13 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
The goal of this clinical trial is to compare photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in addition to standard of care in the treatment of tibial and metatarsal bone stress injuries in a military training setting. Participants will all receive usual care and also be randomized to either active or sham photobiomodulation therapy. Effectiveness will be assessed based on time to return to duty and measures of pain and function. * Participants will receive care for a maximum of 6 weeks. * Participants will have follow-up through 4 months (or graduation/dismissal from training, whichever comes first).
Stress fractures are a common and debilitating injury for a variety of athletes however current evidence does not clearly allow easy prediction of athletes at risk for a first fracture. Animal and some preliminary human evidence suggest that assessment of bone strength, muscle size and running mechanics may be primary risk factors for stress fractures. The investigators study will help determine which, if any, of these modifiable risk factors could help identify athletes at risk for stress fracture. Competitive female distance runners will be recruited for this study. Participants will placed into a stress fracture or control group based on stress fracture history. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT) will be used to assess bone structure and strength. Running mechanics will be assessed during a 30-40 minute fatiguing run. A treadmill with an embedded force plate and high speed video will be used to assess changes in running mechanics throughout the run. The purpose of this project will be to 1. explore differences in volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), bone geometry, and muscle cross sectional area (MCSA) using pQCT 2. explore changes in load (GRFs) and running mechanics that occur during a fatiguing run in runners with and without a history of stress fracture.
We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial of calcium and vitamin D supplementation in 5201 female Naval recruits. During 8 weeks of basic training, supplementation with 2000 mg calcium and 800 IU vitamin D/day decreased incidence of stress fracture by 25%. The hypothesis was: Supplementation with calcium 2000 mg/d and vitamin D 800 IU/d will significantly reduce the incidence of stress fractures in female Navy recruits during 8 weeks of basic training.
The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether or not there is a correlation between MRI and ultrasound for the diagnosis of lower limb stress injuries. Patients that are seen at the University of Iowa Sports Medicine Center with a suspected diagnosis of a lower limb stress injury will be recruited. These patients will undergo a diagnostic ultrasound of the affected region prior to undergoing an MRI of that region. Then, the ultrasound findings will be compared to the MRI findings to determine if a correlation exists.
The project goals are to improve combat readiness of U.S. Soldiers and sustain the availability of the military to deploy by, 1) decreasing the number of days not physically ready for duty after diagnosis of a diaphyseal tibial stress fracture, 2) decreasing the need for a physical profile or medical discharge board after bone stress injury, and 3) decreasing the recurrence rates of bone stress injuries.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of a single dose of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on post-exercise markers of bone and muscle metabolism.
Post Market clinical outcomes study to collect data on the short - and long-term outcomes for subjects who are undergoing or who have undergone the Subchondroplasty Procedure in the foot and/or ankle in a standard clinical setting. Outcomes to be assessed include pain medication usage, pain, function, activity levels and patient satisfaction.

The primary aim of this investigation is to prospectively and clinically validate a novel, reproducible method of quantitative application of compressive stress to a LC1 pelvic ring injury of indeterminate stability for the purpose of assessing quantitative pelvic ring displacement.
The proposed study evaluates the effect of carbon fiber brace design on forces across the ankle. Research suggests that ankle arthritis develops following ankle fracture due, in part, to elevated forces on the cartilage. It is expected that carbon fiber braces can reduce forces in the ankle joint thereby reducing the risk of developing arthritis following injury. In this study, carbon fiber braces will be tested to determine how they influence the forces acting on the ankle cartilage. The proposed study will provide evidence that can be used by clinicians and researchers to design carbon fiber braces to effectively reduce forces on ankle cartilage.

The goal of this study is to perform a randomized clinical trial to assess the effects of vitamin C versus placebo on wound healing in mandibular fracture patients.
Pain is common in children presenting to the emergency department but is frequently undertreated, leading to both short- and long-term consequences. Morphine is the standard treatment for children with moderate to severe acute pain, but its use is associated with serious side effects and caregiver and clinician concerns related to opioid administration. The investigators aim to determine if sub-dissociative ketamine is non-inferior to morphine for treating acute pain and a preferable alternative for treating acute pain in children because of its more favorable side effect profile and potential long-term benefits related to pain-related function, analgesic use/misuse, and mental and behavioral health outcomes.
