The goal of this clinical trial is to explore possible benefits and mechanisms through which the Somatic Psychoeducational Intervention can improve health and wellness. The main goals of the study are: * To understand how the participants are doing with regard to their mindfulness, coping behaviors, emotional, physical, and work health, and autonomic reactivity (the degree participants physiologically respond). * To examine regulation of the oxytocinergic system * To investigate whether pre-intervention measures relate to the overall functioning * To determine the 1-week and 1-month post-intervention effects of the Intervention(s) * To identify individual characteristics that influence the effectiveness of the intervention at the 1-week and 1-month post-intervention assessments. Participants will: * complete the online pre-assessment measures regarding how they are doing emotionally and with respect to their work situation. * listen to 15-minutes of calming music and provide pre and post-music salivary samples * complete pre-intervention, post-intervention, 1-week post-intervention, and 1-month post-intervention assessments that involve completion of online measures and collection of saliva samples. * participate in the intervention (which involves 4 hours; the 1-hour classes will be administered over four weeks). Researchers will compare the Intervention Group A (in-person) to Intervention Group B (virtual) to see if the Intervention Group A experiences greater improvements in their health and wellness.

Nurses often experience elevated levels of stress, overwork, and trauma in the workplace, leading to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, burnout, and even nurse turnover. While effective therapies for PTSD exist, barriers to treatment arise from nursing culture, such as workplace stigma about mental health problems, fear that psychological status may impact performance evaluations, and demands of shiftwork. There is a pressing need for scalable evidence-based interventions tailored to nursing culture to effectively address PTSD and related mental health issues. The study aimed to assess the feasibility, safety, and acceptability of a tailored evidence-based treatment, Written Exposure Therapy (WET), for nurses experiencing work-related traumatic stress. This single-arm open pilot study with pre- and post-intervention assessments, included participants from two nursing schools' alumni. Eligibility criteria included nurses screening positive for work-related trauma with a report of at least two PTSD symptoms. Participants engaged in a self-administered, asynchronous, five-week online writing session, facilitated by WET-trained nurses. Outcomes measures (PTSD, depression, anxiety, burnout, and intention to quit) were assessed at baseline, post-intervention, and 5-weeks follow-up.
This research study is designed to better understand how a virtual reality (VR) exercise application may influence overall physical activity and well-being. VR games can make exercise more enjoyable and interactive, which has been shown to increase engagement in physical activity. Adult participants will do a progressive exercise program and report on overall physical activity, health, and psychological wellbeing. The intervention is expected to have a positive impact on these lifestyle factors.
Circadian rhythm disruption caused by shift work alters metabolic and hormonal pathways, which accelerates chronic disease onset, leading to decreased quality and quantity of life. Preclinical studies indicate that optimizing nutrient and sleep/rest timing can mitigate these effects. Female nightshift healthcare workers will be recruited to participate in a randomized crossover trial in which participants will be expected to follow the prescribed lifestyle intervention for eight weeks during the first or second eight-week periods of the study.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether personalized lifestyle coaching minimizes the negative impact of circadian disruption on performance and recovery in emergency medicine physician trainees during night shifts.
The goal of this randomized control trial is to learn if physical therapy coaching and education improves work-related muscle pain in surgeons more than education alone. The main focuses of this study are to: 1. To evaluate pain in surgeons before and after surgical cases. 2. To evaluate work-load related stress in surgeons after surgical cases. 3. To evaluate surgeons' quality of life. 4. To evaluate surgeons' grip strength. Participants will be put into two groups at random. One group will watch an educational video only. The other group will watch an educational video and get a coaching session from a physical therapist.
This study will test how well a mindfulness-based intervention called CHIME improves the emotional well-being of educators in Early Head Start and Head Start (EHS/HS) settings. The study also will examine if there are any benefits to young children's social emotional health as a result of the CHIME program. Researchers will compare educators who participate in CHIME to educators who are asked to participate at a later time to see if there are benefits to their emotional health and teaching practices.
This is a quasi-experimental study that will examine whether mindfulness based stress reduction, adapted to an online learning management system, will reduce factors related to burnout in private practice licensed clinical social workers in New York State.
