Testing a Personalized Normative Feedback Intervention for Vaccine Hesitancy
Description

Rationale: The highest rates of coronavirus disease (i.e., COVID-19) vaccine hesitancy in the US are among young adults (YAs) aged 18-25. Our preliminary studies show that social norms - perceptions of peers' vaccination attitudes/behaviors - are most strongly related to YAs' vaccine intentions/uptake. Most YAs underestimate the perceived importance of vaccination and their peers' intentions to be vaccinated. The proposed research will develop and test an intervention to correct misperceived norms for vaccination hesitancy and uptake. Methodology: Rapid prototyping with 20 unvaccinated YAs will help refine the content and design of the online intervention. Then, a diverse national sample (N=600) of unvaccinated YAs will be randomized to treatment or an attention-matched control. The treatment condition will receive personalized normative feedback (PNF) designed to correct normative misperceptions for vaccine hesitancy and uptake. Normative feedback will be derived from the US Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey. Follow-up surveys will be administered at 1, 2, 3, and 6 months to assess key outcomes including vaccine uptake, intentions, and reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Aims and Data Analysis: * Aim 1: Develop and refine a PNF intervention for vaccine hesitancy/uptake with user feedback from YAs. Rapid analysis of qualitative data will involve looking for themes in responses. Changes will be made iteratively to refine intervention content, design, and delivery. * Aim 2: Evaluate intervention efficacy for increasing vaccine uptake and reducing time to first vaccine dose, relative to control, over the following year. * Aim 3: Examine mediators (changes in perceived norms) and moderators (intellectual humility, identification with other people and young adults) of intervention efficacy. A longitudinal moderated mediation model will be examined. Impact: Findings will clarify the causal role of psychological determinants of vaccine hesitancy (social norms, intellectual humility, group identification). If preliminary intervention efficacy is supported, this intervention could be a low-cost, and easily disseminated strategy to promote YAs' vaccine uptake and contribute to public health efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Social Media Personalized Normative Feedback Intervention for Heavy Drinking College Students
Description

This study seeks to evaluate the unique and synergistic efficacy of social media-specific personalized normative feedback targeting the reduction of alcohol use among heavy-drinking college students who post alcohol-related content on social media. Hypothesis: Alcohol personalized normative feedback, social media-specific personalized normative feedback, and the Alcohol personalized normative feedback+ social media-specific personalized normative feedback conditions will be more effective in reducing drinking than the attention control condition.

A Gamified, Social Media Inspired Personalized Normative Feedback Alcohol Intervention for Sexual Minority Women
Description

Sexual minority women in the United States are more likely to drink alcohol, engage in heavy drinking, and experience alcohol-related problems than are heterosexual women. Yet, to date, no evidence-based intervention or prevention efforts have been developed to reduce alcohol consumption among female sexual minority community members. The proposed research seeks to narrow the disparity in alcohol intervention research by examining an innovative gamified personalized normative feedback (PNF) intervention to reduce drinking among sexual minority women found to frequent social media sites and overestimate norms related to peers' general alcohol use and drinking to cope with sexual minority stigma. The newly developed GANDR (Gamified Alcohol Norm Discovery and Readjustment) PNF format takes the well-established core components of a PNF alcohol intervention and delivers these components within an inviting, social media inspired, culturally-tailored online competition. This incognito intervention format is designed to be more appealing, engaging, believable, positively received, and thus effective than standard web-based PNF. The version developed for sexual minority women delivers PNF on alcohol use and stigma-coping behaviors within the context of an online game about sexual minority female stereotypes. Following two introductory rounds of play by a large cohort of sexual minority women, a sub-sample of 500 sexual minority female drinkers will be invited to participate in an evaluation study. Study participants will be randomized to receive 1 of 3 unique sequences of feedback (i.e., Alcohol \& Stigma-Coping, Alcohol \& Control, or Control topics only) during 2 intervention rounds taking place over a 6-month period. The randomized feedback sequences and multiple rounds of play will allow the research team to evaluate whether PNF on alcohol use reduces sexual minority women's alcohol consumption and negative consequences relative to PNF on control topics (AIM 2: H1), examine whether providing PNF on stigma-coping behaviors in addition to alcohol use further reduces alcohol use and consequences beyond alcohol PNF alone (AIM 2: H2), and identify mediators and moderators of intervention effectiveness (AIM 3).

Evaluating Within-Person and Between-Person Effects Of A Personalized Normative Feedback Intervention On Drinking As They Are Moderated By Self-Determination
Description

This study evaluates within-person and between-person effects of a personalized normative feedback intervention and injunctive norms as they are altered by self-determination in heavy drinkers. Half of participants will receive personalized normative feedback and the other half will receive control feedback about media use habits.

Testing the Efficacy of a Brief Alcohol Intervention Among College Students
Description

Individuals will be recruited to participate in a randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of a prevention program aimed at reducing alcohol use among college students. If randomized to the intervention, participants will view personalized content based on their alcohol use and chosen identity and learn about various topics related to alcohol use, including ways to reduce their use. Control participants will be directed to a website where information regarding mental health and substance use may be found. Baseline mental health, alcohol use, and related constructs will be assessed. Participants will complete a 3-month follow-up survey to assess the efficacy of the tool in symptom reduction.
