15 Clinical Trials for Various Conditions
The primary aims of this pilot study were to (1) initially validate the applicability of a human laboratory model of relapse initially developed for smokers to e-cigarette users; (2) to use this human laboratory model of lapse behavior to examine the effects of acute psychological stress on vaping-lapse behavior among adults who are experienced, e-cigarette users.
This randomized controlled trial aims to examine the effects of high-impact e-cigarette advertisement features among young adults of various tobacco-use statuses. Previous research on examining the effects of e-cigarette advertisement features found that flavor-related features (e.g., flavor-associated product color, name and image, flavor sensation descriptor, and flavor choice claim) may have the largest impact on shaping young adults' perceptions and use intentions of e-cigarettes. No research so far has solely focused on examining the effects of those high-impact flavor-related advertisement features. The present study assessed the effects of high-impact flavor-related advertisement features, including flavor descriptor name, e-cigarette product color (which indicates flavors), flavor-related image, flavor sensation descriptor, and flavor choice claim on perceptions and behavioral intentions among a large online sample of young adults aged 18-30 who either smoke cigarettes or do not use tobacco products. The study is a six-group RCT with parallel assignments that will be delivered through an online self-administered questionnaire consisting of one session. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of six trial arms: 1) dark gray product with tobacco flavor name, 2) dark gray product with strawberry flavor name, 3) colorful (strawberry color) product with strawberry flavor name, 4) colorful (strawberry color) product with strawberry flavor name and strawberry image, 5) colorful (strawberry color) product with strawberry flavor name, strawberry image, strawberry flavor sensation descriptor, and 6) colorful (strawberry color) product with strawberry flavor name, strawberry image, strawberry flavor sensation descriptor, and flavor choice claim. Participants will be exposed to one advertisement corresponding to the assigned condition, and answer survey questions immediately after message exposure.
The purpose of this trial is to determine whether a vaping prevention text message program reduces susceptibility to vaping among adolescents and young adults. This study addresses this issue by exposing participants to a vaping prevention text message program over a 28-day period in a randomized controlled trial with a matched attention control condition. A follow-up assessment is also made 4 weeks after the text messaging ends.
The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to determine whether e-cigarette warnings increase intentions to quit vaping without the unintended consequence of pushing users toward smoking. This trial addresses these issues by evaluating the impact of e-cigarette warnings by randomly assigning vapers to have their devices and refills labeled with control messages, text warnings, or pictorial warnings. Participants will be US adult (ages 21+) vapers. The trial expects \~1,200 participants to complete Visits 1, 3, and 5.
There is little published data on exposure to and evaluations of large-scale, online tobacco control campaigns. This project addresses the gap. Under 2 specific aims, the investigators will identify the independent effects of varying levels of digital message exposure to promote anti-tobacco attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors among youth and young adults, first through a randomized experiment online, and second through a field-based evaluation. These studies will advance the science of digital health and have wide application to future campaigns.
To assess smoking, vaping, and alcohol consumption behaviors via online surveys in the population. Further, the objective is to administer additional surveys to assess which methods (e.g., pen-and-paper records, a smartphone app) for monitoring smoking, vaping, alcohol intake, and food intake are preferred by the study population.
This study will test the hypothesis that the QuitVaping (QV) intervention and additional texting support will improve nicotine abstinence rates in adolescents as compared to Enhanced Usual Care (EUC: education about nicotine, vaping and addiction, advice to quit vaping, referral to TIQ texting support). Approximately 400 adolescents will be randomly assigned to one of two arms (1) QuitVaping intervention plus texting support to quit vaping and (2) EUC only.
