4 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
For too many women, childbirth results in devastating consequences: involuntary loss of feces or urine (fecal or urinary incontinence). In fact, up to 50 percent of women with severe tears during childbirth may develop these problems. These new mothers avoid leaving home in order to stay close to a toilet, wear protective pads every day, and avoid activities they previously enjoyed such as exercise and sexual intercourse. It is not surprising that many of these women suffer from postpartum depression, and bonding with their newborns is compromised. Fecal and urinary incontinence occur due to injuries to the pelvic nerves and muscles during childbirth. Many researchers have focused on what can be done to prevent these injuries; however, few have investigated how to help the countless women who have already suffered from these injuries to the nerves and muscles. In other fields such as orthopedics and neurology, research shows that electrical stimulation can provoke nerve regeneration after injury. Applying this technology to women who have recently suffered from nerve injury during childbirth could have profound and life-changing effects. Investigators hypothesize that electrical stimulation immediately postpartum will markedly help pelvic nerves regenerate, minimizing rates of fecal and urinary incontinence for this vulnerable population of new mothers.
The goal of the study is to evaluate the use of a personal intravaginal, non- implanted electrical stimulation device in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain. The investigators propose a randomized controlled trial comparing the investigated device to a sham device. The primary outcome is pain control using the visual analog scale and brief pain inventory (18). Hypothesis: Subjects will report increased pain relief with the electrical stimulation device compared to those using the sham device alone.
This prospective study compares quality of life measures of patients with refractory overactive bladder, between two modes of neuromodulation: vaginal electrical stimulation (Group A) and sacral nerve stimulation (Group B). The specific aims are: 1. To characterize patient symptom bother score, quality of life, and body image scores in patients obtaining sacral nerve stimulation, as compared to vaginal electrical stimulation. - Hypothesis 1: Both modes of neuromodulation will impact patients' scores in quality of life, patient symptoms, and body image questionnaires.
The investigators research project is a randomized, controlled, single-blinded, feasibility pilot study. The investigators will study the feasibility of a novel treatment for women with Provoked Localized Vulvodynia (PLV) with acupuncture and 5% lidocaine cream. Lidocaine is a numbing agent and common first treatment for this disorder. Acupuncture is a treatment commonly used for other pain disorders. The investigators will compare two types of acupuncture (classical and non-classical) as a treatment for PLV, in addition to 5% lidocaine cream. Researchers want to determine if acupuncture is acceptable and convenient to women with PLV. The investigators hypothesize that classical acupuncture and 5% lidocaine cream will be better than non-classical acupuncture and 5% lidocaine cream to decrease PLV pain.
