Effectiveness Trial of Youth Suicide Prevention Delivered by Teen Peer Leaders
Description

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the school-based Sources of Strength program in reducing suicidal behaviors in the population of high school students and determine how the program works (mechanisms of change). Sources of Strength trains diverse high school students as Peer Leaders, who conduct school-wide prevention messaging activities with ongoing adult mentoring designed to increase positive coping norms and practices, help-seeking and increase youth-adult connections. Sources of Strength is expected to enhance school coping practices, increase help-seeking among distressed and suicidal youth, and reduce the number of students in the population who attempt suicide. A total of 40 high schools in primarily rural and micropolitan regions of New York State and North Dakota will participate in this study that uses a randomized wait-listed design.

Peer-Led Diet and Exercise Intervention
Description

The majority of older Veterans do not meet the minimum healthy diet or physical activity recommendations, despite known benefits. Identifying novel ways to increase adherence to rehabilitation programs that improve dietary quality and physical activity may reduce the risk of disability in older Veterans. Peer-based interventions may be one method to facilitate lasting behavioral change since peers often share a common culture and knowledge about the problems that their community experiences. The investigators propose to develop and evaluate a novel peer-led diet and exercise intervention that targets older Veterans with multiple chronic health conditions. Successful development and pilot of this intervention will provide the preliminary data for a larger multisite trial focused on the use of peer-led interventions to improve long-term compliance to lifestyle interventions in older Veterans.

The Body Project: Comparing the Effectiveness of an In-person and Virtually Delivered Intervention.
Description

This present study will compare the efficacy of in-person versus virtually-delivered Body Project groups. It will also evaluate whether this body acceptance class produces greater reductions in eating disorder risk factor symptoms (pursuit of the thin ideal, body dissatisfaction, dieting, dietary restraint, negative affect, eating disorder symptoms, and the future onset of eating disorders over a 3-month follow-up in this population. It will also evaluate the effectiveness of this body acceptance class's ability to impact social appearance anxiety, body compassion, and self-stigma surrounding attaining help.

Peer-Led Dissonance Eating Disorder Prevention: Virtual Delivery
Description

Implementation Support for Prevention Program Delivery by College Peer Educators
Description

This project will evaluate 3 approaches of implementation support for university peer leaders who will deliver a prevention program with a particularly strong evidence-base compared to changes observed in outcomes in response to usual care at the universities before implementation. This study aims to advance knowledge of this innovative and economical way to provide college prevention programs to reduce the burden of mental illness in the college student population.

Peer-Led Self-Management Support in "Real World" Clinical and Community Settings
Description

This study will systematically evaluate a training program in state-of-the-art behavioral change approaches and facilitation skills for peer leaders and a peer-led diabetes self-management support program designed to be conducted in community and clinic-based settings on an ongoing basis.

Teen Asthma Project
Description

Aims of this study are: 1. To determine the feasibility of implementing the intervention using a peer-assisted asthma day camp for adolescents with asthma. 2. To determine patterns of change in knowledge, attitudes toward asthma, self-efficacy, perception of barriers, and self-management behaviors, asthma control and quality of life over time among peer leaders. 3. To test the following hypothesis: * Adolescents participating in a peer-assisted asthma camp program will report improved knowledge, attitudes toward asthma, self-efficacy, and self-management behaviors, decreased perception of barriers, and increased asthma control and quality of life at 3-, 6- and 9-months post-intervention compared with the adult-led camp group. 4. To examine the moderating effect of personal factors (e.g., age, sex, socioeconomic status, race, illness status, family support) on intervention outcomes such as self-management behaviors, asthma control and quality of life in adolescents with asthma. 5. To examine the effect of the peer-assisted camp program on self-reported health care utilization including emergency department visits, days of hospitalization, outpatient visits by comparing between baseline and 9-months post-camp data and between the peer-led camp and the adult-camp programs.
