Understanding Sports Nutrition Knowledge of High School Athletes and Influencers
Description

The objective of this testing is to gain a better understanding of sports nutrition knowledge in high school athletes and their influencers (coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, athletic therapists, dieticians). Since the sports nutrition knowledge of the high school athletes will be limited, nutrition behaviors will be assessed to infer knowledge of sports nutrition. The secondary objective is to determine the primary sources of nutrition knowledge in these populations.

Efficacy Of "Prodovite®" In Athletic Performance
Description

A novel patent-pending "Prodovite®" VMP35 Multi-Nutrient-Complex (MNC), a vitamin, mineral, and phytonutrient encapsulated liquid formulation, was prepared using a novel proprietary SK713 SLP multi-lamellar non-GMO phospholipid nutrient absorption/delivery technology in a state-of-the-art multistep cGMP and NSF-certified manufacturing facility. This developmental technology is biodegradable and biocompatible. Preliminary study in our laboratory demonstrated the efficacy of "Prodovite®" VMP35 in Sports Nutrition. The investigators hypothesize that "Prodovite®" VMP35 supplement will enhance strength, endurance, and athletic performance; and improve energy output, lean-body muscle mass, increase exercise tolerance, recovery, and improve anabolic parameters in healthy human subjects. The aim of this randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study is to evaluate the effect of oral supplementation of "Prodovite®" VMP35 on the parameters. The investigators hypothesize that "Prodovite®" VMP35 supplementation will enhance all the athletic parameters and improve blood chemistry parameters in healthy human subjects. Accordingly, 150 healthy male and female subjects will be randomly assigned to receive either "Prodovite®" VMP35 or placebo in the form of single dose sealed containers for 90 consecutive days and muscle strength, endurance, speed, anabolic/catabolic parameters and muscle mass will be evaluated by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), hand-grip strength test, cycle ergometer test, spirometer assessment and assay of Blood chemistry and serum biomarkers will be evaluated before and after intervention.

Knowledge of Nutritional Concerns in Physically Active Females
Description

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether implementation of an educational tool for nutritional concerns in 18-25-year-old females who participate in sport increases their understanding of various nutritional concerns. By studying an educational tool geared towards nutritional concerns of the female athlete, clinicians can use the information to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes. Procedure: Participants will be asked to complete a previously validated survey assessing knowledge of nutritional concerns of female athletes: the Female Athlete Triad, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, and eating disorders. The survey will be completed immediately pre- and post-receipt of the educational intervention. The intervention includes education on the previously mentioned nutritional concerns.

Game on Philly: Engaging Underserved Middle School Youth in Out-of- School Time Sports and Nutrition Education
Description

Game on Philly is a multi-component out-of-school time intervention delivered by trained sport-based youth development coaches and health navigators using evidenced-based programming. The program evaluation assesses the impact of this minimal-risk intervention to reduce the prevalence of obesity-related health disparities in racial and ethnic minority middle school youth. The program is a virtual sport-based youth development program, supplemented with nutrition education. The program was modified due to Covid-19 and is entirely virtual. Using a quasi-experimental design, six schools are assigned to the intervention arm and six schools are assigned to the comparison arm. Participants in intervention schools receive access to daily, online after school programming, with live sessions with sports providers (via Zoom), weekly team meetings with a health coach (via Zoom), text-messages via the Remind app, and the monthly delivery of Activity Kits directly to their homes for six months. Comparison school participants receive access to the Game on Philly app with workout and sports content and receive one activity kit delivery at the start of the program. Parent-child dyads recruited from each school complete surveys at baseline and at the end of the 6-month program (follow-up). It is hypothesized that youth participating in the intervention will experience significantly greater increases in physical activity at the end of the 6-month intervention compared to youth participating in the comparison arm (primary outcome). Secondary outcomes will examine changes in dietary intake, self-efficacy for physical activity and positive youth development.

Description

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a 30 day beef intervention can improve peak cognitive performance in young, normally menstruating adult women. The control group will consume a daily portion of macronutrient equivalent vegetable source of protein.

YES! We Can PLAY: A Physical Activity and Nutrition After-School Program for Middle School Students
Description

YES! We can PLAY: A Physical Activity and Nutrition After-School Program for Middle School Students, is a collaborative partnership between the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Birmingham City Schools District to decrease health disparities in obesity and obesity-related diseases by increasing physical activity levels and healthy eating behavior among Birmingham youth. Through the after-school program in which children choose from a menu of sports programming, the proposed intervention will increase physical literacy of the students through education related to both physical activity and nutrition as well as social-emotional learning which will increase students' ability to integrate the information and activities of the program into their lives moving forward.
