This phase II trial studies the side effects and how well selumetinib sulfate works in treating patients with low-grade ovarian cancer that has come back (recurrent). Selumetinib sulfate may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth.
This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of giving 7-hydroxystaurosporine together with irinotecan hydrochloride in treating patients with metastatic or unresectable solid tumors, including triple-negative breast cancer (currently enrolling only patients with triple-negative breast cancer since 6/8/2007). Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Giving 7-hydroxystaurosporine together with irinotecan hydrochloride may help kill more cancer cells by making tumor cells more sensitive to the drug.
RATIONALE: Squalamine lactate may stop or slow the growth of ovarian cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining squalamine lactate with carboplatin may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining squalamine lactate and carboplatin in treating patients who have recurrent or refractory stage III or stage IV ovarian cancer.

PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of BMS-247550 in treating patients who have metastatic, recurrent, or locally advanced, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or metastatic or unresectable solid tumors.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses x-rays to damage tumor cells. Drugs such as capecitabine may make the tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of capecitabine in combination with radiation therapy in treating patients who have unresectable, residual, or recurrent colorectal cancer located in the pelvis.
This laboratory study is collecting tumor tissue and blood samples from patients with gynecologic tumors. Collecting and storing samples of tumor tissue and blood from patients with cancer to study in the laboratory may help in the study of cancer.
RATIONALE: Finding out which problems affect employment in survivors of gynecologic cancer may help in planning cancer treatment and improve the quality of life of future cancer survivors. PURPOSE: This research study is looking at ways to improve employment in patients who have survived cervical cancer, uterine cancer, or ovarian cancer.
RATIONALE: Biological therapies such as gefitinib may interfere with the growth of the tumor cells and slow the growth of cervical cancer. Comparing results of diagnostic procedures performed before, during, and after treatment with gefitinib may help doctors predict a patient's response to treatment and help plan the most effective treatment. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well gefitinib works in treating patients with cervical cancer.
RATIONALE: Suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for cancer cell growth. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid in treating patients who have advanced cancer.
RATIONALE: Imatinib mesylate may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for cancer cell growth. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to determine the effectiveness of imatinib mesylate in treating patients who have refractory or relapsed ovarian epithelial, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer, or ovarian low malignant potential tumor.

Colony-stimulating factors such as filgrastim may increase the number of immune cells found in bone marrow or peripheral blood and may help a person's immune system recover from the side effects of chemotherapy. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy plus filgrastim in treating patients who have advanced solid tumors.
RATIONALE: Immunotoxins can locate tumor cells and kill them without harming normal cells. Immunotoxin therapy may be an effective treatment for advanced cancer. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of immunotoxins in treating patients who have advanced cancer.
Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of LMB-9 immunotoxin in treating patients who have advanced colon, breast, non-small cell lung, bladder, pancreatic, or ovarian cancer. The LMB-9 immunotoxin can locate tumor cells and kill them without harming normal cells.
RATIONALE: Diagnostic procedures using the drug radiolabeled folic acid and imaging may be effective in detecting ovarian cancer. PURPOSE: Diagnostic trial to study the effectiveness of radiolabeled folic acid plus imaging in detecting ovarian cancer.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more tumor cells. Chemoprotective drugs such as amifostine may protect normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy. PURPOSE: Phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of high-dose melphalan plus peripheral stem cell transplantation and amifostine in treating patients with cancer.
