13 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
Based upon promising results from a pilot study among 424 sedentary older adults who were randomized to a physical activity intervention or a successful aging health education intervention, a Phase 3 multi-center randomized controlled trial is being conducted to compare a moderate-intensity physical activity program to a successful aging health education program in 1,600 sedentary older adults who are followed for an average of 2.7 years. The primary aim was to assess the long-term effects of the proposed interventions on the primary outcome of major mobility disability, defined as inability to walk 400 m.
The purpose of this study is to gather preliminary data that will determine the feasibility of conducting a Phase III, randomized, controlled trial (RCT) that will provide definite evidence in the use of physical exercise to prevent mobility disability in older persons.
Early childhood detection of motor delays or impairments provides the opportunity for early treatment which improves health outcomes. This study will use state of the art sensors combined with machine learning algorithms to develop objective, accurate, easy-to-use tools for the early scoring of deficits and lays the foundation for the early prediction of physical disability.
The purpose of the proposed studies is to examine a reading intervention for fourth grade students with reading difficulties that integrate work in mindset (beliefs about whether abilities are innate or can be developed) with the academic component of reading. Specifically, the investigators will examine the extent to which integrating mindset intervention improves student response to reading intervention. The investigators will use previous research in intensive reading intervention for students with reading difficulties in the upper elementary grades to examine an intervention that addresses reading skill deficits, while also providing mindset training along with (Study 1) or embedded in (Study 2) the reading intervention. It is hypothesized that students in the reading intervention with mindset conditions will improve their reading outcomes more than students in the reading intervention only and business as usual groups.
Several trials have found that nutritional supplementation can elicit an increased rate of skeletal muscle protein synthesis following a single bout of exercise in both young and older individuals. However, there have been no studies that have investigated if nutritional supplementation and exercise can cause a sustained increase in physical functioning and fat free mass, particularly in older adults with functional limitations. This study will compare the effects of a nutritional supplement versus a placebo on exercise training induced changes in physical functioning older adults who are at risk for mobility disability.
The purpose of this study is to understand how to prevent COVID-19 spread in a school like the Mary Cariola Center (MCC) in Rochester, NY by answering questions like these: how do activities in the school alter chances of infection? Are there people infected with the COVID-19 virus who have no symptoms? How is spread of COVID-19 affected by vaccination rates? Is there any hesitancy to get the vaccine and what are the reasons? This information will be used to help keep the school open and the students and staff safe. Eligible participants are those that work at the Mary Cariola Center (MCC) and interact with the students at MCC who have a high risk of infection from COVID-19. The study lasts for up to 16 months.
The purpose of this study is to determine which of the following four service models is most effective for reducing fall risk among home-delivered meal clients: (1) meals alone, (2) meals + registered dietitian services, (3) meals + occupational therapy services, (4) meals + registered dietitian + occupational therapy services.
Suicide is a national crisis, especially among older Veterans for whom evidence-based suicide prevention efforts are lacking. This proposal responds to the national priority to develop and improve interventions for suicide prevention, with a focus on at-risk older Veterans. The randomized control trial will compare VA usual care, which is suicide safety planning, with brief Problem Solving Therapy and suicide safety planning. This study uses Problem Solving Therapy because it has support from our pilot data and from secondary data analysis from other studies for reducing late life suicide risk. This treatment also has support for alleviating two key risk factors for late life suicide risk, functional disability and executive dysfunction, and thus this study will examine how older Veterans with varying levels of functional disability and executive functioning respond to treatment to inform future targeted implementation. In accordance with national priorities, existing infrastructure in Problem Solving Training could be expanded to support more rapid VA-wide implementation.
Background: Several risk score models are now available to assist clinicians estimate outcomes after an acute ischemic stroke. Limited information is available on the predictive value of these scores compared to real outcomes and clinical judgment. Objectives: To compare clinician judgment with the use of a validated stroke risk score (iScore) and patients' outcomes.

The objective of this study is to determine the effects of a 6-month, home-based personalized transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) intervention targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on cognitive function, dual task standing and walking, and other metrics of mobility in older adults with motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR).