Healthcare systems around the world have faced tremendous stress because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare workers (HCWs) (ie. physicians, nurses, and support staff), who serve as the foundation of the healthcare system, report high levels of psychological stress and burnout, which will likely worsen as the pandemic continues. The consequences of stress and burnout can reduce quality of life for providers and lead to adverse health behaviors (poor dietary choices, reduced physical activity, increased alcohol intake, increases in weight etc.) among HCWs. In addition, burnout can have dire consequences on healthcare delivery effectiveness including poor quality of care and significant cost implications due to medical errors and HCW absenteeism and turnover. In fact, annual estimates of burn-out related turnover range from $7,600 per physician to \>$16,000 per nurse. However, programs focused on reducing burnout in HCWs have the potential to reduce costs to the healthcare system by $5,000 per HCW per year. Maintaining and recovering psychological and behavioral well-being is essential to ensuring we have a workforce that is resilient to acute and ongoing stressors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that they are capable of providing the highest level of quality and compassionate care to patients. In this project, we will strengthen the resiliency of the Northwestern Medicine (NM) healthcare system by implementing an online psychological well-being intervention (PARK). We will assess HCW willingness to engage in PARK, which has been shown in other populations experiencing stress (e.g. dementia caregivers, general public coping with COVID-19) to be effective. We will also assess if the PARK is effective in reducing stress and associated-burnout, absenteeism, and intentions to leave the workforce in a subset of 750 persons who have been participating in a study of HCWs at NM since Spring 2020. In the entire cohort, we will measure the psychological well-being, levels of burnout, health behaviors, absenteeism, and plans to leave the workforce at three time periods: the start, middle, and end of the study period and assess whether they differ by HCW characteristics including gender, race, and role in health care. Results from this study will provide much-needed information: 1) about the current state of psychological well-being and burnout among NM HCWs, now over 1 ½ years into the pandemic; 2) on the role of an online wellness intervention to improve well-being during a protracted pandemic; and 3) about the contribution of PARK to reduce burnout, HCW absenteeism and turnover, and potential impacts on costs. PARK has the potential to have a significant impact on not only NM HCWs but also to be generalizable to other healthcare organizations for addressing burnout and to contribute to lessons learned on how to support HCWs responding to future pandemics; ensuring resiliency in the healthcare delivery system. In addition, we will work with our already engaged stakeholder committee to ensure results can provide actionable policy and fiscal insights. Future opportunities will include collaboration with other healthcare systems to expand roll-out of the successful PARK intervention.
This study will evaluate the effectiveness of FSST 2.0 (family supportive supervisor training plus support for use of family and sick leaves) using a randomized control trial design. We expect the intervention will increase supervisors' family supportive and leave supportive behaviors, which in turn will increase employees' leave use and decrease employees' work-family conflict, emotional exhaustion, depressive symptoms, and turnover intentions. This study will enroll a minimum 200 groups of managers and their employees. Managers in the intervention condition will complete pre- and 2 post-intervention Workplace Assessments, 2 online training modules, 1 webinar where managers can review intervention content and ask questions and share reactions on the materials. Managers in the control group and employees in both groups will complete pre- and 2 post-intervention Workplace Assessments. The post-intervention Workplace Assessment will be completed 3 and 6 months after the intervention. The total duration of the study is 9 months as the wait list control group will be offered the intervention and 2nd follow up survey after the 6-month trial.
The investigators propose to implement a comprehensive Pediatrician Wellbeing Program initiated through and aligning with departmental faculty development and mentorship processes and goals. The Investigators hypothesize that a wellbeing intervention that incorporates an innovative health coaching model to cultivate individual behavior change supportive of one's own and others' wellbeing will lead to improvements in self-reported wellbeing.
This research study is examining the feasibility and effectiveness of an online version of the Storytelling Through Music (STM) program with oncology nurses who have worked during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The role of peer support specialists (PSS) has burgeoned in the mental health field. Peer support specialists are individuals with a psychiatric condition who are in recovery and who are employed to provide various kinds of tangible and other supports to individuals with psychiatric conditions, generally in public mental health programs. Partially because of the newness of this role, PSS experience confusion about their role and tasks as well as conflict with other mental health providers who are uncertain about how to utilize PSS effectively in services. This project was designed to bring a coaching service to PSS to assist them to address challenges in their job. The investigators will conduct a randomized control trial to evaluate a novel coaching, Coaching and Advancement for Peer Providers (CAPP). Our hypotheses are that individuals participating in the CAPP intervention will experience a reduction in burnout, role confusion, and intention to leave their job or the field. Participants in CAPP will also experience an increase in job satisfaction, role clarity and organizational commitment.
Women are highly underrepresented in the construction skilled trades. In addition to facing the industry's well-known physical risks, women are subjected to discrimination, harassment, and skills under-utilization. As a result, tradeswomen have increased risk for injury, stress-related health effects, and high attrition rates from apprenticeship programs, thus perpetuating their minority status. Mentoring is a well-established technique for learning technical and personal navigation skills in new or challenging social environments. The investigators propose development and dissemination of a mentorship program through local unions of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), and evaluating its success in reducing women's injury and work stress, while improving retention.
