4 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
The purpose of this study is to assess whether Optiflow, a high-flow humidified oxygen delivery system, is superior to standard oxygen therapy during breaks off noninvasive ventilation in patients affected by acute respiratory failure and in respiratory distress. The investigators anticipate that the Optiflow will provide oxygen more effectively, be more comfortable and permit longer breaks off NIV, shortening the total duration of NIV.
Previous investigations and anecdotal experience have shown safety and utility of Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation/Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (NIPPV/BiPAP) for the treatment of asthma in children. If NIPPV/BiPAP can be shown to have a beneficial effect in children with respiratory insufficiency, emergency department and ICU stays may be shortened, and the need for more invasive and dangerous airway procedures may be decreased. This would result in a change in the standard of care for asthma treatment in emergency departments. The investigators hypothesis is that the use of this new NIPPV, in conjunction with current standard of care therapies, in acute moderate to severe asthma exacerbations will lead to a more rapid improvement in patient ventilation, faster resolution of respiratory distress, and overall improved secondary outcomes.
The purposes of the study are to determine the energy balance and evaluate the nutritional status of patients with ALS, and to investigate the use of NIPPV as respiratory support to treat patients with ALS.
This is a small pilot study to look at the feasibility of creating a customized sleep mask for use with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or other similar treatments for sleep apnea. The participant will have three dimensional (3D) pictures of the face taken by special cameras. The pictures will be sent to a 3D printer and a mask will be created based on the participant's face contours. The participant will use the mask for about 6 months. The study will measure the amount it is used during sleep and if there is an increase in reported comfort.
