cancer or a family member who has a family member with a precursor condition for cancer. * The objective of this study is to identify exposures as well as clinical, molecular, and pathological changes that can be used to predict early development of cancer, malignant transformation, and risks of progression to symptomatic cancer that can ultimately be fatal. * The ultimate goal is to identify novel markers of early detection and risk stratification to drive potential therapeutic approaches to intercept progression to cancer.
This study is being done to see whether Avmacol®, a dietary supplement made from broccoli sprout and seed extract powder, induces changes in inner cheek cells that may be protective against environmental toxins such as tobacco. There are three main goals of the study: 1. To learn whether the dietary supplement, Avmacol®, can stimulate cheek cells to repair damage from environmental toxins; 2. to learn how the body metabolizes Avmacol®, by measuring its byproducts in the participant's urine and blood; 3. to learn whether the immune system can be stimulated by Avmacol®, by studying the natural killer cells and T cells in the participant's blood.