The goal of this pilot study is to determine the feasibility of a randomized trial of the YES-CAN! (Youth Engaged Strategies to Change Adolescent Norms) program to prevent nicotine vaping among adolescents. The program integrates the following evidence-based strategies: youth-adult collaboration; youth-developed narrative videos to convey health messages; peer leaders as change agents; and sustained implementation to change the normative environment. Two middle/high school communities will receive the YES-CAN! intervention. In each school community, a trained teacher will deliver a credit-earning middle or high school class to 25-30 middle or high school students, who will produce 6-8 short videos intended to increase refusal skills; promote stress management and positive coping; change social norms; prevent vaping initiation; and promote vaping cessation among current users. Videos will use a narrative approach and integrate known determinants of vaping. Middle or high school students will collaborate with the teacher and researchers to develop discussion guides and skills-building activities based on best practices for substance use prevention. In 6-8 sessions, middle or high school students will deliver their videos to all students in the associated middle school. A text messaging or other media component will reinforce and boost the effectiveness of the classroom sessions. Aims for this pilot/feasibility study are: 1. To determine the feasibility and acceptability of the research protocols that will be used in a future efficacy trial
The investigators long-term goal is to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related health disparities among SGM populations. The objective of Project SMART (Social Media Anti-Vaping Messages to Reduce ENDS Use Among Sexual and Gender Minority Teens) is to evaluate the effectiveness of an sexual gender minority (SGM) -tailored social media intervention to prevent vaping initiation among SGM youth ages 13-20 years. The investigators central hypothesis is that SGM-tailored anti-vaping social media messages will be more effective than existing non-tailored messages to prevent vaping initiation among SGM youth. The scientific premise for this work is based on principles of cultural tailoring in health communication for vulnerable populations, the Health Equity Promotion Model, and the Message Impact Framework. The investigators are developing and evaluating a social media intervention because SGM youth have a high rate of social media use and are more likely to go online for health information than non-SGM youth. Social media, moreover, are increasingly used for health promotion to address health disparities and well-being of SGM populations. The investigators will conduct rapid-cycle feedback with stakeholders including SGM organization leaders to provide input on the message design, testing, and intervention implementation to ensure feasibility and acceptability of the intervention.

This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and compare the preliminary effect of vaping cessation program consisting of media literacy education and real-time text messaging support and leverage insights from behavioral economics to enhance social and financial incentives to improve program engagement, and eventually abstinence. Our hypotheses are that 1) the Combined arm is associated with improved vaping abstinence to the Media literacy and Financial incentive arms; and 2) the financial incentive-related arms (either Combined or Financial incentive) enhance engagement compared to the non-incentive related arms.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a mobile application (app) called "Goal2QuitVaping" to help adolescents quit vaping nicotine. Goal2QuitVaping was developed by our research team to assist with quitting vaping. Participants will be randomly assigned to either download the mobile app, "Goal2QuitVaping", or not. If provided with Goal2QuitVaping, participants will be asked to use the app regularly, at least once per day, throughout the study duration. Participants will be asked to complete electronic questionnaire measures throughout the study period. Participation in this study will take about 4 weeks.
This project will assess the ways in which e-cigarette product diversity impacts the user experience to inform potential regulations by identifying product characteristics that may: (1) put young adults at risk for tobacco product use; and (2) facilitate adult smokers switching to e-cigarettes. There are three primary objectives to the study: (1) Determine which dimensions of e-cigarette product diversity differentially affect product appeal in the overall population of tobacco product users as well as affect product appeal across young adult e-cigarette users and middle-age/older adult smokers; (2) Determine which dimensions of e-cigarette product diversity differentially affect product appeal in the overall population of tobacco product users as well as affect abuse liability in young adult e-cigarette users and the ability to resist smoking in adult smokers; (3) Determine the affect of product characteristics on e-cigarette nicotine delivery profile. For this substudy, young adult vapers (N=100) and adult smokers (N=100) will attend one laboratory session in which they will self-administer e-cigarette products varied according to within-subject e-cigarette factors (e.g., flavor, nicotine formulation).
The overall aim of the study is to evaluate the provision of e-cigarette (EC) versus NRT on smoking behavior, product use patterns and continued use, and iCO, a biomarker of toxicant exposure, among a sample of recent QL treatment failures. We will randomly assign N=372 smokers (targeted accrual) to EC (n=186) or QL treatment as usual with combination nicotine replacement therapy (NRT; n=186). All participants will receive three calls from QL coaches and EC and NRT will be provided at no cost for 8 weeks. The final follow-up will occur 12-weeks post baseline.
