The purpose of this study is to evaluate patients with low back pain who are scheduled to begin physical therapy but have not yet had their first appointment to better understand their beliefs and attitudes and to evaluate the effects of an educational session about low back pain.
The purpose of this study is to determine if giving an injection of numbing medication at the incision at the end of cesarean will help control pain AFTER cesarean delivery. This study seeks to assess pain relief with incisional infiltration of local anesthetic during cesareans performed under spinal anesthesia also using intrathecal opioids. Participants will receive the usual regimen of pain medication in spinal anesthesia. At the end of the cesarean delivery, while the participants are still under the spinal medication, participants will receive an injection, at the incision, either numbing medication (with or without epinephrine) or sterile saline. After the cesarean delivery, participants will receive, by mouth, commonly prescribed pain medications - these medications are oxycodone (an opioid/ narcotic), acetaminophen (or more commonly known as Tylenol), and ibuprofen.
The purpose of this pilot study is to conduct research to determine the most effective physical therapy treatment for a condition called shoulder impingement. This condition occurs when tissue in the shoulder is caught between the humerus (arm bone) and the scapula (shoulder blade). This causes pain when one tries to reach overhead or behind the back. Two treatment methods will be used in the study. The first method uses the traditional treatments of hands-on shoulder stretching, shoulder exercise, posture, and education. The second method will use the traditional methods of shoulder treatment in addition to treatment of the cervical spine. It is hypothesized that a group of patients between 40 and 70 years of age with signs and symptoms of shoulder impingement who receive physical therapy to the cervical spine and shoulder will report a higher level of functioning, will report less pain, and will gain more range of motion than a group of patients receiving physical therapy solely to the shoulder.
Robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) is the standard treatment for prostate cancer, due to the benefits of decreased blood loss and length of stay.The procedure involves removing a man's prostate using a minimally invasive robotic approach under the guidance of a surgeon. In order to gain sufficient access, carbon dioxide (CO2) is used to fill the surgical space in a process termed insufflation. Carbon dioxide is a mainstay in laparoscopic procedures because it is cost-effective, noncombustible and readily excreted via the respiratory system in healthy patients. Insufflation with CO2, however, has been linked to post-operative referred pain secondary to peritoneal acidosis.This acidosis is suspected to be due to the formation of carbonic acid from the CO2 insufflation.Peritoneal acidosis, and its associated post-operative referred pain, may not be adequately treated with the current standard pain control regimen.
