Evaluation of an Absorbable Surgical Hemostatic Agent: Thrombi-Gel® Versus Gelfoam-Thrombin
Description

This trial is designed as a prospective, multi-center, randomized, feasibility clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Thrombi-Gel as an absorbable surgical hemostat. Within this clinical evaluation, Thrombi-Gel will be compared to the current standard of care, a gelatin sponge (Gelfoam) plus Thrombin JMI, by using a 2:1 randomization ratio. Subjects will be randomized to one of two (2) treatment groups. One (1) group will be treated with Thrombi-Gel, while one (1) group will be treated with the gelatin sponge plus thrombin. All study data will be analyzed according to the subjects' assigned randomization group assignment, regardless of the treatment actually delivered.

Management of Bleeding Following Cardiopulmonary Bypass
Description

We believe ongoing bleeding during complex cardiac surgery can be accurately measured and that administration of a specific blood product replacement strategy designed to optimally slow or stop the bleeding can be followed by the during the operation. Patients at risk of significant bleeding after complex cardiac surgery will be approached to allow their operation to be watched by study personnel to see if ongoing blood loss can be accurately measured and to see how quickly a prescribed, standardized blood product replacement protocol to control the bleeding does slow or stop the bleeding. Permission to review the medical record to see if bleeding risk features can be identified and permission to follow the patient after surgery to see how they recover is also requested.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Fibrin Sealant, Vapor Heated, Solvent/Detergent-treated with 500 IU/ml thrombin and synthetic aprotinin (FS VH S/D 500 s-apr) for hemostasis in participants receiving prosthetic expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) conduits as compared to a control group treated by manual compression with surgical gauze pads.

Description

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the application of Fibrin Sealant Grifols provides a measurable benefit when compared to hemostasis achieved through conventional surgical technique (suture) and by standard hemostatic action, such as mechanical pressure through manual compression. This study has a Preliminary Part (I) in which all subjects are treated with Fibrin Sealant Grifols and a Primary Part (II) in which subjects are randomized in a 2:1 ratio to either Fibrin Sealant Grifols or manual compression.

Hemostasis in Open Acetabulum and Pelvic Ring Surgery Using Tranexamic Acid
Description

This study is investigating the use of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients with pelvis and/or hip socket fractures that require surgery. TXA is FDA-approved in patients with hemophilia for short-term use to reduce hemorrhage and the need for replacement blood during tooth extraction. However, it has also been used extensively in severely injured patients after major trauma and during elective hip and knee replacements. Previous studies indicate TXA may reduce blood loss and the need for blood transfusions while being safe for use in most patients. TXA is fairly inexpensive and easy to obtain. The purpose of this study is to determine if TXA will make surgery in patients with pelvis and/or hip socket fractures safer and more cost efficient.

CoSeal for Hemostasis of Aortic Anastamoses
Description

Surgery on the aorta can be associated with significant blood loss. Most commonly this is due to bleeding at the site of aortic anastomosis. Surgical bleeding is associated with significant morbidity. One way to prevent bleeding is to use a special glue (sealant) after performing large connections on the aorta. The goal of this study is to compare the different methods surgeons use to stop/prevent bleeding. The study team will collect medical information about patients before, during, and after surgery on their aortas, including the methods used to prevent bleeding. This information may help doctors improve the way that they care for these patients.
