Online Intervention for Transgender/Nonbinary Young Adults' Experiences With Alcohol and Romantic Relationships
Description

The objective of this study is to learn more about Whole Selves, an interactive online resource ("intervention") to help transgender and/or nonbinary young adults reflect on their experiences and goals related to both alcohol use and romantic relationships. Existing online interventions focused on alcohol use often aren't a good fit for trans/nonbinary people, and existing relationship education programs don't account for how being trans/nonbinary might influence someone's relationships. For these reasons, the investigator is working with trans/nonbinary young adults and other community stakeholders to create a new intervention specifically for trans/nonbinary young adults. The goals of this clinical trial are to: 1. Find out what transgender/nonbinary young adults think of the Whole Selves intervention in order to improve it 2. See whether the Whole Selves intervention seems to work as expected 3. Help the investigator make plans for a bigger clinical trial of the Whole Selves intervention, which could tell us how well it works In this study, participants will use the Whole Selves intervention; complete online surveys about themselves, their romantic relationship experiences, their mental health, their alcohol use; and provide feedback on the Whole Selves intervention.

Mindfulness and Romantic Relationship Quality
Description

The overarching aim of this proposal is to experimentally test whether a mindfulness intervention improves relationship quality. Romantic couples from the community will be randomly assigned to one of two arms: mindfulness vs. active control. Both interventions will be completed on a smart-phone for 14 days using identical intervention activities as our existing published research. After the 14-day period, couples will attend a lab visit and provide relationship quality data.

Automated & Coached Web-based Programs to Improve and Strengthen Romantic Relationships
Description

This study investigates the effectiveness of self-help, web-based programs to improve romantic relationships and related outcomes. Couples will be randomly assigned to complete the OurRelationship program, the ePREP program, the OurRelationship program with the addition of a coach, the ePREP program with the addition of a coach, or a wait-list control group and followed for six months.

Expansion of Childhood Relationship Study to Young Adult Romantic Relationships
Description

Background: - An earlier study on child development focused on the relationship between children and their caregivers (usually mothers). It looked at how this relationship influenced children's social and mental development. It also studied how these children related with family members and friends. Researchers are now interested in expanding the study with the same group of children. They want to look at these children, who are now young adults, and focus on their current romantic relationships. This new study will look at how child development affects the formation of stable, mature romantic relationships in young adulthood. Original child study participants and their significant others will be included in the new study. Only participants who are living together with a partner will be studied. Objectives: - To look at romantic partnerships in a childhood study s original participants and their significant others. Eligibility: * Participants of the 88-CH-32 study who are at least 18 years of age. * Significant others of the study participants who are at least 18 years of age. * Original participants and significant others must be cohabiting (living together). Design: * No screening tests will be required for this study. No study visits will be needed. Samples will not be collected. * Original study participants will fill out four online questionnaires. They will be on a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHHD) website. They will ask personal questions about relationships with the current romantic partner and other important people. The questions will take about 25 minutes to answer. * Significant others will fill out 13 online questionnaires. They will be on a NICHHD website. They will ask personal questions about the romantic partner and other important people. The questions will take about 1.5 hours to answer. * All participants will receive a small amount of money for completing the study.

Couples' Affect in Relationships Study
Description

The goal of this clinical trial is to find out whether learning about well-being impacts the thoughts and feelings of romantic couples. The main question it aims to answer is: * Does gaining knowledge about well-being positively impact individuals and their romantic relationships? Participants will complete online surveys about their thoughts and feelings.

Healthy Relationships Training Study: A Comparison of Interventions to Reduce Dating Violence on College Campuses
Description

The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of a mindfulness-based skills training (MBST) to a psychoeducational intervention at reducing dating violence in a sample of college students. The MBST focuses on improving college students' abilities to manage emotionally charged states during conflict with their romantic partners by teaching them mindfulness-based skills. The psychoeducational intervention uses the Love is Not Abuse curriculum. Treatment groups are randomly assigned and are compared using a two-armed parallel design. 88 college students currently in a dating relationship were recruited through Kent State University's subject pool. All participants completed a baseline assessment online where self-reported data was collected on demographics, dating violence (during the past month), emotion regulation, mindfulness skills, and other potential covariates. Participants were then randomized into either the MBST intervention or the psychoeducational intervention. All participants completed three 50-minute sessions over the course of three weeks with assigned homework between sessions. Daily diary data was collected, assessing knowledge and use of skills learned in the sessions. Follow-up data was collected online 11 weeks following baseline (dating violence (during the last month), emotion regulation, mindfulness skills). It was hypothesized that the MBST intervention would be more effective at reducing dating violence as compared to the psychoeducational intervention.

Study to Understand Pain Experiences in Relationships
Description

Chronic pain is a highly prevalent and costly health care problem. Yet, little is known about the optimal ways for health care providers and family members to respond to the distress expressed by people with chronic pain. The aim of the current study is to compare two models of responsiveness to identify responses that result in better functioning and adjustment. An experimental design will be used to test the extent to which emotional validation (e.g., an empathic response to distress) increases or decreases pain behaviors during physical activity. Romantic partners of individuals with chronic pain will be randomly assigned to receive validation or control training. Following training, people with chronic pain and their partners will engage in a discussion about pain and complete household tasks to examine the effects of partner training on communication, pain intensity, and pain behavior. Additionally, each individual in the couple will complete self-report measures after the discussion, after the household tasks, and one-month following the laboratory visit.