Developed over 10 years ago, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) synergistically combines mindfulness training and cognitive behavioral therapy and can increase resiliency. In this study, the investigators proposed two aims: Aim #1: To adapt and optimize a MBCT resiliency program specifically for ICU nurses. For this aim, the investigators will engage multiple stakeholder groups to assist the protocol adaptation. Aim # 2: To conduct a pilot clinical trial to determine acceptability of the MBCT resiliency program and the control intervention. In this aim, the investigators will also identify the most feasible randomization level to minimize contamination between the control and intervention groups. Collectively, this proposal will pave the way for a properly designed large multi-center trial of a MBCT resiliency program (MBCT-ICU) to determine its ability to decrease BOS symptoms; and allow nurses to more effectively care for patients in the challenging ICU environment.
Homelessness is a complex social issue and requires a dedicated workforce of helping professionals, including nurses and social workers. Secondary traumatic stress is common in this workforce and contributes to poor professional quality of life, burnout, and job turnover. These factors undermine the health and well-being of homeless service providers and threaten the stability of this critical workforce. The purpose of this study is to evaluate "Storytelling Through Music," an innovative 6-week, multi-dimensional intervention, to improve well-being among homeless service providers.
The purpose of this research is to measure alterations in anxiety and brain activity associated with the use of an approved health device called Transauricular Vagal Nerve Stimulation (TaVNS) in distressed persons who work in a health care and distressed healthcare workers in the the Philadelphia, PA region. The Investigators will be using functional magnetic resonance imaging (or fMRI) to measure changes in each subject's brain function during the use of VNS. This study is designed to allow researchers to understand the changes in cerebral (brain) activity that occur when a subject uses VNS. Thus, the primary goal of the proposed study is to evaluate the ability of the TaVNS system to reduce distress and change neurophysiology among health care providers. The Investigators, hypothesize that using the TaVNS device will help reduce distress in individuals. In order to understand the mechanisms of change that occur while using the VNS study, the Investigators have added a substudy of participants who do not experience high levels of distress to evaluate the effects of the functional changes that may occur in the brain while using the TaVNS device. In addition to the primary aims of the overalll study to assess distress in workers while enrolled in a TaVNS program, a subgroup of 50 subjects will undergo functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while using the VNS device to assess the changes in the brain including neurophysiological effects of TaVNS. The goal of this substudy is to observe the changes in the brain while using the TaVNS earbuds in the MRI to increase our understanding of the mechanisms and processing involved while using TaVNS. In this substudy, which is amendment version 3.0, the investigators have increased the number of persons to include 50 subjects who will use the device in the MRI to evaluate the neural processes and cerebral blood flow while using TaVNS.
Certain populations may be particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of chronic stress, particularly chronic work-related stress. One such population is that of clergy doing ministry work. Clergy who are interested in stress reduction will choose one of three interventions: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, the Daily Examen, or a set of stress inoculation and breathing exercises called Stress Proofing. The study investigators will examine changes in heart rate variability and self-reported stress symptoms over time among clergy who have participated in one of the three interventions, compared to clergy who have not yet received one of the interventions. The aim of this study is to determine trends in stress outcomes for each of the three interventions. The investigators hypothesize that participation in each intervention will be associated with an improvement in stress outcomes compared to those who have not yet received an intervention.
The aim of the present study is to test the effects of a digital meditation intervention and/or a healthy eating intervention in a sample of UCSF employees with overweight and obesity (BMI\>=25kg/m2) who report mild to moderate stress. We will randomize UCSF employees to 8-weeks of a digital meditation intervention (using the commercially available application, Headspace), a healthy eating intervention, a digital meditation+healthy eating intervention, or a waitlist control condition.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect that uninstalling work email applications from mobile devices during leisure time has on health care worker stress levels.
Obesity is associated with many undesirable health effects and disease, and middle age is associated with increased risk for disease. Unfortunately, while others have looked at the effects of obesity, gender, and middle age, the combined effects of obesity and middle age on men's ability to do work in hot industrial environments have not been satisfactorily investigated. This small study evaluates the heat tolerance of lean and obese middle aged men both while exercising and resting and the ways in which each compensate for and dissipate increasing environmental heat and heat generated by the body while exercising. As obesity is a worldwide public health crisis and as populations in many industrialized nations age, it is important to understand the combined effects of obesity and middle age for men on their ability to safely work in hot environments. Such information will permit establishing and revising of safe work standards and inform public health outreach to the target population, itself.
